Status Of The Common Snook (Centropomus Undecimalis) In Texas, Kevin L. Pope, David R. Blankinship, Mark Fisher, Reynaldo Patiño Nov 2006

Status Of The Common Snook (Centropomus Undecimalis) In Texas, Kevin L. Pope, David R. Blankinship, Mark Fisher, Reynaldo Patiño

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Catch data are summarized for common snook (Centropomus undecimalis) from 1975 through 2004 from the lower Laguna Madre, the only area along the Texas coast where common snook are routinely captured. Catch rates of common snook were low < 1 common snook per gill net set) and varied among years, as did size structure. Based on the catch rate and size structure data, the adult common snook population is characterized by low abundance and erratic recruitment (i.e., missing or extremely weak year-classes are common). Additional comments on the status of common snook in Texas are provided.

Partial-Wave Expansions Of Angular Spectra Of Plane Waves, James A. Lock Nov 2006

Partial-Wave Expansions Of Angular Spectra Of Plane Waves, James A. Lock

Physics Faculty Publications

Focused electromagnetic beams are frequently modeled by either an angular spectrum of plane waves or a partial-wave sum of spherical multipole waves. The connection between these two beam models is explored here. The partial-wave expansion of an angular spectrum containing evanescent components is found to possess only odd partial waves. On the other hand, the partial-wave expansion of an alternate angular spectrum constructed so as to be free of evanescent components contains all partial waves but describes a propagating beam with a small amount of standing-wave component mixed in. A procedure is described for minimizing the standing-wave component so as …

Richard Posner Meets Reb Chaim Of Brisk: A Comparative Study In The Founding Of Intellectual Legal Movements, Samuel J. Levine Nov 2006

Richard Posner Meets Reb Chaim Of Brisk: A Comparative Study In The Founding Of Intellectual Legal Movements, Samuel J. Levine

San Diego International Law Journal

This Essay aims to examine some of the common elements of law and economics and the Brisker method that have contributed to their success as intellectual movements. Toward that end, the Essay compares the founding principles of these movements, exploring similarities in their essential characteristics. Part I presents and analyzes representative examples of the conceptual approach underlying each of these methods. Drawing on these and other examples of each method, Part II observes that the success of the methods stems in part from their common reliance on historical antecedents as well as their emphasis on conceptual frameworks broadly applicable within …

Beholding The Beauty Of Self: The Psychological Integration Of The Afrocentric-Self Among African-American Females Socialized In A Eurocentric Aesthetic, Donna Lynn Cook Phd Nov 2006

Beholding The Beauty Of Self: The Psychological Integration Of The Afrocentric-Self Among African-American Females Socialized In A Eurocentric Aesthetic, Donna Lynn Cook Phd

Dissertations

Self-esteem and body image disturbances prominently figure into many physical and psychological health disorders such as depression, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, and chemical dependency. In Euro-American culture, media images of femininity and physical attractiveness reinforce generally held perceptions of the idealized female beauty as tall, white, slender, and often blond and blue eyed. The physical morphology of African-American women does not genetically "fit" this westernized standard of beauty with implications for their mental health. The socialization of African-American women in a culture that embraces a different ethnic standard of beauty influences their perceptions of how physically attractive they see themselves. …

The Procompetitive Interest In Intellectual Property Law, Thomas F. Cotter Nov 2006

The Procompetitive Interest In Intellectual Property Law, Thomas F. Cotter

William & Mary Law Review

When government recognizes intellectual property (IP) rights, it is often viewed as sanctioning the existence of private "monopolies," in contrast to the general antimonopoly thrust of the antitrust laws. And yet, on occasion IP law itself condemns conduct on the part of IP owners-or excuses otherwise infringing activity on the part of IP defendants-expressly for the purpose of promoting competition. It does so even though antitrust law -if one were to apply it at all under analogous circumstances-would not find anticompetitive harm without conducting a more thorough analysis of whether the antitrust defendant possesses power over a well-defined market. Salient …

Using Coupled Eulerian And Lagrangian Grids To Model Explosive Interactions With Buildings, Braden Lusk, William P. Schonberg, Jason Baird, Robert S. Woodley, Warren Noll

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents the development of a computational model that can be used to study the interactions between structures and detonating explosives contained within them. This model was developed as part of an effort to develop a rubble characterization model for use in AmmoSIM, an agent based urban tactical decision aid (UTDA) software for weapon-target pairing. The rubble pile created following the collapse of a building in a combat situation can significantly impact mission accomplishment, particularly in the area of movement and maneuver. The information provided by AmmoSIM will enable both platoon level and command center staff to make informed …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

The roundscale spearfish, Tetrapturus georgii Lowe, 1840, is known only from four specimens from the Mediterranean and eastern North Atlantic. Additional specimens have not been identified since 1961, making the validity and distribution of this species unclear. Analysis of 16 billfish specimens from the western North Atlantic on the basis of scale morphology, anus position, and mitochondrial DNA confirms the validity of this species and extends its distribution. Mid-lateral scales are soft, notably rounded anteriorly, and bear 2–3 points distinct from those of the sympatric longbill spearfish (Tetrapturus pfluegeri Robins and de Sylva, 1963) and white marlin (Tetrapturus …

Alloy, Software Engineering, And Undergraduate Education, Michael J. Lutz Nov 2006

Alloy, Software Engineering, And Undergraduate Education, Michael J. Lutz

Presentations and other scholarship

RIT's undergraduate software engineering program has a strong emphasis on design, including formal mathematical modeling. However students (and professional software engineers) are skeptical about the use of mathematical models in their day-to-day work. Alloy has proven to be successful in addressing some of this skepticism, but further work is needed to make formal modeling a normin software development.

Physics Faculty Publications

Resonant interaction between longitudinal-optic (LO) phonons and electrons bound on shallow donors in GaN is studied using magnetoluminescence of neutral-donor bound excitons (D0X). The experiments were performed on high-quality freestanding GaN material and heteroepitaxial GaN layers grown on sapphire. In addition to the principal recombination channel of D0X, in which donors are left in their ground states, two-electron satellites (TES) involving different excited donor excitations, as well as replicas of the principal D0X transition due to LO phonons, were observed for the oxygen and silicon donors. In order to separate transitions involving ground and …

One-Way Essential Complements, Keith M. Chen, Barry Nalebuff Nov 2006

One-Way Essential Complements, Keith M. Chen, Barry Nalebuff

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

While competition between firms producing substitutes is well understood, less is known about rivalry between complementors. We study the interaction between firms in markets with one-way essential complements. One good is essential to the use of the other but not vice versa, as arises with an operating system and applications. Our interest is in the division of surplus between the two goods and the related incentive for firms to create complements to an essential good. Formally, we study a two-good model where consumers value A alone, but can only enjoy B if they also purchase A. When one firm sells …

Double-Slit Interference And Temporal Topos, Goro Kato, Tsunefumi Tanaka Nov 2006

Double-Slit Interference And Temporal Topos, Goro Kato, Tsunefumi Tanaka

Mathematics

The electron double-slit interference is re-examined from the point of view of temporal topos. Temporal topos (or t-topos) is an abstract algebraic (categorical) method using the theory of sheaves. A brief introduction to t-topos is given. When the structural foundation for describing particles is based on t-topos, the particle-wave duality of electron is a natural consequence. A presheaf associated with the electron represents both particle-like and wave-like properties depending upon whether an object in the site (t-site) is specified (particle-like) or not (wave-like). It is shown that the localization of the electron at one of the slits is equivalent to …

A Review Of Accelerated Test Models, Luis A. Escobar, William Q. Meeker Nov 2006

A Review Of Accelerated Test Models, Luis A. Escobar, William Q. Meeker

Faculty Publications

Engineers in the manufacturing industries have used accelerated test (AT) experiments for many decades. The purpose of AT experiments is to acquire reliability information quickly. Test units of a material, component, subsystem or entire systems are subjected to higher-than-usual levels of one or more accelerating variables such as temperature or stress. Then the AT results are used to predict life of the units at use conditions. The extrapolation is typically justified (correctly or incorrectly) on the basis of physically motivated models or a combination of empirical model fitting with a sufficient amount of previous experience in testing similar units. The …

Large Deviations For The Two-Dimensional Navier-Stokes Equations With Multiplicative Noise, S. S. Sritharan, P. Sundar Nov 2006

Large Deviations For The Two-Dimensional Navier-Stokes Equations With Multiplicative Noise, S. S. Sritharan, P. Sundar

Faculty Publications

A Wentzell-Freidlin type large deviation principle is established for the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations perturbed by a multiplicative noise in both bounded and unbounded domains. The large deviation principle is equivalent to the Laplace principle in our function space setting. Hence, the weak convergence approach is employed to obtain the Laplace principle for solutions of stochastic Navier-Stokes equations. The existence and uniqueness of a strong solution to (a) stochastic Navier-Stokes equations with a small multiplicative noise, and (b) Navier-Stokes equations with an additional Lipschitz continuous drift term are proved for unbounded domains which may be of independent interest. © 2006 Elsevier …
