Mule Deer, Western Association Of Fish And Wildlife Agencies Mule Deer Working Grop Jan 2006

Mule Deer, Western Association Of Fish And Wildlife Agencies Mule Deer Working Grop

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Since 1922, the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (WAFWA) has served as a leader promoting management and protection of fish and wildlife in the western United States and Canada. An organization represented by 17 states and four Canadian provinces, WAFWA has faced the difficult challenge of sifting through the ever-changing societal, economic, political and scientific issues that define natural resource management in a West that has undergone many changes.

WAFWA is particularly concerned about mule deer, a species that lives in every North American habitat except for the tropics, arctic and extreme deserts. Mule deer numbers and distribution …

A Generic Autonomous Clustering-Based Heterogeneous Waveband Switching Architecture In Wdm Networks, Mengke Li, Byrav Ramamurthy Jan 2006

A Generic Autonomous Clustering-Based Heterogeneous Waveband Switching Architecture In Wdm Networks, Mengke Li, Byrav Ramamurthy

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Heterogeneous waveband switching (HeteroWBS) in WDM networks reduces the network operational costs. We propose an autonomous clustering-based HeteroWBS architecture to support the design of efficient HeteroWBS algorithms under dynamic traffic requests in such a network.

Active Learning To Maximize Area Under The Roc Curve, Matt Culver, Deng Kun, Stephen Scott Jan 2006

Active Learning To Maximize Area Under The Roc Curve, Matt Culver, Deng Kun, Stephen Scott

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

In active learning, a machine learning algorithmis given an unlabeled set of examples U, and is allowed to request labels for a relatively small subset of U to use for training. The goal is then to judiciously choose which examples in U to have labeled in order to optimize some performance criterion, e.g. classification accuracy. We study how active learning affects AUC. We examine two existing algorithms from the literature and present our own active learning algorithms designed to maximize the AUC of the hypothesis. One of our algorithms was consistently the top performer, and Closest Sampling from the literature …

Scaling A Dataflow Testing Methodology To The Multiparadigmworld Of Commercial Spreadsheets, Marc Fisher Ii, Gregg Rothermel, Tyler Creelan, Margaret Burnett Jan 2006

Scaling A Dataflow Testing Methodology To The Multiparadigmworld Of Commercial Spreadsheets, Marc Fisher Ii, Gregg Rothermel, Tyler Creelan, Margaret Burnett

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Spreadsheets are widely used but often contain faults. Thus, in prior work we presented a data-flow testing methodology for use with spreadsheets, which studies have shown can be used cost-effectively by end-user programmers. To date, however, the methodology has been investigated across a limited set of spreadsheet language features. Commercial spreadsheet environments are multiparadigm languages, utilizing features not accommodated by our prior approaches. In addition, most spreadsheets contain large numbers of replicated formulas that severely limit the efficiency of data-flow testing approaches. We show how to handle these two issues with a new data-flow adequacy criterion and automated detection of …

An Ontology-Based Metamodel For Software Patterns, Scott Henninger, Padmapriya Ashokkumar Jan 2006

An Ontology-Based Metamodel For Software Patterns, Scott Henninger, Padmapriya Ashokkumar

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Patterns have been successfully used in software design to reuse proven solutions. But the complex interconnections and the number of pattern collections is becoming a barrier for identifying relevant patterns and pattern combinations for a given design context. More formal representations of patterns are needed that allow machine processing and the creation of systematic pattern languages that guide composition of patterns into coherent design solutions. In this paper, we present a technique based on Description Logic and Semantic Web technologies to address these problems. A metamodel is presented for developing pattern languages using this technology. Usability patterns are used to …

Water Quality: Implementing The Clean Water Act, Claudia Copeland Jan 2006

Water Quality: Implementing The Clean Water Act, Claudia Copeland

Congressional Research Service Reports

Congress enacted the last major amendments to the Clean Water Act in 1987 (P.L. 100-4). Since then, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), states, and others have been working to implement the many program changes and additions mandated in the law. At issue today — more than 30 years after enactment of the core law — is what progress is being made to achieve its goals. In general, states and environmental groups fault EPA for delays in issuing guidance and providing assistance to carry out the law. EPA and others are critical of states, in turn, for not reaching beyond conventional …

Microelectronic Engineering Education For Emerging Frontiers, Santosh Kurinec, Dale Ewbank, Lynn Fuller, Karl Hirschman

Presentations and other scholarship

With the support provided by the National Science Foundation and RIT Provost’s vision for providing flexible curricula, the department of Microelectronic Engineering has instituted new and enhanced program initiatives – (1) offering a semiconductor processing minor for other science and engineering programs promoting access to state-of-the art semiconductor fabrication facilities to students from other programs; (2) crafting a five course elective sequence within the existing curriculum by eliminating legacy material and course consolidation; (3) developing a concentration program in nanotechnology and MEMS; (4) outreach programs for targeting larger and diverse participation in preparing workforce for the nation’s future high tech …

Experiences With Alloy In Undergraduate Formal Methods, Michael Lutz Jan 2006

Experiences With Alloy In Undergraduate Formal Methods, Michael Lutz

Presentations and other scholarship

At the core of all engineering endeavors is the modeling of proposed system designs and the use of these models to determine system properties. While some models are physical, the vast majority use mathematics to both describe and analyze the consequences of design decisions. In the case of traditional engineering disciplines, most models are based on continuous mathematics, e.g., calculus and differential equations. The situation is quite different in software engineering, however, where the applicable models are more likely to be drawn from discrete mathematics, logic, and set theory. The term of art for such modeling approaches is formal methods.

Decision-Based Specification And Comparison Of Table Recognition Algorithms, Richard Zanibbi, Dorothea Blostein, James Cordy Jan 2006

Decision-Based Specification And Comparison Of Table Recognition Algorithms, Richard Zanibbi, Dorothea Blostein, James Cordy

Presentations and other scholarship

The vast majority of algorithms in the table recognition literature are specified informally as a sequence of operations [7]. This has the undesirable side effects that models of table structure are implicit, defined generatively by the sequence of operations, and that the effects of intermediate decisions are often lost as usually a single interpretation is modified in-place.

We wished to compare the Handley [2] and Hu et al. [4]. table structure recognition algorithms and the complete set of table cell hypotheses they each generated, including any rejected in the final result. Rebuilding the systems using procedural code that transformed data …

The Design And Use Of A Macroeconomics Simulation Using Maple Software: A Pilot Study, Hal W. Snarr, Steven Gold Jan 2006

The Design And Use Of A Macroeconomics Simulation Using Maple Software: A Pilot Study, Hal W. Snarr, Steven Gold

Presentations and other scholarship

The mathematical models used in intermediate macroeconomics have become increasingly more sophisticated and challenging for students to learn. This paper demonstrates how mathematics software, such as Maple, can be used to design a simulation as a pedagogical aid. The paper proceeds by developing a system of equations to model the economy, simulating the system with Maple, and illustrating the impacts of fiscal and monetary policy changes. A pilot test of the simulation was performed to see if higher levels of mathematical rigor could be introduced in a principles course. The results indicate that symbolic mathematics software can be an effective …
