Magnetospheric Influence On The Moon's Exosphere, Jody K. Wilson, M. Mendillo, Harlan E. Spence Jul 2006

Magnetospheric Influence On The Moon's Exosphere, Jody K. Wilson, M. Mendillo, Harlan E. Spence

Physics & Astronomy

[1] Atoms in the thin lunar exosphere are liberated from the Moon's regolith by some combination of sunlight, plasma, and meteorite impact. We have observed exospheric sodium, a useful tracer species, on five nights of full Moon in order to test the effect of shielding the lunar surface from the solar wind plasma by the Earth's magnetosphere. These observations, conducted under the dark sky conditions of lunar eclipses, have turned out to be tests of the differential effects of energetic particle populations that strike the Moon's surface when it is in the magnetotail. We find that the brightness of the …

An Sveir Model For Assessing Potential Impact Of An Imperfect Anti-Sars Vaccine, Abba B. Gumel, C. Connell Mccluskey, James Watmough

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The control of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), a fatal contagious viral disease that spread to over 32 countries in 2003, was based on quarantine of latently infected individuals and isolation of individuals with clinical symptoms of SARS. Owing to the recent ongoing clinical trials of some candidate anti-SARS vaccines, this study aims to assess, via mathematical modelling, the potential impact of a SARS vaccine, assumed to be imperfect, in curtailing future outbreaks. A relatively simple deterministic model is designed for this purpose. It is shown, using Lyapunov function theory and the theory of compound matrices, that the dynamics of …

Invariance And Noninvariance Of The Spectra Of Stochastic Electromagnetic Beams On Propogation, Jixiong Pu, Olga Korotkova, Emil Wolf Jul 2006

Invariance And Noninvariance Of The Spectra Of Stochastic Electromagnetic Beams On Propogation, Jixiong Pu, Olga Korotkova, Emil Wolf

Physics Articles and Papers

It has been known for some time that the spectrum of light may change on propagation, even in free space. The theory of this phenomenon was developed within the framework of scalar theory. We generalize it to electromagnetic beams, generated by planar, secondary, stochastic sources. We also derive an electromagnetic analog of the so-called scaling law. When this law is satisfied the normalized spectrum of the beam is the same throughout the far zone and across the source.

Monitoring Sustainability In Tropical Forests: How Changes In Canopy Spatial Pattern Can Indicate Forest Stands For Biodiversity Surveys, Naikoa Aguilar, Geoffrey Henobry Jul 2006

Monitoring Sustainability In Tropical Forests: How Changes In Canopy Spatial Pattern Can Indicate Forest Stands For Biodiversity Surveys, Naikoa Aguilar, Geoffrey Henobry

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Sustainable management of tropical forests has been identified as one of the main objectives for global conservation and management of carbon stocks. Toward this goal, managers need tools to determine whether current management practices are sustainable. Several international initiatives have been undertaken for the development of criteria and indicators to aid managers in moving toward sustainable practices. Despite these efforts, the question of how to apply and assess indicators remains to be answered from an operational, field-based perspective. Field surveys are expensive and time-consuming when management areas are large and in the face of logistical constraints. Thus, there is a …

Xmm-Newton Discovery Of The X-Ray Transient Xmmu J181227.8-181234 In The Galactic Plane, Edward M. Cackett, Rudy Wijnands, Ron Remillard

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications

We report the discovery of an X-ray transient, observed in outburst with XMM-Newton on 2003 March 20, and with position (J2000, approximate positional error 2arcsec). No known source is present at this position and the source was not detected during published ROSAT or ASCA observations of that region. However, the source may be associated with 1H1812-182 detected by HEAO 1, although the error bars on the HEAO 1 position are very large and the two sources could also be unrelated. Therefore, we name the source XMMU J181227.8-181234. Initially, the source was not detected using the All-Sky Monitor (ASM) on-board the …

Query-Based Multicontexts For Knowledge Base Browsing: An Evaluation, Julien Tane, Philipp Cimiano, Pascal Hitzler Jul 2006

Query-Based Multicontexts For Knowledge Base Browsing: An Evaluation, Julien Tane, Philipp Cimiano, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

In [7], we introduced the query-based multicontext theory, which allows to define a virtual space of views on ontological data. Each view is then materialised as a formal context. While this formal context can be visualised in a usual formal concept analysis framework such as Conexp or ToscanaJ, [7] also briefly described how the approach allowed the creation of a novel navigation framework for knowledge bases. The principle of this navigation is based on supporting the user in defining pertinent views. The purpose of this article is to discuss the benefits of the browsing interface. This discussion is performed, …

Modernist Anti-Philosophicalism And Virginia Woolf's Critique Of Philosophy, Michael Lackey Jul 2006

Modernist Anti-Philosophicalism And Virginia Woolf's Critique Of Philosophy, Michael Lackey

English Publications

Woolf was one of many modernists who led an assault on philosophy. Given her anti-philosophical orientation, those scholars who use philosophy to interpret Woolf, I argue, are implicitly at odds with her aesthetic. Crucial to my argument is Woolf's conception of what I refer to as the semiotic unconscious, which predetermines the conceptual systems we use to systematize our experiences of the world. Based on my findings, I suggest an alternative frame for understanding Woolf's treatment of philosophy and, more generally, modernist anti-philosophicalism. Instead of assuming that philosophy signifies intellectual depth, as many scholars do, I suggest approaching Woolf, as …

Ten Steps Applied To Development And Evaluation Of Process-Based Biogeochemical Models Of Estuaries, Barbara J. Robson, Ian T. Webster, David P. Hamilton, Terence Chan, Teemu Kokkonen Jul 2006

Ten Steps Applied To Development And Evaluation Of Process-Based Biogeochemical Models Of Estuaries, Barbara J. Robson, Ian T. Webster, David P. Hamilton, Terence Chan, Teemu Kokkonen

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The procedures involved in model development may be set out ten-step process, beginning with defining the purpose of the model and ending with evaluation of the appropriateness and utility of the completed model. This process, recently outlined by Jakerman et al. [2006], is often iterative as model development is a continuous process that refines and improves the indented capacity of the model. Here, we show how the ten steps of model development are relevant to process-based biogeochemical modeling of aquatic systems, using examples from two case studies: a model of phytoplankton succession and nutrient concentrations in the Swan-Canning Estuary (Western …

Changing Maine, 1960-2010: Teaching Guide, Richard Barringer, New England Environmental Finance Center

Maine History & Policy Development

Unlike forty years ago, none of us is now certain what the future holds for Maine – except that it will be different. Maine has been transformed by the events of the recent decades. We have come into a new world, a new time – a new historical era, if you will. This new era, like previous eras in Maine history, will require of us new ways of thinking, new ways of understanding, new ways of organizing ourselves as a community of people, if the values and culture we share and cherish are to endure and flourish.

The Continued Resonance And Challenge Of The “Ius Commune” In Modern European Contract Law, Martin J. Doris Jul 2006

The Continued Resonance And Challenge Of The “Ius Commune” In Modern European Contract Law, Martin J. Doris

International Journal of Legal Information

The need for a more consistent and coherent European contract law is a current priority of the EC institutions. Despite decades of pointillistic legal harmonization, cross border transactions within the Internal market of the European Union continue to take place in the shadow of divergent procedural and substantive law rules, differing legal cultures and significant linguistic diversities. Whilst national contract law systems function more or less efficiently internally, it is their partial non-compatibility with other Member States’ private laws that provokes isolated distortions on the market. As a consequence, the European Commission has presented its ‘Common Frame of Reference’ research …

Bayesian Decision Networks - Going Beyond Expert Elicitation For Parameterisation And Evaluation Of Ecological Endpoints., C. A. Pollino, Barry T. Hart

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Ecological and integrative analyses routinely involve the synthesis of a range of information sources into a single model. Bayesian decision networks (BDN) are increasingly being used for this purpose because they are flexible, transparent and relatively easy to use. Indeed, BDNs offer a scientific and pragmatic approach to improve decision-making in environmental management, directly addressing management needs, while promoting stakeholder participatory processes. However, despite their advantages, many BDNs developed to meet such needs are not being developed or applied to their full potential. The majority of BDNs published to date rely only on expert opinion to parameterise and evaluate ecologically …

Mike Basin, David Wood Jul 2006

Mike Basin, David Wood

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

MIKE BASIN addresses water allocation, conjunctive use, reservoir operation, or water quality issues. It couples ArcGIS with hydrologic modeling to provide basin-scale solutions. The MIKE BASIN philosophy is to keep modeling simple and intuitive, yet provide in-depth insight for planning and management. In MIKE BASIN, the emphasis is on both simulation and visualization in both space and time, making it appropriate for building understanding and consensus. MIKE BASIN is a quasi-steady-state mass balance model, allowing for routed river flows. The water quality solution assumes purely advective transport. Decay during transport can be modeled. The groundwater description uses the linear reservoir …

A Model For Investment Decision Support Based On Multicriteria Analysis, Irina Glazyrina Jul 2006

A Model For Investment Decision Support Based On Multicriteria Analysis, Irina Glazyrina

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The conventional implementation of polluter pays principle (PPP) in many countries is based on the use of an environmentaltax, which is determined proportionally to the amount of emissions of the polluting substances. Using aspecific mathematical model this study shows that this practice is not adequate for the real negative impact if thepollutant accumulates to a stock in the environment. Moreover, in many cases there is a danger of an unavoidableconflict between the interests of society as a whole and the interests of private business, generated by these proceduresof PPP implementation. This paper also presents a mathematical formula (obtained as an …

Optimal Regional Partitioning For Wildfire Risk Characterization, Paolo Fiorucci, F. Gaetani, R. Minciardi Jul 2006

Optimal Regional Partitioning For Wildfire Risk Characterization, Paolo Fiorucci, F. Gaetani, R. Minciardi

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The efficiency of fire prevention and fire-fighting organization are strictly related with the identification of the elementary Administrative Units, whose physical characteristics and number/quality of resources affect significantly the occurrence and the dynamics of the considered phenomenon. In fact, wildland fire risk is determined by several factors such as vegetation, local climate condition, topography, socio-economical aspects, and, of course, wildfire fighting available resources. A power law distribution can be used to represent the frequency-area relationship empirical wildfire data. Thus, it is possible to think of characterizing a region by its wildland fire regime, which can be defined by the power …

Imagine – Scenario Development For Environmental Impact Assessment Studies, T. Wagener, Y. Liu, S. Stewart, H. Hartman, M. Mahmoud Jul 2006

Imagine – Scenario Development For Environmental Impact Assessment Studies, T. Wagener, Y. Liu, S. Stewart, H. Hartman, M. Mahmoud

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Scenario analysis is a process of evaluating possible future events through the consideration of alternative possible (though not equally likely) outcomes (scenarios). The analysis is designed to enable improved decision-making and assessment through a more complete consideration of possible outcomes and their implications. The development of strategies for water resources planning and management and the assessment of impacts of potential environmental change are often guided by analyzing multiple future scenarios within an Integrated Modeling (IM) framework, usually driven by forcing derived from global climate models and/or possible future socio-economic changes. The process of scenario development involves making explicit and/or implicit …

Declarative Modelling For Architecture Independence And Data/Model Integration: A Case Study, Ferdinando Villa, Marcello Donatelli, Andrea-Emilio Rizzoli, Peter Krause, Sven Kralisch, Frits Van Evert

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The need for integrating dynamic models with independently developed datasets and other models has long been recognized. Only recently, advances in modelling technologies, knowledge representation and protocols for remote communication of structured content have made this goal practical. The same advances make it possible to decouple the representation of a model from its executable implementation in ways that allow unprecedented levels of architecture independence and explicit, transportable model declaration. These developments are crucial to the creation of repositories of models where the models' lifetime is not tied to that of specific modelling paradigms, execution architectures, or storage technology. In this …

Data Mining As A Tool For Environmental Scientists, J. M. Spate, Karina Gibert, Miquel Sànchez-Marrè, E. Frank, Joaquim Comas, Ioannis N. Athanasiadis Jul 2006

Data Mining As A Tool For Environmental Scientists, J. M. Spate, Karina Gibert, Miquel Sànchez-Marrè, E. Frank, Joaquim Comas, Ioannis N. Athanasiadis

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Over recent years a huge library of data mining algorithms has been developed to tackle a variety of problems in fields such as medical imaging and network traffic analysis. Many of these techniques are far more flexible than more classical modelling approaches and could be usefully applied to data-rich environmental problems. Certain techniques such as Artificial Neural Networks, Clustering, Case-Based Reasoning and more recently Bayesian Decision Networks have found application in environmental modelling while other methods, for example classification and association rule extraction, have not yet been taken up on any wide scale. We propose that these and other data …
