Microfabrication And Evaluation Of Planar Thin-Film Microfluidic Devices, Bridget Ann Peeni Oct 2006

Microfabrication And Evaluation Of Planar Thin-Film Microfluidic Devices, Bridget Ann Peeni

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past 15 years, research in the field of microfluidics has rapidly gained popularity. By seeking to miniaturize and automate separation-based analysis, microfluidic research seeks to improve current methods through decreased cost, analysis time, and sources of contamination. My work has focused on developing a novel fabrication method, based on standard microfabrication techniques, to create thin-film microfluidic devices. This microfabrication format makes it possible to generate devices that provide high efficiencies, enable mass fabrication, and provide a platform capable of integrating the microfluidic and electronic components necessary for a micro-total analysis system (μ-TAS). Device fabrication combines the processes of …

Genetic Characterization And Diversity Of Rathayibacter Toxicus, Irina V. Agarkova, A. K. Vidaver, E. N. Postnikova, I. T. Riley, N. W. Schaad

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Rathayibacter toxicus is a nematode-vectored gram-positive bacterium responsible for a gumming disease of grasses and production of a highly potent animal and human toxin that is often fatal to livestock and has a history of occurring in unexpected circumstances. DNA of 22 strains of R. toxicus from Australia were characterized using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). AFLP analysis grouped the 22 strains into three genetic clusters that correspond to their geographic origin. The mean similarity between the three clusters was 85 to 86%. PFGE analysis generated three different banding patterns that enabled typing the strains …

Uncivil Religion: "Judeo-Christianity" And The Ten Commandments, Frederick Mark Gedicks, Roger Hendrix Oct 2006

Uncivil Religion: "Judeo-Christianity" And The Ten Commandments, Frederick Mark Gedicks, Roger Hendrix

ExpressO

In the recent Decalogue Cases, Justice Scalia argued that when it comes to “public acknowledgment of religious belief, it is entirely clear from our Nation's historical practices that the Establishment Clause permits th[e] disregard of polytheists and believers in unconcerned deities, just as it permits the disregard of devout atheists.” Justice Scalia's argument represents the latest attempt to insulate American civil religion from Establishment Clause attack. A “civil religion” is a set of nondenominational values, symbols, rituals, and assumptions which create both reverence of national history and formation of a communal national bond. The most recent incarnation of American civil …

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: A Stimulating New Method For Treating Depression, But Saddled With The Same Old Problems, Mark S. George

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

When Dr Tony Barker designed and built the first modern TMS device in 1985 in Sheffield, England, he probably could not have predicted then how things would evolve with his ‘ fancy gadget’ (Barker et al., 1985). For the first time he had built a machine powerful enough to non-invasively induce currents within the brain and spinal cord. Because TMS can create focal transient lesions, as well as measure brain excitability and regional connectivity, neuroscientists all around the world are now busily using it to understand the brain. TMS research is shown at every major neuroscience meeting now, with articles …
