Modeling Of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Confined Concrete Cylinders, Indrani V. Volety Jan 2006

Modeling Of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Confined Concrete Cylinders, Indrani V. Volety

LSU Master's Theses

Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) confined concrete columns have been developed for new construction and rebuilding of concrete piers/piles in engineering structures. Design of these FRP confined concrete columns requires an accurate estimate of the performance enhancement due to the confinement mechanism. Therefore, the key is to develop a confinement model, a model that relates the confined concrete strength with the unconfined concrete strength and the confining pressure provided by the FRP. Due to its closed-form expression and ease of application, design-oriented confinement models predominate in designing FRP confined concrete columns. Design oriented models are directly based on the interpretation of …

Laboratory And Field Measurements Of Bioturbation By Macrofauna In A Coastal Setting, Skyler Neylon Jan 2006

Laboratory And Field Measurements Of Bioturbation By Macrofauna In A Coastal Setting, Skyler Neylon

LSU Master's Theses

Two ophiuroid species, Hemipholis elongata and Ophiophragmus spp. were studied in laboratory microcosms to elucidate patterns of sediment mixing for key bioturbators in the Mississippi Sound, Mississippi. The effects of bioturbation on artificially stratified sediments in microcosms were traced via time-series digital x-radiography. Preliminary results indicate that for three population densities of the brittle stars (comparable to field densities), a steady state volumetric bioturbation rate of 1-2 cm3/d is reached within two months of introduction to a fresh system. The preservation quotient, q, a fractional measure of preserved primary fabric, reached a minimum of 0.5 during the 16-week experiment. Maximum …

Automatic Active Contour Modelling And Its Potential Application For Non-Destructive Testing, Srinath Vepathur Sitaraman Jan 2006

Automatic Active Contour Modelling And Its Potential Application For Non-Destructive Testing, Srinath Vepathur Sitaraman

LSU Master's Theses

Active contouring techniques are very useful in medical imaging, digital mapping, non-destructive ultrasonic evaluation, etc. Therefore, we try to explore and investigate the advanced automatic active contouring methods, which can benefit the aforementioned applications. In this thesis work, we study the automatic active contour models adopted for the object characterization, whose extensions could include the potential defect analysis in the ultrasonic non-destructive testing. The active contouring scheme (also called a snake) or an energy minimizing spline, is an algorithm which is very sensitive to the manually marked initial points, and thereby requires an expertly operation. Therefore, we make new research …

Hydrate Dissociation During Drilling Through In-Situ Hydrate Formations, Erdem Catak Jan 2006

Hydrate Dissociation During Drilling Through In-Situ Hydrate Formations, Erdem Catak

LSU Master's Theses

Natural gas hydrates are thought to be the future hydrocarbon source of the energy hungry world. Tremendous amount of research has been done to investigate the feasibility of gas production from the hydrate formations. In this direction, three basic production methods, thermal stimulation, depressurization and thermodynamic inhibitor injection have been proposed to produce hydrocarbons off the hydrates. On the other hand, they present high potential risk of drilling hazards, such as severe gasification of drilling fluid, casing collapse due to increase in pressure after dissociation of hydrate zone, and instability of ocean floor, which may cause a platform failure. Scientists …

Mesoscale Simulation Of Grain Boundary Diffusion Creep In The Presence Of Grain Growth, Lucian Zigoneanu Jan 2006

Mesoscale Simulation Of Grain Boundary Diffusion Creep In The Presence Of Grain Growth, Lucian Zigoneanu

LSU Master's Theses

Grain-boundary (GB) diffusion creep (Coble creep) is the dominant deformation mechanism for the fine-grained materials under low stress and at elevated temperature. During creep deformation the grains become elongated in the tensile direction because of atoms diffusion along GBs from places in compression to those in tension. Consequently, the GB diffusion rate depends on the normal stress gradient along the boundaries. It is widely accepted that the GB migration generally plays two important roles during Coble creep: one leading to the decrease of the creep rate due to the increase of the grain size by GB migration mediated grain growth …

Quality Characterization Of Cholesterol-Free Mayonnaise-Type Spreads Containing Rice Bran Oil, Karen Melissa Garcia Jan 2006

Quality Characterization Of Cholesterol-Free Mayonnaise-Type Spreads Containing Rice Bran Oil, Karen Melissa Garcia

LSU Master's Theses

Traditional mayonnaise is manufactured with soybean oil (SBO) and egg-yolk containing ingredients. About 1/4 of American consumers have some forms of cardiovascular disease, accounting for >40% of all deaths in USA. Rice bran oil (RBO), a healthy lipid source, has cholesterol-lowering effects, and could be used to replace SBO in mayonnaise preparation. To take advantage of the health benefits associated with RBO, food products containing RBO need to be developed and characterized. Cholesterol-free mayonnaise-type spreads containing RBO were developed using a constrained mixture design. Two studies were performed to determine sensory attributes driving acceptance and purchase intent and to optimize …

Using Elimination To Describe Maxwell Curves, Lucas P. Beverlin Jan 2006

Using Elimination To Describe Maxwell Curves, Lucas P. Beverlin

LSU Master's Theses

Cartesian ovals are curves in the plane that have been studied for hundreds of years. A Cartesian oval is the set of points whose distances from two fixed points called foci satisfy the property that a linear combination of these distances is a fixed constant. These ovals are a special case of what we call Maxwell curves. A Maxwell curve is the set of points with the property that a specific weighted sum of the distances to n foci is constant. We shall describe these curves geometrically. We will then examine Maxwell curves with two foci and a special case …

Characterization Of The Dependency Across Foreign Exchange Markets Using Copulas, Ryan Coelho Jan 2006

Characterization Of The Dependency Across Foreign Exchange Markets Using Copulas, Ryan Coelho

LSU Master's Theses

Though Pearson's correlation coefficient provides a convenient approach to measuring the dependency between two variables, in the last few years, there has been a significant amount of literature cautioning against the use of Pearson's correlation coefficient, as it does not remain invariant under monotone transformations of the underlying distribution functions. Since we are interested in examining the dependency pattern observed by the return on the Sterling Pound with that of the Japanese Yen, we will use the notion of a copula to approximate the joint density function between the daily returns on the Sterling Pound and the Japanese Yen. In …

Grinding Wheel Condition Monitoring With Boosted Classifiers, Fengming Tang Jan 2006

Grinding Wheel Condition Monitoring With Boosted Classifiers, Fengming Tang

LSU Master's Theses

In this thesis, two data sets collected in grinding process under different cutting and wheel conditions were studied. One is the cutting forces in three directions, i.e. X, Y and Z, collected under two different cutting conditions. The other one is the acoustic emission (AE) signals collected under different wheel conditions(sharp and dull). For the goal of grinding wheel condition monitoring, the regression model with autocorrelated errors was proved to be effective and was used to extract features from signals in this study. The coefficients of the models served as the features used in the classification step that employed boosting …

The Feasibility Of Using Gps Technology For Continuous Time Studies Of Rubber-Tired Grapple Skidders, Robert Henry Dupre Jan 2006

The Feasibility Of Using Gps Technology For Continuous Time Studies Of Rubber-Tired Grapple Skidders, Robert Henry Dupre

LSU Master's Theses

Skidders are one of the most common timber harvesting machines used on mechanized logging operations in the southern United States and can represent the greatest single capital investment for a logging contractor. Time studies of skidders have been conducted on nearly every type of mechanized logging operation and are a key part of the productivity studies conducted on logging operation. GPS technologies have enabled researchers to move away from the typical manual time data collection for productivity studies and start conducting unattended time studies on skidding equipment. For this study a Trimble GeoXT with external antenna was installed in a …

Genetic Stratigraphy And Geochronology Of Last Interglacial Shorelines On The Central Coast Of South Carolina, Russell Willis Jan 2006

Genetic Stratigraphy And Geochronology Of Last Interglacial Shorelines On The Central Coast Of South Carolina, Russell Willis

LSU Master's Theses

This study investigated the shallow subsurface of the Lower Coastal Plain of South Carolina in order to determine the sea-level history and stratigraphic architecture preserved within several emergent shoreline complexes. The absolute age of each shoreline complex was estimated using single-aliquot regenerative-dose (SAR) optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques. The resulting geochronology was incorporated into a high-resolution stratigraphic framework defined by ground penetrating radar calibrated with deep sediment cores, many of which contain a complete sequence of highstand deposition. Three emergent barrier complexes were identified within the Lower Talbot, Pamlico, and Princess Anne terraces, and assigned to sea-level highstands during interglacial …

Multiple Phases Of Tertiary Extension And Synextensional Deposition Of The Miocene–Pliocene Salt Lake Formation In An Evolving Supradetachment Basin, Malad Range, Southeast Idaho, U.S.A., S. P. Long, P. K. Link, Susanne U. Janecke, D. W. Rodgers, M. E. Perkins, C. M. Fanning

Geosciences Faculty Publications

The extensional history of the Malad and Bannock ranges in southeast Idaho and northern Utah involves multiple phases of Tertiary normal faulting and synextensional deposition. Detailed geologic mapping, structural and stratigraphic analyses, and geochronologic data from this study elucidate previously defined deformational events in the region, and define two new extensional episodes.

The largest-magnitude extension took place along low-angle normal faults of the ∼10–4-Ma Bannock detachment system, with concurrent sedimentation of the Miocene–Pliocene Salt Lake Formation in a regionally continuous supradetachment basin. This basin developed by ∼10.2 Ma, and was preceded by two phases of smaller-magnitude, aerially restricted normal faulting …

Noise Externalities: A Hybrid Model To Assess Effects And Management With Application To Transportation Issues In Rhode Island, Suk-Jae Kwon

Open Access Dissertations

This study estimates the potential external costs from heavy-duty truck traffic noise in the context of a proposed container port development. The study also explores economic valuation methods including theoretical concepts and a comparison of hedonic model specifications for estimating losses. The results of a hedonic property model for TF Green Airport, show that noise has a statistically significant and quantitatively important negative effect on property values. The key results for the best model show that damages (in year 2000 dollars) are -$5000 * (ln dB) allowing for the influence of other factors. Because ln(dB) is a strictly concave function, …

Strategies For Encouraging The Abandonment Of Female Genital Cutting In West Africa: Experiences From Senegal, Burkina Faso, And Mali, Nafissatou J. Diop, Ian Askew Jan 2006

Strategies For Encouraging The Abandonment Of Female Genital Cutting In West Africa: Experiences From Senegal, Burkina Faso, And Mali, Nafissatou J. Diop, Ian Askew

Reproductive Health

This article explores efforts to encourage abandonment of female genital cutting (FGC) in Senegal, Burkina Faso, and Mali. The strategy of encouraging traditional practitioners to stop performing FGC is not effective as community-level support for the practice remains high. Training health staff significantly improved healthcare providers' levels of knowledge about FGC and its complications. Consequently, it was recommended that such training be incorporated into preservice medical training. The use of community-based strategies like the Village Education Program (VEP) showed the most promise, as their multifaceted approach addresses knowledge, attitudes, actions, and communal support in an integrated manner. The way forward …

The Effectiveness Of Hands-On Activities Compared To Paper And Pencil Activities When Teaching Reading To First Through Fifth Grade Students, Nigel Daniels

OTS Master's Level Projects & Papers

To answer this problem the following hypothesis was established: There will be a difference in students' achievement levels in elementary reading when determining which is more effective teaching style, using hands-on activities to teach reading or using paper and pencil work to teach reading. The hands-on activity will be the more effective method and the students will prove this by increases in their progress levels.

Re-Envisioning Theological Education And Formation For Mission, In-Context, Using Distance Education, David Wollenburg Jan 2006

Re-Envisioning Theological Education And Formation For Mission, In-Context, Using Distance Education, David Wollenburg

Doctor of Ministry

Distance Education Leading To Ordination (DELTO) is a program of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) designed to prepare individuals for pastoral ministry. It is non-residential, and it is contextual, as those in the program are already engaged in ministry.

Three concerns about DELTO are addressed in this work: the first is that it is a "dumbing-down" of pastoral formation; the second is that it is not possible to form a spiritual commWlity of support on-line; and the third is the need for the seminary faculty to have enough information to be able to confidently certify DELTO graduates for ordination.

This …

Characterization Of Perphenazine And Scopolamine Aerosols Generated Using The Capillary Aerosol Generator, Xihao Li

Theses and Dissertations

The characterization of perphenazine and scopolamine aerosols generated using the capillary aerosol generator (CAG) was reported. Variables including steady state power, the formulation vehicle, the drug concentration and the formulation flow rate were studied for their effects on the chemical stability and particle size of these drug aerosols.Stability-indicating HPLC and LC-MS assays were developed and validated for perphenazine and scopolamine, respectively. The chemical stability of each compound was investigated under a variety of stress conditions and the structure of degradation products was proposed.Perphenazine aerosols were generated from propylene glycol (PG) formulations with concentrations of 9, 48 and 90mM at formulation …

Random Effects And Spatial Autocorrelations With Equal Weights, Badi H. Baltagi Jan 2006

Random Effects And Spatial Autocorrelations With Equal Weights, Badi H. Baltagi

Center for Policy Research

This note considers a panel data regression model with spatial autoregressive disturbances and random effects where the weight matrix is normalized and has equal elements. This is motivated by Kelejian et al. (2005), who argue that such a weighting matrix, having blocks of equal elements, might be considered when units are equally distant within certain neighborhoods but unrelated between neighborhoods. We derive a simple weighted least squares transformation that obtains GLS on this model as a simple OLS. For the special case of a spatial panel model with no random effects, we obtain two sufficient conditions where GLS on this …

Estimating Heterogeneous Capacity And Capacity Utilization In A Multi-Species Fishery, Ronald G. Felthoven, William C. Horrace, Kurt E. Schnier Jan 2006

Estimating Heterogeneous Capacity And Capacity Utilization In A Multi-Species Fishery, Ronald G. Felthoven, William C. Horrace, Kurt E. Schnier

Center for Policy Research

We use a stochastic production frontier model to investigate the presence of heterogeneous production and its impact on fleet capacity and capacity utilization in a multi-species fishery. Furthermore, we propose a new fleet capacity estimate that incorporates complete information on the stochastic differences between each vessel-specific technical efficiency distribution. Results indicate that ignoring heterogeneity in production technologies within a multi-species fishery, as well as the complete distribution of a vessel's technical efficiency score, may yield erroneous fleet-wide production profiles and estimates of capacity. Furthermore, our new estimate of capacity enables out-of-sample production predictions predicated on either homogeneity or heterogeneity modeling …

What Effects Does Peer Group Study Have On Students’ Learning In Commerce Mathematics? A Case Study Of Diverse Ethnic Learning, Crystal Chun Yun Lau Jan 2006

What Effects Does Peer Group Study Have On Students’ Learning In Commerce Mathematics? A Case Study Of Diverse Ethnic Learning, Crystal Chun Yun Lau

EDU-COM International Conference

Nowadays collaborative learning (CL) has been widely known as the most effective form of learning. Yet, despite all the studies and anecdotal experiences reported by teachers and researchers, the paradigm remains largely unused in university contexts. CL is a philosophy that encompasses all elements of group work and learning situations where students cooperate in order to accomplish a specific learning objective. It is a philosophy that fits in today's globalized world and provides an opportunity for students to become better citizens of the world. CL provides the mechanism for students to interact positively with people who think differently, not only …

Kenneth Burke, The Basic Communication Course, And Applied Scholarship, Scott Titsworth, Ben Bates, Pam Kenniston

Basic Communication Course Annual

The Journal of Applied Communication Research published a forum of position papers in 2000 (Volume 28, Issue 2) that sought to define “applied communication research.” Collectively, the authors called for scholarship that embodies a reflexive relationship between theory and practice (O’Hair, 2000; Keyton, 2000, Cissna, 2000; Eadie, 2000; Frey, 2000; Seibold, 2000; Wood, 2000). In this essay, we call for applied scholarship that focuses on how we talk, perform, and theorize the basic communication course. Drawing from the works of Kenneth Burke (e.g., 1931/1968; 1935; 1937/1984; 1941/ 1967; 1945/1969; 1954/1984), we focus specifically on the salience of discourses of and …
