Panel Report: Investigative Journalism And National Security, Zachary D. Streit

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The panel discussion explores the tension between government secrecy and media transparency, focusing on the challenges investigative journalists face in reporting on national security issues. The participants argue that while some secrecy is necessary for national security, excessive classification hampers transparency and accountability. They discuss legal battles, over-classification, and the need for a balance between protecting sensitive information and the public's right to know.

The Blogging Of Everyday Life, Tama Leaver Oct 2006

The Blogging Of Everyday Life, Tama Leaver

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Writing in the early 1980s, Michel de Certeau, one of the most influential theorists of 'the everyday', warned:

Marginality is today no longer limited to minority groups, but is rather massive and pervasive; this cultural activity of the non-producers of culture, an activity that is unsigned, unreadable, and unsymbolized, remains the only one possible for all those who nevertheless buy and pay for the showy products through which a productivist economy articulates itself. Marginality is becoming a universal. A marginal group has now become a silent majority.[1]

Throughout The Practice of Everyday Life, de Certeau argues for …

Inside The Administrative State: A Critical Look At The Practice Of Presidential Control, Lisa Schultz Bressman, Michael P. Vandenbergh Oct 2006

Inside The Administrative State: A Critical Look At The Practice Of Presidential Control, Lisa Schultz Bressman, Michael P. Vandenbergh

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

From the inception of the administrative state, scholars have proposed various models of agency decision-making to render such decision-making accountable and effective, only to see those models falter when confronted by actual practice. Until now, the presidential control model has been largely impervious to this pattern. That model, which brings agency decision-making under the direction of the President, has strengthened over time, winning broad scholarly endorsement and bipartisan political support. But it, like prior models, relies on abstractions - for example, that the President represents public preferences and resists parochial pressures - that do not hold up as a factual …

Patients And Biobanks, Ellen Wright Clayton Oct 2006

Patients And Biobanks, Ellen Wright Clayton

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The question about the privacy of medical information can be stated simply: To what extent can and should patients control what the medical record contains and who has access to it and for what purposes? Patients often have apparently conflicting views on this subject. On the one hand, we, as patients, say that we prize privacy and that we fear that information will be used to harm us. On the other hand, we value the benefits that come from improved communication among providers, such as having our visits covered by third party payers and advances in medical science, which often …

Sydney’S Public Sculpture, Gabriel Strader-Brown Oct 2006

Sydney’S Public Sculpture, Gabriel Strader-Brown

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The purpose of this study is to observe the involvement that the city of Sydney has with the public arts attraction. Furthermore, the study will hopefully shed light on the importance of public art in Sydney and how it is an important aspect of cultural heritage. In addition to this, the analysis will cover the methods in which its venue is made accessible to the public through financial means and through aesthetic appeal. In order to uncover these objectives, the function and history of Sculpture by the Sea will be studied as well as the policies and or stance that …

Christian Libraries For The Next Generation: Expanding Access To Evangelical Literature, Gregory A. Smith Oct 2006

Christian Libraries For The Next Generation: Expanding Access To Evangelical Literature, Gregory A. Smith

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Recent changes in the world of information present unique challenges and opportunities for the dissemination of evangelical literature. This report suggests six ways that the Association of Christian Librarians can support evangelical education and scholarship in a context that is increasingly global, Web-based, and free from the confines of the traditional college campus. Implementing a combination of these strategies could make evangelical literature much more accessible via the Web, the dominant delivery platform of our day. However, choices among available strategies must take account of competition within the marketplace.

A Comparison Of Student Achievement In Economically Different But Academically Equivalent Catholic School Programs, Roseanne L. Williby Oct 2006

A Comparison Of Student Achievement In Economically Different But Academically Equivalent Catholic School Programs, Roseanne L. Williby

Student Work

Urban and suburban religious educational programs were evaluated to determine if achievement and readiness for high school transition were the same for students with similar parent commitment and equivalent Catholic school program experiences but differing socioeconomic advantages. Following five consecutive years in their programs, urban and suburban 4th-grade pretest compared to 8th-grade posttest gains made by students (n = 56) demonstrated positive academic outcomes for both programs. As reflected by subject test scores and composite percentile rank scores, urban and suburban programs equally prepared students for posttest performance on achievement tests and unconditional 9th-grade acceptance into college preparatory Catholic High …

The Development Of Social And Cultural Geographies In Taiwan: Knowledge Production And Social Relevance, Hsin-Ling Wu, Sue-Ching Jou, Lily Kong Oct 2006

The Development Of Social And Cultural Geographies In Taiwan: Knowledge Production And Social Relevance, Hsin-Ling Wu, Sue-Ching Jou, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Social and cultural geographies have long occupied a marginal position in Taiwan's scholarship in the humanities and social sciences. Despite the influence of the so-called ‘cultural turn’ that has characterized much of Anglo-American scholarship since the 1990s (Barnett 1998), Taiwan's scholarship in the social sciences in general and human geography more specifically has remained relatively untouched by these intellectual currents till very recent years. This paper seeks to examine the social, intellectual and institutional contexts that explain this marginalization, and consider the possibilities for social and cultural geographies' emergence from marginality in Taiwan in the future. This possibility is considered …

The City Of God And The Cities Of Men: A Response To Jason Carter, Randy Beck Oct 2006

The City Of God And The Cities Of Men: A Response To Jason Carter, Randy Beck

Scholarly Works

Law school seminars sometimes educate the professor as much as the students. That proved true for me in the spring of 2004, when seventeen law students and two colleagues from other departments joined me for a seminar focused on ancient and contemporary perspectives on law found within various Christian theological traditions. One seminar student who repeatedly spurred my own thinking was Jason Carter. Particularly thought provoking was the paper Jason presented in the final weeks of the seminar.

The returns from the 2004 election suggested that Jason had been unusually prescient in his analysis of U.S. religious and political trends. …

The Sound Of The Suburbs: A Case Study Of Three Garage Bands In San Jose, California During The 1960s, Paul Kauppila Oct 2006

The Sound Of The Suburbs: A Case Study Of Three Garage Bands In San Jose, California During The 1960s, Paul Kauppila

Faculty and Staff Publications

The Chocolate Watchband, the Count Five, and the Syndicate of Sound were three garage bands from San Jose, California. During the 1960s, before the high‐tech economy transformed the Santa Clara Valley into Silicon Valley, San Jose was a culturally sleepy suburb. This paper will examine these three groups in the context of 1960s culture and society and will compare and contrast their image and musical output with that of the better‐known “hippie” music scene originating an hour north in San Francisco.

Fecundity And Almodóvar? Sexual Ethics And The Specter Of Catholicism, Christopher Mcmahon Oct 2006

Fecundity And Almodóvar? Sexual Ethics And The Specter Of Catholicism, Christopher Mcmahon

Journal of Religion & Film

The famed Spanish film maker Pedro Almodóvar has spent much of his film career narrating stories which subvert the Francoist-Catholic ideology of mid-twentieth century Spain, particularly its account of sex and family. But in several of his recent films prior to Bad Education both homosexual and heterosexual characters struggle with questions of sexuality and birth. As these themes are subtly and dramatically presented they exert what one may identify as the 'spectral force' of Catholicism. As such, this essay suggests that these films may offer resources for Catholics to engage the critical questions concerning homosexuality in the life of the …

The Superhero's Mythic Journey: Death And The Heroic Cycle In Superman, Mark D. Stucky Oct 2006

The Superhero's Mythic Journey: Death And The Heroic Cycle In Superman, Mark D. Stucky

Journal of Religion & Film

Superman, the original superhero, is a culmination of the great mythic heroes of the past. The hero's journey, a recurring cycle of events in mythology, is described by Joseph Campbell. The three acts in Superman: The Movie portray a complex calling to the superhero's role, consisting of three distinct calls and journeys. Each of the three stages includes the death of someone close to him, different symbols of his own death and resurrection, and different experiences of atonement with a father figure. Analyzing these mythic cycles bestows the viewer with a heroic "elixir.”

They Call Me Joy: Philippine Protestantism As Local Culture, Brian Howell, Anthony Dela Fuente Oct 2006

They Call Me Joy: Philippine Protestantism As Local Culture, Brian Howell, Anthony Dela Fuente

Journal of Religion & Film

In this paper, we use the narrative of an award-winning Filipino film from 1998 as a window into contemporary Filipino spirituality and religious consciousness. Giving narrative details and literary content, with a particular focus on those aspects we feel are most salient for our discussion here, we argue that the commercially and critically successful film suggests important cultural themes. Specifically, this paper draws on the medium of film as a window into the contemporary ethos of Philippine spirituality and thought, and applies that insight to an analysis of ethnographic data on Philippine Baptist Christianity. Through conversion narratives as they were …
