Sediment Characteristics And Hydrodynamic Setting Of Reef Platform Sediments Of Kunduchi, North Of Dar Es Salaam Harbour, Y. W. Shaghude, N. Nyandwi, A. N. N. Muzuka, A. M. A. M. Dubi, O. U. Mwaipopo

Tanzania Journal of Science

Sediment grain size distribution, carbonate content and current velocities for the Kunduchi area are used to determine its hydrodynamic setting and sediment characteristics. The sediment mean grain size generally decreases northward. The sediments consist of medium to coarse sand south of the Tegeta River and fine sand further north. The sediment sorting values, which lack a north-south trend, vary from moderately well sorted to poorly sorted. The skewness of the sediment vary from near-symmetrical to very negatively skewed while the peakedness (kurtosis) varies from platykurtic to leptokurtic. The carbonate content increases with distance offshore, whereas the siliciclastic component decreases with …

The Origin Of Late Archaean Granitoids In The Sukumaland Greenstone Belt Of Northern Tanzania: Geochemical And Isotopic Constraints, M. A. H. Maboko, S. Manya Manya, M. Mwache Mwache, R. B. Pedersen, P. Torssander Jul 2006

The Origin Of Late Archaean Granitoids In The Sukumaland Greenstone Belt Of Northern Tanzania: Geochemical And Isotopic Constraints, M. A. H. Maboko, S. Manya Manya, M. Mwache Mwache, R. B. Pedersen, P. Torssander

Tanzania Journal of Science

Granitoids intruding the late Archaean sequences of the Sukumaland Greenstone Belt of northern Tanzania belong to two distinct geochemical suites. Suite 1 is characterised by Na2O/K2O > 1 (1.04 – 4.67), high Sr/Y (56 – 204) and Ba/Rb ratios (6.1 – 27.1) and low Rb/Sr ratios (0.08 - 0.25). The rocks are enriched in Sr (405 – 1264 ppm) and depleted in Yb (0.17 – 0.93 ppm) and Rb (56 – 132 ppm). On chondrite-normalised REE diagrams, the rocks display highly fractionated patterns characterised by relative LREE enrichment ((La/Yb)N = 23 – 128 and (Gd/Yb)N = 3.10 – 8.54) and lower …

Determination Of The Power Law Exponent For Southern Highlands Of Tanzania, H. H. Mwanyika, R. M. Kainkwa

Tanzania Journal of Science

The 1/7th power law is among the methods that have been used to extrapolate wind speed to the hub heights of wind turbines from the measuring levels. However, it tends to underestimate the actual long-term average wind speeds. In this paper, the power law exponent for Makambako, a site located in the southern highland zone of Tanzania, was established using wind speeds measured at heights Z1=2 m and Z2=7 m. The average power law exponent obtained at the test site was 0.47, a value that is substantially higher than the 1/7th power law exponent. It is low during the dry …

Occurrence Of Metacercariae Of Diplostomum And Tylodelphys Species (Diplostomidae) In Clarias Species (Clariidae) Fishes From Lake Victoria, M. J. Musiba, G. Nkwengulila

Tanzania Journal of Science

The localisation and abundance of the metacercariae of Diplostomum and Tylodelphys species among the clariids of Lake Victoria were investigated between April and December 2001. Four species viz. Clarias gariepinus (271), C. alluaudi (65), C. werneri (50) and C. liocephalus (47) were examined, but only C. gariepinus was infected in the brain case and along the nasal cavity. Prevalence of metacercariae was high (>70%). Prevalence and mean intensity were similar between male and female fish. Mean intensity increased with fish size and declined in larger fish for D. mashonense; but declined with the increase in fish size for Tylodelphys …

Self-Assembled Composite Nano-/Micronecklaces With Sio2 Beads In Boron Strings, Hai Ni, Xiaodong Li

Faculty Publications

Nano-/micronecklaces with SiO2 beads in boron strings were synthesized by simply sublimating the desired powders in a sealed quartz tube at high temperature. The boron strings have a rectangular cross section with width varying from 80to1000nm while the SiO2 beads bear either spindle or spherical shape with a size ranging from 100nmto5μm. The spacing between the SiO2 beads is uniform in each boron string. Both the boron strings and the SiO2 beads are amorphous and free of defects. The supersaturated vapors of silicon and oxygen induced the SiO2 bead formation.

Development Of Dynamically-Generated Pages On A Website, Jodi Wagner

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The purpose of this paper is to examine the project management techniques involved in developing dynamically-generated pages for an existing website. The dynamically-generated pages will allow the editors of a website to add and remove content from pages without directly editing the pages themselves. The project will benefit editors, who will be able to spend more time on creating content for the website, which will lead to benefits for site visitors as well, in the form of uniformly designed pages and more content for the site.

Circadian Rhythmicity By Autocatalysis, Arun Mehra, Christian I. Hong, Mi Shi, Jennifer J. Loros, Jay C. Dunlap, Peter Ruoff

Dartmouth Scholarship

The temperature compensated in vitro oscillation of cyanobacterial KaiC phosphorylation, the first example of a thermodynamically closed system showing circadian rhythmicity, only involves the three Kai proteins (KaiA, KaiB, and KaiC) and ATP. In this paper, we describe a model in which the KaiA- and KaiB-assisted autocatalytic phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of KaiC are the source for circadian rhythmicity. This model, based upon autocatalysis instead of transcription-translation negative feedback, shows temperature-compensated circadian limit-cycle oscillations with KaiC phosphorylation profiles and has period lengths and rate constant values that are consistent with experimental observations.

Characterization Of Polar Organic Components In Fine Aerosols In The Southeastern United States: Identity, Origin, And Evolution, Song Gao, Jason D. Surratt, Eladio M. Knipping, Eric S. Edgerton, Mona Shahgholi, John H. Seinfeld

Chemistry and Physics Faculty Articles

Filter samples of fine aerosols collected in the Southeastern United States in June 2004 were analyzed for the characterization of polar organic components. Four analytical techniques, liquid chromatography –mass spectrometry, ion trap mass spectrometry, laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry, and high-resolution mass spectrometry, were used for identification and quantification. Forty distinct species were detected, comprising on average 7.2% and 1.1% of the total particulate organic mass at three inland sites and a coastal site, respectively. The relative abundance of these species displays a rather consistent distribution pattern in the inland region, whereas a different pattern is found at the coastal …

Photoreductive Dissolution Of Ferrihydrite By Methanesulfinic Acid: Evidence Of A Direct Link Between Dimethylsulfide And Iron-Bioavailability, Anne M. Johansen, Jennifer M. Key Jul 2006

Photoreductive Dissolution Of Ferrihydrite By Methanesulfinic Acid: Evidence Of A Direct Link Between Dimethylsulfide And Iron-Bioavailability, Anne M. Johansen, Jennifer M. Key

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Within open‐ocean regions where excess macronutrients are present, phytoplankton growth is limited by the bioavailability of iron supplied to these areas primarily within atmospheric aerosols of crustal origin. However, processes that control the abundance of biologically accessible iron in these aerosols are largely unknown. Here we show that dissolution of ferrihydrite, a surrogate iron(oxy)hydroxide phase found in atmospheric waters, is enhanced in the presence of methanesulfinic acid (MSIA, CH3SO2H, a dimethylsulfide (DMS) oxidation intermediate) in laboratory irradiation experiments with aqueous suspensions that simulate marine aerosol particles. The increased release of soluble Fe(II) is attributed to a …

Using A General Indexing Paradigm To Monitor Rodent Populations, Richard M. Engeman, Desley Whisson Jul 2006

Using A General Indexing Paradigm To Monitor Rodent Populations, Richard M. Engeman, Desley Whisson

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Population monitoring is a valuable component to managing invasive rodent populations. Indices can be efficient methods for monitoring rodent populations, as more labor-intensive density estimation procedures often are impractical or invalid to apply. Many monitoring objectives can be couched in an indexing framework. Indexing procedures obtain maximal utility if they exhibit key characteristics, including being practical to apply, being sensitive to population changes or differences in the target species, having an inherent variance formula to estimate precision of index values, and relying on as few assumptions as possible. Here, a general indexing paradigm that promotes the characteristics that make indices …

Why It Is Time To Eliminate Genomic Patents, Together With Natural Extracts Doctrine That Have Supported Such Patents, Allen K. Yu Jul 2006

Why It Is Time To Eliminate Genomic Patents, Together With Natural Extracts Doctrine That Have Supported Such Patents, Allen K. Yu

ExpressO

The constitutional purpose of intellectual property is to “promote the progress of science and useful arts.” Given the utilitarian basis of patents, it is critical that policies and laws must be continually adjusted to reflect the needs of new technologies. When the law tries to shield itself from rather than confront the realities of underlying technologies, patents end up actually subverting rather than promote technological progress. This paper explores why the natural extracts doctrine belongs to the class of doctrines that subvert progress. The doctrine, established over a century ago to enable the patenting of purified compounds for use as …

Estimating The Cost Of Invasive Species On U.S. Agriculture: The U.S. Soybean Market, D. J. Lee, C.S. Kim, G Schaible

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Soybean production ranks among the largest agricultural cash crops in the U.S., second only to corn. U.S. soybean production topped 3 billion bushels in 2005 with sales of $17 billion. Approximately 58% of U.S. soybeans are grown in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, and Nebraska. A small percentage of the U.S. soybean crop, 2%, goes to human consumption in the form of whole beans, soybean oil, and soybean meal products. A third of the crop, 1 billion bushels per year is exported annually to China, EU, Mexico, Japan, and Taiwan, and other countries. Most of the crop, 2 billion bushels, goes …

A Constructive Incremental Learning Algorithm For Binary Classification Tasks, Christophe G. Giraud-Carrier, Tony R. Martinez Jul 2006

A Constructive Incremental Learning Algorithm For Binary Classification Tasks, Christophe G. Giraud-Carrier, Tony R. Martinez

Faculty Publications

This paper presents i-AA1*, a constructive, incremental learning algorithm for a special class of weightless, self-organizing networks. In i-AA1*, learning consists of adapting the nodes’ functions and the network’s overall topology as each new training pattern is presented. Provided the training data is consistent, computational complexity is low and prior factual knowledge may be used to “prime” the network and improve its predictive accuracy. Empirical generalization results on both toy problems and more realistic tasks demonstrate promise.

Two Energy Efficient Algorithms For Tracking Objects In A Sensor Network, Arvind Rapaka, Sanjay Kumar Madria Jul 2006

Two Energy Efficient Algorithms For Tracking Objects In A Sensor Network, Arvind Rapaka, Sanjay Kumar Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

We propose two energy efficient algorithms for locating a target object moving in an area covered by a wireless ad hoc network. The first algorithm developed conserve energy by efficiently identifying sensor nodes, as Home Nodes, and use only local messages between neighboring nodes to follow the trail of the object. Since we avoid the long-range transmission and maximize the localization, the algorithms reduce the communication cost. The dynamic nature of the second algorithm exploits the predefined parameters such as the object velocity. Our algorithm represents query shipping against the conventional data shipping as a means to reduce the amount …

Structure-Activity Studies Of Glycosphingolipids As Antigens Of Natural Killer T Cells, Randal Donald Goff Jul 2006

Structure-Activity Studies Of Glycosphingolipids As Antigens Of Natural Killer T Cells, Randal Donald Goff

Theses and Dissertations

Glycosphingolipids (GSLs), composed of a polar saccharide head and a lipophilic ceramide tail, are ubiquitous components of the plasma membrane of eukaryotic cells. They serve in many regulatory capacities and have antigenic properties towards natural killer T (NKT) cells of the innate immune system. Critical to the recognition of glycosylceramides by NKT cells are antigen presenting cells (APC), such as dendritic cells, which are responsible for binding, processing, and delivery of ligands to these lymphocytes. This event is mediated by CD1d, a major histocompatibility complex-like protein expressed on the surface of APCs, which binds GSL antigens by the ceramide moiety …

Polyethylene And Polypropylene Nanocomposites Based On Polymerically - Modified Clay Containing Alkylstyrene Units, Jinguo Zhang, Charles A. Wilkie Jul 2006

Polyethylene And Polypropylene Nanocomposites Based On Polymerically - Modified Clay Containing Alkylstyrene Units, Jinguo Zhang, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Sodium montmorillonite was modified with a new polymeric surfactant. The high molecular weight of the surfactant appears to have led to incomplete cation exchange of the clays, but did promote nanocomposite formation with polyethylene and polypropylene. X-ray diffraction combined with transmission electron microscopy revealed a mixed nanocomposite morphology. The thermal stability of the nanocomposites was evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis, while flammability of the nanocomposites was evaluated by cone calorimetry. A significant 40% reduction in peak heat release rate was observed at 10% organo-clay (3% inorganic clay) loading with an even higher 50% reduction at a loading level of 16% modified …

Hydrogen Isotopic Ratios Of Algal And Terrestrial Organic Matter In Lake Tulane, Florida: From A Modern Calibration To The Reconstruction Of Paleoclimatic And Paleohydrologic Conditions, Eric Charles Cross

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Recent sedimentary records have indicated that climate in low latitude, continental environments have varied significantly throughout the mid to late Holocene. In subtropical North America, major climatic phenomena such as the migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and the Bermuda High have been shown to play a major role in this variability. Specifically, the northward migration of the ITCZ and the eastward position of the Bermuda High during summer months leads to warmer and wetter conditions over subtropical North America, and vice versa. A quantitative approach to understanding hydrologic dynamics (i.e. atmospheric circulation patterns, relative humidity) associated with these …

Stephen Ducharme Publications

We report the electrical characteristics of metal-ferroelectric-insulator-semiconductor structures, where the ferroelectric layer is a Langmuir-Blodgett film of a copolymer of 70% vinylidene fluoride and 30% trifluoroethylene. The 36-nm thick copolymer films were deposited on thermally oxidized (10 nm SiO2) p-type silicon and covered with a gold gate electrode. Polarization-field hysteresis loops indicate polarization switching in the polymer film. The device capacitance shows hysteresis when cycling the applied voltage between ±3 V, exhibiting a zero-bias on/off capacitance ratio of over 3:1 and a symmetric memory window 1 V wide, with little evidence of bias that can arise from …
