Evidence Of Multidecadal Salinity Variability In The Eastern Tropical North Atlantic, Christopher S. Moses, Peter K. Swart, Brad E. Rosenheim Jan 2006

Evidence Of Multidecadal Salinity Variability In The Eastern Tropical North Atlantic, Christopher S. Moses, Peter K. Swart, Brad E. Rosenheim

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Ocean circulation and global climate are strongly influenced by seawater density, which is itself controlled by salinity and temperature. Although adequate instrumental sea surface temperature (SST) records exist for most of the surface oceans over the past 100–150 years, records of salinity really only exist for the last 40–50 years. Here we show that longer proxy records from corals (Siderastrea radians) in the eastern tropical North Atlantic are dominated by multidecadal variations in salinity which are correlated with the relationship between SST and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) over the course of the 20th century. The data reveal …

Oxygen Depletion In The Gulf Of Mexico Adjacent To The Mississippi River, Nancy N. Rabalais, R. Eugene Turner Jan 2006

Oxygen Depletion In The Gulf Of Mexico Adjacent To The Mississippi River, Nancy N. Rabalais, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

The seasonal formation of a bottom water layer severely depleted in dissolved oxygen has become a perennial occurrence on the Louisiana continental shelf adjacent to the Mississippi River system. Dramatic changes have occurred in this coastal ecosystem in the last half of the 20th century as the loads of dissolved inorganic nitrogen tripled. There are increases in primary production, shifts in phytoplankton community composition, changes in trophic interactions, and worsening severity of hypoxia. The hypoxic conditions (dissolved oxygen less than 2 mg l-1) cover up to 22,000 km2 of the seabed in mid-summer. Dissolved oxygen concentrations seldom decrease to anoxia, …

Implications Of Climate Change And Tephra Accumulation On The Lacustrine Environment In A Volcanic Caldera In Michoacan, Mexico, Tabitha Trosper

Undergraduate Honors Theses

La Alberca is a volcanic caldera in the Michoacan-Guanajuato volcanic field of central Mexico. The oldest known burial ( ~5000 yrs BP) in the state of Michoacan was discovered beneath prehispanic cliff paintings on the caldera wall. The stratigraphy of fluvial and lacustrine sediments exposed in trenches in the caldera floor record environmental changes that have implications for the type of human use of the site. La Alberca is a closed system with an alluvial fan that extends from the northeastern wall into the lowest southern comer of the caldera floor. Paricutin eruption in 1943-52 and other earlier eruptions deposited …

Project Grow: A Plan To Grow An Edible Garden In A Poverty-Affected School To Improve Parent Involvement And Increase Student Knowledge Of Nutrition, Wendy Michelle Wickersham

All Graduate Projects

Growing an edible garden in a poverty-affected school serves multiple purposes. It provides a way to increase parent involvement at the school while increasing student knowledge of nutrition. This comprehensive plan prepares a school to implement a school garden run solely by teacher, students, parents, and community volunteers. The potential results are that parents will get involved at their child's school while the students can learn about nutrition along with their families.

The Role Of Third-Party Verification In Emissions Trading Systems: Developing Best Practices, Jennifer Rohleder Jan 2006

The Role Of Third-Party Verification In Emissions Trading Systems: Developing Best Practices, Jennifer Rohleder

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

This article examines several of the emissions trading systems currently in place around the world and how they conduct their monitoring and verification processes. By comparing the systems, and studying their experiences, we can distill best practices for implementing an effective monitoring and verification protocol. Compliance is required in both a command-and-control system and a trading system; but a trading system has the additional demands of transparency and confidence in the scheme. Verification is critical because it promotes compliance, which in turn is needed to foster trust and stability in the market. Emissions disclosure must be universally trusted in order …

Ip's Problem Child: Shifting The Paradigms For Software Protection, Jacqueline D. Lipton Jan 2006

Ip's Problem Child: Shifting The Paradigms For Software Protection, Jacqueline D. Lipton

UC Law Journal

Computer software is somewhat of a problem child for intellectual property law. Courts and legislatures have struggled to find a balance between encouraging innovation in software development and avoiding undesirable digital information monopolies. Although neither the patent nor the copyright system has provided a particularly satisfactory paradigm for software protection, copyright arguably creates more insidious undercurrents in today's marketplace. If lawmakers do not act expeditiously to stem the tide of copyright protection, the software industry could be facing an intellectual property grab of great proportions which might ultimately impede innovations in software development.

This Article argues for a shifting of …

An Analysis Of Internal Phosphorus Loading In White Lake, Alan Steinman, Mary Ogdahl Jan 2006

An Analysis Of Internal Phosphorus Loading In White Lake, Alan Steinman, Mary Ogdahl

Scientific Technical Reports

An analysis of internal phosphorus loading in White Lake, MI was conducted during the summer, 2006. Sediment cores were removed from 4 sites in White Lake and incubated in the laboratory under aerobic (with oxygen) and anaerobic (without oxygen) conditions. Phosphorus flux from the sediments into the overlaying water column was measured over a 27-day period and compared to rates measured from sediment cores collected previously from Mona and Spring Lakes.

Internal phosphorus loading in White Lake sediments ranged from 1.55 to 7.78 mg TP/m2/d in anaerobic conditions and from -0.18 to 0.14 mg/m2/d in aerobic conditions. The negative value …

Factors Influencing Internal P Loading In A Western Michigan, Drowned River-Mouth Lake, Alan D. Steinman, Lori Nemeth, Eric Nemeth, Richard Rediske

Peer-reviewed scientific publications

Originally published in: J. N. Am. Benthol. Soc., 2006, 25(2):304–312

Release of P from lake sediments may account for a significant portion of a lake’s total P (TP) load. Previous studies using sediment cores showed that ;65% of the total P load entering Spring Lake, Michigan, came from the sediments, and that an alum concentration of 24 mg Al/L effectively inactivated P release in experimental sediment-core tubes. In 2004, we studied the influence of alum concentration and sediment resuspension on P release rates from the sediments. Based on laboratory incubations using alum concentrations of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and …

Servant-Leadership: A Model Aligned With Chaos Theory, Mark Rennaker Jan 2006

Servant-Leadership: A Model Aligned With Chaos Theory, Mark Rennaker

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Greenleaf (1977) proposed the true test of servant-leadership as leaders reproducing their inclination to serve in others. However, current servantleadership models do not clearly demonstrate such generativity. By modifying the Patterson (2003 )-Winston (2003) servant-leadership model to demonstrate more clearly the reproduction of the service inclination both in dyadic and in organizational dimensions, this study will contribute to servant-leadership "theory-building" (Lynham, 2002, p. 221). The proposed servant-leadership model, aligned with chaos theory, will give scholars and practitioners a better understanding of the practice and effect of servantleadership.

The goal of the fault tolerant flight control scheme is to recover an aircraft from failures to its sensors or actuators. A commercially available simulation package, Aviator Visual Design Simulator (AVDS), was used for the purpose of simulation and visualization of the aircraft dynamics and the performance of the control schemes.;For the purpose of the sensor failure detection, identification and accommodation (SFDIA) task, it is assumed that the pitch, roll …

Rules Of Evidence For The Use Of Force In International Law's New Era, Mary Ellen O'Connell Jan 2006

Rules Of Evidence For The Use Of Force In International Law's New Era, Mary Ellen O'Connell

Journal Articles

International law is ready for a period of renewal in this post-post-modern era. I predict this renewal will come from reviving classical doctrines, such as the positive-law doctrine of sources, and from revisiting formalism. Such renewal will not be possible for the international law of evidence because there is no classical doctrine. Perhaps, as Charles Brower suggests, this is because of the differing civil and common law attitudes toward the rules of evidence, especially with respect to the burden of proof. It seems to me, however, that we need a law of evidence in international law, especially for the international …
