Detection Of A Landslide Glide Plane Using Seismic Reflection Methods: Investigation At Little Valley Landslide In Draper, Utah, Brady E. Tingey

Theses and Dissertations

An integration of geological and geophysical techniques has been used to characterize the internal structure of the Little Valley Landslide in Draper, Utah, USA. The Little Valley Landslide is a pre-historic landslide as old as 13ka B.P. It is found to consist of chaotic and disturbed weathered volcanic units derived from Tertiary age volcanics that comprise a great portion of the Wasatch Range. Geotechnical investigations that were integrated with the geophysical results included excavation of trenches and drilling of boreholes. Geophysical methods, in particular high-resolution seismic data, were used to provide a framework for interpreting the geotechnical observations. High-resolution seismic …

Methods And Materials For Making And Using Transgenic Dicamba-Degrading Organisms, Donald P. Weeks, Xiao-Zhuo Wang, Patricia L. Herman Sep 2006

Methods And Materials For Making And Using Transgenic Dicamba-Degrading Organisms, Donald P. Weeks, Xiao-Zhuo Wang, Patricia L. Herman

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

The invention provides isolated and at least partially-purified dicamba-degrading enzymes, isolated DNA molecules coding for dicamba-degrading enzymes, DNA constructs coding for dicamba-degrading enzymes, transgenic host cells comprising DNA coding for dicamba-degrading enzymes, and transgenic plants and plant parts comprising one or more cells comprising DNA coding for dicamba-degrading enzymes. Expression of the dicamba-degrading enzymes results in the production of dicamba-degrading organisms, including dicamba-tolerant plants. The invention further provides a method of controlling weeds in a field containing the transgenic dicamba-tolerant plants of the invention and a method of decontaminating a material containing dicamba comprising applying an effective amount of a …

Standardized Tests, Erroneous Scores, And Tort Liability, Vincent R. Johnson Sep 2006

Standardized Tests, Erroneous Scores, And Tort Liability, Vincent R. Johnson

ExpressO

Recently, there has been a vast expansion of standardized testing and of related scoring errors. For example, in October 2005, the College Board mis-scored 5,000 SAT exams. Most scores were too low by 50 to 100 points, but in some cases the deficiency was over 400 points. This is the first law review article to examine the issue of whether mis-scoring of standardized tests is actionable until traditional tort theories. The article assesses the viability of claims for fraud, negligent misrepresentation, defamation, false-light invasion of privacy, tortious interference, and injurious falsehood.

Biopolitics At The Bedside: Proxy Wars And Feeding Tubes, Joshua E. Perry Sep 2006

Biopolitics At The Bedside: Proxy Wars And Feeding Tubes, Joshua E. Perry

ExpressO

In the aftermath of Terri Schiavo’s dramatic final weeks of life, George Annas speculated that proponents of “culture of life” politics might “now view [themselves] as strong enough to generate new laws . . . to require that incompetent patients be kept alive with artificially delivered fluids and nutrition.” Indeed, Professor Annas’ prescience has been demonstrated by the post-Schiavo introduction in two dozen state legislatures of over fifty different bills making it more onerous to remove a patient’s artificial nutrition and hydration (ANH). With minor exception, however, most of the proposed legislation has either stalled or been watered down, prompting …

Information Privacy As A Function Of Facial Recognition Technology And Wearable Computers, Woodrow Barfield Sep 2006

Information Privacy As A Function Of Facial Recognition Technology And Wearable Computers, Woodrow Barfield

ExpressO

As technological advances are made in the design of smart sensors, the issue of privacy in public places, first discussed by Warren and Brandeis in 1890, becomes an important topic for law and policy. This paper examines issues of privacy that are impacted when an individual’s image is recorded by a video-based wearable computer, analyzed using facial recognition software, and uploaded to the internet. While the Constitutional basis of search and seizure law for individual’s placed under video surveillance is reviewed, a particular focus of the paper is on a less investigated but emerging area of concern, the video recording …

Jigsaw: Solving The Puzzle Of Enterprise 802.11 Analysis, Yu-Chung Cheng, John M. Bellardo, Péter Benkö, Alex C. Snoeren, Geoffrey M. Voelker, Stefan Savage Sep 2006

Jigsaw: Solving The Puzzle Of Enterprise 802.11 Analysis, Yu-Chung Cheng, John M. Bellardo, Péter Benkö, Alex C. Snoeren, Geoffrey M. Voelker, Stefan Savage

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The combination of unlicensed spectrum, cheap wireless interfaces and the inherent convenience of untethered computing have made 802.11 based networks ubiquitous in the enterprise. Modern universities, corporate campuses and government offices routinely de-ploy scores of access points to blanket their sites with wireless Internet access. However, while the fine-grained behavior of the 802.11 protocol itself has been well studied, our understanding of how large 802.11 networks behave in their full empirical complex-ity is surprisingly limited. In this paper, we present a system called Jigsaw that uses multiple monitors to provide a single unified view of all physical, link, network and …
