E-Learning In The Corporate Sector: A Case Study In The Oil And Gas Industry, Frank Bate Jan 2006

E-Learning In The Corporate Sector: A Case Study In The Oil And Gas Industry, Frank Bate

Theses

This research examined the implementation of an e-learning tool at Apache Energy, an oil and gas company operating in Western Australia. The e-learning tool was developed to help facilitate an understanding of site safety at an oil and gas facility characterised by an increasingly contracted workforce. The study’s research questions were formulated to describe and explain the implementation, looking particularly at relationships between the design of the e-learning tool, the way in which it was implemented, and the outcomes that emerged. The study adopted an interpretive-case study approach focusing on 256 contractors who engaged with the e-learning tool at a …

Sacred Swing: The Sacralization Of Jazz In The American Bahá'Í Community, E. Taylor Atkins Jan 2006

Sacred Swing: The Sacralization Of Jazz In The American Bahá'Í Community, E. Taylor Atkins

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Much modern jazz performance is imbued with religious significance or “sacred intentionality”, as revealed in the Bahá’í conceptions of jazz as a vehicle for worship and spiritual transcendence. Although earlier generations of believers objected to jazz because of its presumed moral and aesthetic poverty, jazz has become a staple in Bahá’í public culture and proclamation activities, partially due to the influence of prominent jazz musicians who became Bahá’ís, such as Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Flora Purim, and Tierney Sutton. Oral history and textual research are used to explore the dialectic between jazz and Bahá’í spiritual teachings and practices, the impact …

Network And Data Security, Chintan Dalwadi

All ETDs from UAB

With a growing number of users getting connected to the Internet and given their growing reliance on computers, it has become increasingly important to protect the confidential information stored locally or on the Internet. There are people who greatly under estimate the threats posed in the world of information technology and believe that their identities and information are safe, and of those people who are actually concerned about security, most are unaware of the areas where they can be targeted. It is not surprising that there are very few areas in information technology that have not been compromised. It is …

Bike Messengers And The Really Real: Effervescence, Reflexivity, And Postmodern Identity, Jeffrey L. Kidder Jan 2006

Bike Messengers And The Really Real: Effervescence, Reflexivity, And Postmodern Identity, Jeffrey L. Kidder

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Out of more than two thousand bike messengers in New York City, a few hundred participate in alleycats—illegal races held in open traffic. Surrounding this racing scene is a vibrant messenger community. Messengers who race in or attend alleycats carry their messenger identity into all aspects of their lives. Through direct participant observation, this article proposes that alleycats function as Durkheimian rituals for these messengers. Alleycats express the central values of the social world. Lost in collective effervescence, the individual confronts these values as objectified truths, which allow messengers to form stable identities. Further, bicycles, messenger bags, and other objects …

Reconceptualising The Professional Development Of In-Service Science Teachers In Pakistan, Nelofer Halai Jan 2006

Reconceptualising The Professional Development Of In-Service Science Teachers In Pakistan, Nelofer Halai

Book Chapters / Conference Papers

Pakistan is a society in transition in more ways than one: politically it is still trying to find its place in the democratic nations of the world; economically it is taking steps to move closer to a market-based economy; and socially it is nurturing a more liberal and just society by reining in the religious extremists. In the aftermath of 9/11 stress has been on educational reform in a number of areas including – updating curriculum, improving access to schooling and developing teacher education. Teacher as the agent of reform is slowly gaining currency in Pakistan. The Institute for Educational …

Action Principle Formulation For Motion Of Extended Bodies In General Relativity, Jeeva Anandan, Naresh Dadhich, Parampreet Singh Jan 2006

Action Principle Formulation For Motion Of Extended Bodies In General Relativity, Jeeva Anandan, Naresh Dadhich, Parampreet Singh

Faculty Publications

We present an action principle formulation for the study of motion of an extended body in General Relativity in the limit of weak gravitational field. This gives the classical equations of motion for multipole moments of arbitrary order coupling to the gravitational field. In particular, a new force due to the octupole moment is obtained. The action also yields the gravitationally induced phase shifts in quantum interference experiments due to the coupling of all multipole moments.

Squeezed-State Source Using Radiation-Pressure-Induced Rigidity, Thomas Corbitt, Yanbei Chen, Farid Khalili, David Ottaway, Sergey Vyatchanin, Stan Whitcomb, Nergis Mavalvala Jan 2006

Squeezed-State Source Using Radiation-Pressure-Induced Rigidity, Thomas Corbitt, Yanbei Chen, Farid Khalili, David Ottaway, Sergey Vyatchanin, Stan Whitcomb, Nergis Mavalvala

Faculty Publications

We propose an experiment to extract ponderomotive squeezing from an interferometer with high circulating power and low mass mirrors. In this interferometer, optical resonances of the arm cavities are detuned from the laser frequency, creating a mechanical rigidity that dramatically suppresses displacement noises. After taking into account imperfection of optical elements, laser noise, and other technical noise consistent with existing laser and optical technologies and typical laboratory environments, we expect the output light from the interferometer to have measurable squeezing of 5 dB, with a frequency-independent squeeze angle for frequencies below 1 kHz. This squeeze source is well suited for …

Faculty Publications

A previously undescribed anaerobic, heterofermentative, non-spore-forming, Gram-positive rod was isolated from the hindgut of the Formosan subterranean termite Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki. The DNA G + C content of this bacterium was 37.8 mol%. Sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene revealed that this organism is related to, but distinct from, several genera of lactic acid bacteria, principally several species of the genus Enterococcus. Phenotypic traits that serve to separate this organism from related genera include high levels of the cellular fatty acid C18:1ω9c and the production of ethanol along with lactic acid as fermentation products. Based on the collected phylogenetic …

Introduction: Self-Organization In Nonequilibrium Chemical Systems, Irving R. Epstein, John A. Pojman, Oliver Steinbock Jan 2006

Introduction: Self-Organization In Nonequilibrium Chemical Systems, Irving R. Epstein, John A. Pojman, Oliver Steinbock

Faculty Publications

The field of self-organization in nonequilibrium chemical systems comprises the study of dynamical phenomena in chemically reacting systems far from equilibrium. Systematic exploration of this area began with investigations of the temporal behavior of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky oscillating reaction, discovered accidentally in the former Soviet Union in the 1950s. The field soon advanced into chemical waves in excitable media and propagating fronts. With the systematic design of oscillating reactions in the 1980s and the discovery of Turing patterns in the 1990s, the scope of these studies expanded dramatically. The articles in this Focus Issue provide an overview of the development and …

Open Systems Viewed Through Their Conservative Extensions, Alexander Figotin, Stephen P. Shipman Jan 2006

Open Systems Viewed Through Their Conservative Extensions, Alexander Figotin, Stephen P. Shipman

Faculty Publications

A typical linear open system is often defined as a component of a larger conservative one. For instance, a dielectric medium, defined by its frequency dependent electric permittivity and magnetic permeability is a part of a conservative system which includes the matter with all its atomic complexity. A finite slab of a lattice array of coupled oscillators modelling a solid is another example. Assuming that such an open system is all one wants to observe, we ask how big a part of the original conservative system (possibly very complex) is relevant to the observations, or, in other words, how big …

Frontier Impressions: The Role Of Daub At The Beaver Creek Trail Crossing Site, Brennan J. Dolan Jan 2006

Frontier Impressions: The Role Of Daub At The Beaver Creek Trail Crossing Site, Brennan J. Dolan

Nebraska Anthropologist

In the summer of 2005 the University of Nebraska-Lincoln archaeological field school excavated at the Beaver Creek Trail Crossing Site (25SW49). Early on the excavations at this historic site began to reveal a high amount of material salvaging by site occupants. This paper takes a systematic look at daub as an investigative substance. This piece discusses what archaeologists can learn by examining daub similarly to the analyses of more traditional archaeological materials (e.g. lithics). Additionally, this manuscript addresses frontier building practices with specific consideration to salvaging activity.

Design And Evaluation Of New Power Management Methods To Reduce Direct And Induced Energy Use Of The Internet, Priyanga Chamara Gunaratne Jan 2006

Design And Evaluation Of New Power Management Methods To Reduce Direct And Induced Energy Use Of The Internet, Priyanga Chamara Gunaratne

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The amount of electricity consumed by devices connected to the Internet in the U.S. has rapidly increased and now amounts to over 2% of total electricity used, which is about 74 TWh/yr costing over $6 billion annually. This energy use can be categorized as direct and induced. Much of this energy powers idle links, switches, and network-connected hosts and is thus wasted. This dissertation contains the first-ever investigation into the energy efficiency of Ethernet networks. A method for matching Ethernet link data rate with link utilization, called Adaptive Link Rate (ALR), is designed and evaluated. ALR consists of a mechanism to …
