An Approach To Resolve Data Model Heterogeneities In Multiple Data Sources, Chaiyaporn Chirathamjaree Jan 2006

An Approach To Resolve Data Model Heterogeneities In Multiple Data Sources, Chaiyaporn Chirathamjaree

Research outputs pre 2011

To gain a competitive advantage, it is imperative for executives to be able to obtain one unique view of information, normally scattered across disparate data sources, in an accurate and timely manner. To interoperate data sources which differ structurally and semantically, particular problems occur, for example, problems of changing schema in data sources affect the integrated schema. This paper presents an approach to resolve data model heterogeneities in databases and legacy systems through mediation and wrapping techniques. The system is well supported by the mediated data model (MDM), a semantically-rich data model which can describe and represent heterogeneous data schematically …

Student Works (2000-2009)

Fractal can be described as a self-similarity, irregular shape and scale independent object. The generation of each fractal is dependent on the algorithm used. The fractal is generated using a form of computer-generated process to create complex, repetitive, mathematically based geometric shapes. There are two main aims of this research, one of which is to develop a prototype known as Fractal Generation System (FGS) whereby each type of fractal is generated by practical implementations of the theories with some adaptation in the following algorithms: IFS Iteration, Formula Iteration and Generator Iteration. FGS also caters for the calculation of the fractal …

Malaysia Tourism Network Games / Christopher Yip Wai Hon, Wai Hon Christopher Yip

Student Works (2000-2009)

Web-based Public Information Systems of the kind common in tourism do not satisfy the needs of the customer because they do not offer a sufficiently flexible linking environment capable of emulating the mediation role of a tourist adviser. Much literature has argued that interactive engagement in a computer medium is best demonstrated by games. With this in mind, this paper suggests certain techniques that virtual environments (especially cultural heritage ones) can learn from game design. Thus, Malaysia Tourism Network games are introduced. Interesting animation show will be display when the player passes a stage. This can attract the player to …

This Ph.D. dissertation is centered on approximating the interfacial adhesion energies of a thermal barrier coating (TBC) within a density functional theory (DFT) framework. The strategy is to develop and validate a computational protocol to study systems which enhance the interfacial adhesion of the thermally grown oxide (TGO) to the Ni (100) substrate. The open source DFT code known as DACAPO, supported through the Technical University of Denmark, was used in this study. The investigation begins with reproducing the model system (SiO2/Ni Complex) energetic values in the DACAPO DFT platform. These results are compared to earlier work which was carried …

School Administrators' Perceptions Of The Cacrep School Counseling Standards, Sandra M. Frey-Mckeown Jan 2006

School Administrators' Perceptions Of The Cacrep School Counseling Standards, Sandra M. Frey-Mckeown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

School administrators have broad influence on the selection and role of school counselors. However, administrators' training programs give them little, if any, understanding of the standards (CACREP) to which school counselors are trained and, perhaps more importantly, no information about the school counselors' role as defined by the counseling profession (Ballard and Murgatroyd, 1999; Borders and Drury, 1992; Fitch et al., 2001; Louis et al., 2001; Ponec and Brock, 2000) The purpose of this study was to describe how school administrators view the importance and use of the CACREP School Counseling Standards when hiring school counselors. Questionnaires were mailed to …

A Machine-Aided Approach To Intelligent Index Generation, Shelly Candita Lukon Jan 2006

A Machine-Aided Approach To Intelligent Index Generation, Shelly Candita Lukon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Back-of-the-book indexing is the process of generating a list of relevant terms, sub-terms and cross-references from a corpus and providing the user with corresponding page references.

Several cognitive tasks are necessary to produce a good index, and are performed primarily by the human indexer. Indexing has become somewhat automated through computer applications, which at best generate a concordance, and exist to reduce the mundane portions of the process. However, none of these tools determines which terms to index, nor do they capture context-sensitive information about terms and their relationships. Human indexers perform these time-consuming tasks.

The challenge is to develop …

A Study Of The Relationships Between Superintendent Longevity, Board Member Longevity, Board Member Training, And School Districts Demonstrating Adequate Yearly Progress (Ayp) During The 2004-2005 School Year, Edward Maritz Jr. Jan 2006

A Study Of The Relationships Between Superintendent Longevity, Board Member Longevity, Board Member Training, And School Districts Demonstrating Adequate Yearly Progress (Ayp) During The 2004-2005 School Year, Edward Maritz Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Expectations for school districts and educators are high; and expectations for those governing schools are even higher yet. NCLB poses a substantial challenge to those governing school districts: all students must be 100% proficient in language arts and mathematics by 2014. In the face of the demands of the standards movement and the increased accountability placed upon those governing schools, school board members need to know if the research base has identified any characteristics to their service on school boards that can be found to have a correlation to improving the effectiveness of their school districts. This study employed correlation …

Those temperature and species concentrations revealed detailed thermal and chemical structures of the CVD reactor.

The concentrations of argon plus hydrogen, methane, and C2Hx (C2H2 + C2H4 + C2H6) resulting from xylene decomposition were measured along the CVD at different temperatures. Ferrocene was added to xylene to investigate the effect of a catalyst on composition profiles. The …

Selective Growth Of Carbon Nanotubes And Oxide Nanowires: Applications In Shadow Lithography And Fabrication Of Aligned Carbon Nanotube Membranes, Nitin Chopra Jan 2006

Selective Growth Of Carbon Nanotubes And Oxide Nanowires: Applications In Shadow Lithography And Fabrication Of Aligned Carbon Nanotube Membranes, Nitin Chopra

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

A promising approach investigated here is to utilize thin film multilayer structures where the thickness of a catalyst layer at an exposed edge of photolithographically defined pattern determines the diameter of the nanotubes/nanowires grown from it. This can in turn be incorporated into photolithographically defined post structures resulting in an array of suspended nanowires for line-of-site shadow lithography. Success of the diameter control approach has been shown by selectively growing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) from narrow lines (12-60 nm) of SiO2, Fe, Ni, Co on micron-scale patterned substrates in a ferrocene or nonferrocene catalyzed CVD process. In addition, the …

Bosonization Vs. Supersymmetry, Herbert Morales Jan 2006

Bosonization Vs. Supersymmetry, Herbert Morales

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

We study the conjectured equivalence between the O(3) Gross-Neveu model and the supersymmetric sine-Gordon model under a naive application of the bosonization rules. We start with a review of the equivalence between sine-Gordon model and the massive Thirring model. We study the models by perturbation theory and then determine the equivalence. We find that the dependence of the identifications on the couplings can change according to the definition of the vector current. With the operator identifications of the special case corresponding to a free fermionic theory, known as the bosonization rules, we describe the equivalence between the massless Thirring model …

Khatri-Rao Products And Conditions For The Uniqueness Of Parafac Solutions For Ixjxk Arrays, Heather Michele Clyburn Bush Jan 2006

Khatri-Rao Products And Conditions For The Uniqueness Of Parafac Solutions For Ixjxk Arrays, Heather Michele Clyburn Bush

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

One of the differentiating features of PARAFAC decompositions is that, under certain conditions, unique solutions are possible. The search for uniqueness conditions for the PARAFAC Decomposition has a limited past, spanning only three decades. The complex structure of the problem and the need for tensor algebras or other similarly abstract characterizations provided a roadblock to the development of uniqueness conditions. Theoretically, the PARAFAC decomposition surpasses its bilinear counterparts in that it is possible to obtain solutions that do not suffer from the rotational problem. However, not all PARAFAC solutions will be constrained sufficiently so that the resulting decomposition is unique. …

A Systematic Study On The Thermodynamic And Transport Properties Of Layered Ruthenates, Xiunu Lin Jan 2006

A Systematic Study On The Thermodynamic And Transport Properties Of Layered Ruthenates, Xiunu Lin

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

In the 4d transition metal oxides, the extension of the 4d orbitals leads to comparable and thus competitive kinetic and coulomb energies. As a result, small perturbations can induce significant changes in their physical properties, giving rise to a class of exotic phenomena that are rarely found in other materials. The ruthenates materials with readily tunable parameters open an avenue to study the strong electronic correlation in the rarely explored territory: the 4d transition metal oxides.

The bilayered system, Ca3Ru2O7, belongs to the Ruddlesden-Popper series in which the physical properties are intimately linked to …

An Examination Of The Bio-Philosophical Literature On The Definition And Criteria Of Death: When Is Dead Dead And Why Some Donation After Cardiac Death Donors Are Not, Leslie Whetstine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Human fascination with transplantation has been portrayed in mythology and legend as well as in art and literature throughout history. It has both horrified and captivated our collective conscience and has progressed, in a relatively short time period, from science fiction to a modern accomplishment that can improve longevity and enhance quality of life.

The primary obstacle for transplantation is no longer scientific in nature but is predominantly one of supply and demand and carries with it attendant ethical concerns. Specific to this work is the question of whether a particular method of organ procurement known as Donation After Cardiac …

There's No Place Like Home? The Effects Of Childhood Themes On Women's Aspirations Toward Leadership Roles, Janet Wojtalik Jan 2006

There's No Place Like Home? The Effects Of Childhood Themes On Women's Aspirations Toward Leadership Roles, Janet Wojtalik

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The shortage of women in leadership positions remains a far-reaching concern in all management arenas. Although the literature hints at the influence of the internal barriers of lack of self-confidence, poor self-esteem and the overwhelming attitude of instinctive male dominance, the literature fails to address the impact of early childhood themes on the development of these misconceptions. The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of childhood themes on women's aspirations toward leadership as suggested by the Eccles Model of Achievement Related Choices. Early childhood gender related experiences of women in leadership and non-leadership roles were solicited using …

Authentic Dasein As Pathway To Heideggerianism As A Political Philosophy - A Political Vibration Of Being And Time, Thomas Akpen Jan 2006

Authentic Dasein As Pathway To Heideggerianism As A Political Philosophy - A Political Vibration Of Being And Time, Thomas Akpen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the history of Western philosophy, Martin Heidegger is the only philosopher after Plato and Aristotle to have seriously investigated the question of being. Instead of dwelling on particulars as previous philosophers did, Heidegger probes the question of being by investigating the being of the investigator of being. This being is Dasein, understood as human existence. Dasein is not just a thinking thing (res cogitans) or a political animal (politicus animalus), but essentially a being-in-the-world. Dasein has two modes of existence in its being-in-the-world -- inauthentic existence and authentic existence.

To exist inauthentically is to reject the clarion call of …

Ottoman Empire's Role In The Emergence Of The "European" World System, Sakin Erin Jan 2006

Ottoman Empire's Role In The Emergence Of The "European" World System, Sakin Erin

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In this study I will be focusing on classical world system theory. I will discuss the revisions that are done to the system and how these revisions opened up possibilities to include the Ottoman Empire in the world system. The categories that were created by Immanuel Wallerstein to depict the world system, such as core, semi-periphery, periphery countries, and hegemonic states, suggest that a major actor in the system is left out. I will present historical facts showing how the Ottoman Empire and the Europeans were in a constant interaction. This interaction took place in different forms that were important …

Conditional Error Variance In The Wisc-Iv, Laszlo Attila Erdodi Jan 2006

Conditional Error Variance In The Wisc-Iv, Laszlo Attila Erdodi

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Measurement error at different ability levels in the WISC-IV was studied to empirically test the conditional error variance hypothesis. Graduate students in clinical psychology at a Midwestern university scored fictitious WISC-IV Vocabulary subtests constructed to yield actual scaled scores of 4, 10, and 16. Classical measurement theory assumes error rate will be constant across the three conditions. Modern test theories (Item Response Theory), however, predict that the precision of a measurement instrument will change as a function of the examinee's ability level. Data supported the conditional error variance hypothesis. Scorers made significantly more errors in the low- and high-abilitylevel conditions …

Student Achievement As A Function Of Class Size And Pupil-Teacher Ratio, Robert T. Becker Jan 2006

Student Achievement As A Function Of Class Size And Pupil-Teacher Ratio, Robert T. Becker

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Background: The degree to which class size is able to produce positive, enduring effects on student achievement has been and continues to be vigorously debated. Comparative studies have clouded the issue with imprecise use of the terms class size (CS) and pupil-teacher ratio (PTR), making it difficult to draw clear conclusions regarding the effects of class size on student achievement.

Purpose: To assess differences, if any, in achievement between students attending classes where the class-size is approximately n = 17 and students attending classes where the class-size is approximately n = 25 and the pupil-teacher ratio is approximately …

Surface Analysis Of A Black Coating From Little Lost River, Reshmi Perumplavil Jan 2006

Surface Analysis Of A Black Coating From Little Lost River, Reshmi Perumplavil

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

A black coating of unknown origin obscures the pictographs in Little Lost River Cave, Idaho. We utilized x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to characterize the outermost surface of the black coating to understand how it was formed. Carbon and oxygen predominated in the XP spectra, whereas nitrogen was detected at varying levels in different samples. High-resolution carbon 1s XP spectra showed that carbon was present in at least three different forms: hydrocarbon C, carbonyl C, and carbonate C/ amide C. The N 1s peak was observed at ~399-400 eV binding energy, which is usually attributed to aromatic or amide N. The …

An Analysis Of Spending Patterns In Dissimilar Revenue School Districts In The State Of Michigan, M. Scott Korpak Jan 2006

An Analysis Of Spending Patterns In Dissimilar Revenue School Districts In The State Of Michigan, M. Scott Korpak

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to compare two districts with somewhat similar demographics but with dissimilar revenues to see whether or not additional funding per child resulted in enhanced learning opportunities for students in the higher funded district. In addition, although not a primary function of this study, student achievement was considered as a possible outcome for students who had enhanced learning opportunities.

Because public school funding is determined by policy makers, three public policy questions were the basis for comparing the two districts. The three questions were as follows: (a) Should a child’s zip code determine the …
