Origin And Mechanism Of Terpene Biosynthesis In Pseudopterogorgia Spp, Jennifer M. Boehnlein
Origin And Mechanism Of Terpene Biosynthesis In Pseudopterogorgia Spp, Jennifer M. Boehnlein
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The goal of this work was to investigate the biosynthetic origins of diterpene natural products (pseudopterosins, kallolides, bipinnatins, and cembrenes) from corals of the genus Pseudopterogorgia as well as the biosynthetic pathways by which they are produced. These studies have shown that the pseudopterosins from Pseudopterogorgia elisabethae are biosynthesized within the algal symbiont (or possibly a bacterium or fungus associated with the symbiont), are not inducible by manipulation of light levels, and do not change as a result of transplantation to new locations. Studies on Pseudopterogorgia bipinnata revealed that only one chemotype is capable of biosynthesizing the kallolide family of …
Photodegradation Of 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole Disulfide And Related Benzothiazoles, Zuzana Zajickova
Photodegradation Of 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole Disulfide And Related Benzothiazoles, Zuzana Zajickova
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Benzothiazoles are heterocyclic compounds used predominantly as rubber vulcanization accelerators. The overall goal of our research was to investigate the photodegradation behavior of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole disulfide, its degradation product 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, and further degradation product benzothiazole. Modern analytical techniques were utilized to follow photodegradation process at arbitrary intervals. A chromatographic method using reverse phase liquid chromatography was developed for the separation of benzothiazoles in the irradiated mixture. Direct photolysis of benzothiazole and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole in methanol at 253.7 and 313 nm in the presence or absence of oxygen was investigated at first. Benzothiazole was found to undergo photodimerization into 2,2'-bibenzothiazole, and in the …
Polymorphism And Selection At Exon 2 Of The Class Ii Beta Chain Of The Major Histocompatibility Complex In Forpus Passerinus, Jaclyn M. Walbroehl
Polymorphism And Selection At Exon 2 Of The Class Ii Beta Chain Of The Major Histocompatibility Complex In Forpus Passerinus, Jaclyn M. Walbroehl
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Female mate choice has been proposed to be a major force acting to maintain the polymorphism of the MHC, the most genetically variable genes known. I genotyped seventy-two individuals from a free-living population of the parrot, Forpus passerinus, in order to determine whether disassortative mating is the mode of selection acting at this locus. Both the high rate of nonsynonymous amino acid changes at the peptide binding regions of exon 2 of the class II beta gene and the unprecedented number of alleles found in this population provided strong evidence for the operation of selection. Despite this, a chi-square test …
Photosynthetic Pigment Ratios In Relation To Photic Flux, Cidya S. Grant
Photosynthetic Pigment Ratios In Relation To Photic Flux, Cidya S. Grant
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The molar and weight ratios of the photosynthetic pigments of ten algal species were analyzed in an attempt to determine if knowledge of the light field could be used to give better ratios for estimating the chlorophyll a contributed from each algal division to total chlorophyll a or biomass. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is one of the tools used in pigment-based chemotaxonomy for estimating the biomass of algal communities by determining the concentrations of the various chlorophylls and carotenoids. Stable ratios of chlorophyll a: marker pigment are used as multiplying factors for calculating the amount of chlorophyll a contributed …
Qos Driven Communication Backbone For Noc Based Embedded Systems, Ankur Agarwal
Qos Driven Communication Backbone For Noc Based Embedded Systems, Ankur Agarwal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
With the increasing complexity of the system design, it has become very critical to enhance system design productivity to meet with the time-to-market demands. Real Time embedded system designers are facing extreme challenges in underlying architectural design selection. It involves the selection of a programmable, concurrent, heterogeneous multiprocessor architecture platform. Such a multiprocessor system on chip (MPSoC) platform has set new innovative trends for the real-time systems and system on Chip (SoC) designers. The consequences of this trend imply the shift in concern from computation and sequential algorithms to modeling concurrency, synchronization and communication in every aspect of hardware and …
Range Assignment Problem And Security In Wireless Networks, Mohammad O. Pervaiz
Range Assignment Problem And Security In Wireless Networks, Mohammad O. Pervaiz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This thesis considers two important issues in wireless networks. In first part, we address Energy-Efficient Range Assignment in Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks (HRA) and in second part, we present a survey on security attacks in ad hoc wireless networks. We address the HRA problem by selecting the transmission range for each energy-constraint sensor node such that a multi-hop communication path exists between each sensor' node and a resource-rich supernode while maximum power required is minimized. This is the first work to address this problem. We propose several solutions: an Integer Programming approach, a distributed greedy protocol, and a minimum spanning …
Popping Patented Pills: Europe And A Decade's Dose Of Trips, David Vaver, Shamnad Basheer
Popping Patented Pills: Europe And A Decade's Dose Of Trips, David Vaver, Shamnad Basheer
All Papers
This paper considers some features of Europe's approach to medicine, public health and patents as it has developed during the decade since TRIPs came into force. It then reviews what rights users have in relation to such patents and what duties right holders may owe users. The following issues are discussed: 1. How patents on medicines are viewed in Europe, 2. How TRIPs has affected European law, 3. How bilateral agreements since TRIPs have affected Europe, 4. How user rights should be viewed under TRIPs, 5. Whether patents in the public health field are a special case.

What does the public want of publishers? As book buyers, they want ready access to cheap and varied books in their language of choice. They don't want to be told a book is out of stock or in some language they can't read, and that they have to trudge round to some public library or antiquarian bookstore, or do their own surreptitious translation. As writers and users, they want fair access to the world's literature to have and to hold, to enjoy, to make fun of if they want, to build on it, and also to benefit and let others …

This Article analyzes the shift of legal scholarship from the old world of law reviews to today's world of peer reviews to tomorrow's world of open access legal blogs. This shift is occurring in three dimensions. First, legal scholarship is moving from the long form (treatises and law review articles) to the short form (very short articles, blog posts, and online collaborations). Second, a regime of exclusive rights is giving way to a regime of open access. Third, intermediaries (law school editorial boards, peer-reviewed journals) are being supplemented by disintermediated forms (papers on the Internet, blogs). Blogs and internet conversations …
Stories Of Community: The First Ten Years Of Nike Women's Advertising, Jean M. Grow
Stories Of Community: The First Ten Years Of Nike Women's Advertising, Jean M. Grow
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
This semiotic analysis of early Nike women's advertising explores the evolution of the women's brand from its launch in 1990 through 2000, and includes twenty-seven print campaigns. The semiotic analysis is enhanced by in-depth interviews of the creative team. The study is framed by a single research question. What symbolically ties these ten years of advertising into a cohesive whole and how? Ultimately, three distinct mediated communities emerge. The story behind these communities, expressed semiotically and orally, suggests that the power of this advertising lies in its mediated construction of community life. The resonance of these ads is rooted in …
The Sulzer Hip Replacement Recall Crisis: A Patient's Perspective, Keri Stephens, Scott C. D'Urso, Penny Holmes
The Sulzer Hip Replacement Recall Crisis: A Patient's Perspective, Keri Stephens, Scott C. D'Urso, Penny Holmes
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
This case discusses a product recall that resulted from a manufacturing defect and the degree to which the company distributed accurate and timely information to affected patients. More specifically, the case examines the crisis communication of Sulzer Orthopedics and its efforts to negotiate the interests of various stakeholders, while limiting liability. Written from the perspective of a patient, the case raises interesting questions regarding organizational duties related to product liability. It also provides valuable insights into how organizational communication may have both short- and long-term effects on its relationship with patients and physicians, among others.
Reconsidering Public Relations’ Infatuation With Dialogue: Why Engagement And Reconciliation Can Be More Ethical Than Symmetry And Reciprocity, Kevin L. Stoker, Kati Tusinski Berg
Reconsidering Public Relations’ Infatuation With Dialogue: Why Engagement And Reconciliation Can Be More Ethical Than Symmetry And Reciprocity, Kevin L. Stoker, Kati Tusinski Berg
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
Advocates of dialogic communication have promoted two-way symmetrical communication as the most effective and ethical model for public relations. This article uses John Durham Peters’s critique of dialogic communication to reconsider this infatuation with dialogue. In this article, we argue that dialogue’s potential for selectivity and tyranny poses moral problems for public relations. Dialogue’s emphasis on reciprocal communication also saddles public relations with ethically questionable quid pro quo relationships. We contend that dissemination can be more just than dialogue because it demands more integrity of the source and recognizes the freedom and individuality of the source. The type of communication, …
Chief Justice Rehnquist's Enduring Democratic Constitution, Richard W. Garnett
Chief Justice Rehnquist's Enduring Democratic Constitution, Richard W. Garnett
Journal Articles
William H. Rehnquist's essay, The Notion of a Living Constitution, was delivered as the Will E. Orgain Lecture and then published thirty years ago, back when Rehnquist was still a relatively junior Associate Justice. The piece provides a clear and coherent statement of Rehnquist's judicial philosophy, and the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy and the Texas Law Review deserve thanks for their initiative and generosity in reproducing it, in memory of his life and work.
This introduction to Rehnquist's essay highlights his view that the Notion of a Living Constitution was to be resisted, not out of pious …
The Rehnquist Court And The Groundwork For Greater First Amendment Scrutiny Of Intellectual Property, Mark P. Mckenna
The Rehnquist Court And The Groundwork For Greater First Amendment Scrutiny Of Intellectual Property, Mark P. Mckenna
Journal Articles
This contribution to the Washington University School of Law conference on the Rehnquist Court and the First Amendment addresses the Rehnquist Court's view of the role of the First Amendment in intellectual property cases. It argues that, while the Rehnquist Court was not eager to find a conflict between intellectual property laws and the First Amendment, there is reason to believe that it set the stage for greater First Amendment scrutiny of intellectual property protections. At the very least, the Court left that road open to future courts, which might be inclined to view intellectual property more skeptically.

Professional Football Sponsorship In The English Premier League And The German Bundesliga, André Wolfgang Bühler
Professional Football Sponsorship In The English Premier League And The German Bundesliga, André Wolfgang Bühler
Plymouth Business School Theses
This research project looks at professional football sponsorship from three different perspectives: the clubs' perspective (sponsorship as an income stream for professional football clubs), the sponsors' perspective (sponsorship as a marketing tool for companies), and a joint perspective (sponsorship as an inter-organisational relationship between professional football clubs and their sponsors). The English Premier League and the German Bundesliga serve as the subject of research owing to their extraordinarily sound reputation in commercial terms. A combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods was used in order to answer the research questions which derived from an extensive literature review. First, qualitative in-depth …
