Modeling And Simulation Of Friction-Limited Continuously Variable Transmissions, Nilabh Srivastava Dec 2006

Modeling And Simulation Of Friction-Limited Continuously Variable Transmissions, Nilabh Srivastava

All Dissertations

Over the last few decades, a lot of research effort has increasingly been directed towards developing vehicle transmissions that accomplish the government imperatives of increased vehicle efficiency and lower exhaust (greenhouse gaseous) emissions. These exhaust emissions can be regulated or lowered by increasing the fuel economy of a vehicle, and CVTs (continuously variable transmissions), indubitably, play a crucial role in this plan to improve the fuel economy. A continuously variable transmission is an emerging automotive transmission technology that offers a continuum of gear ratios between desired limits. A CVT offers numerous advantages over the conventional multi-step gear transmissions such as …

Managing Product Line Asset Bases, John Hunt Dec 2006

Managing Product Line Asset Bases, John Hunt

All Dissertations

Product lines are predicated on collecting assets common to the desired product portfolio, commonly known as the asset base. For many product lines, the size of asset base has become large enough to create a variety of difficulties. The techniques for managing large product line asset bases are unaddressed in the literature.
This research presents new techniques that take advantage of asset base characteristics, unavailable in more general collections, to both reduce the number of assets and to organize the asset base that go beyond what is possible with other software collections. The result is an asset base that is …

Modified Control Software For Imaging Ultracold Atomic Clouds, Dwight L. Whitaker, A. Sharma, J. M. Brown

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

A charge-coupled device (CCD) camera capable of taking high-quality images of ultracold atomic samples can often represent a significant portion of the equipment costs in atom trapping experiment. We have modified the commercial control software of a CCD camera designed for astronomical imaging to take absorption images of ultracold rubidium clouds. This camera is sensitive at 780 nm and has been modified to take three successive 16-bit images at full resolution. The control software can be integrated into a Matlab graphical user interface with fitting routines written as Matlab functions. This camera is capable of recording high-quality images at a …

2d Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (Ale) Model Of Blood Flow In The Left Ventricle Of The Heart / Zati Hakim Azizul Hasan, Azizul Hasan Zati Hakim Dec 2006

2d Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (Ale) Model Of Blood Flow In The Left Ventricle Of The Heart / Zati Hakim Azizul Hasan, Azizul Hasan Zati Hakim

Student Works (2000-2009)

This research is a study of the dynamics of the heart valves and the blood using numerical computational technique. This numerical technique is known as the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) and is introduced in a finite element environment. By means of a mesh movement method, the ALE uses separate sets of reference systems to study the fluid-structure interaction of the heart. The fluid domain is most conveniently described with respect to an Eulerian reference frame while a Lagrangian formulation is more appropriate for the structure domain. Due to the incompatibility factor of the two reference frames, coupling of the reference systems …

Asymmetric Games For Convolution Systems With Applications To Feedback Control Of Constrained Parabolic Equations, Boris S. Mordukhovich Dec 2006

Asymmetric Games For Convolution Systems With Applications To Feedback Control Of Constrained Parabolic Equations, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

The paper is devoted to the study of some classes of feedback control problems for linear parabolic equations subject to hard/pointwise constraints on both Dirichlet boundary controls and state dynamic/output functions in the presence of uncertain perturbations within given regions. The underlying problem under consideration, originally motivated by automatic control of the groundwater regime in irrigation networks, is formalized as a minimax problemof optimal control, where the control strategy is sought as a feedback law. Problems of this type are among the most important in control theory and applications - while most challenging and difficult. Based on the Maximum Principle …

Structural Study Of Mn-Doped Zno Fi Lms By Tem, Xingzhong Li, Jun Zhang, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

The structural study of diluted magnetic semiconductors is important for interpreting the ferromagnetic behavior associated with the materials. In the present work, a series of low concentration Mn-doped ZnO thin films synthesized by pulsed laser deposition was studied by electron microscopy. All films show the wurtzite structure with (001) preferred growth orientation on the Si substrate. Electron diffraction experiments indicate the deterioration of the growth orientation in some areas of the films with increasing Mn concentration, and the existence of a secondary phase, of Mn2O3-type, in the films with larger Mn concentrations. High-resolution electron microscopy images …

Evidence For Multiple Manipulation Processes In Prefrontal Cortex, Dana A. Eldreth, Michael D. Patterson, Anthony J. Porcelli, Bharat B. Biswal, Donovan Rebbechi, Bart Rypma

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is known to subserve working memory (WM) processes. Brain imaging studies of WM using delayed response tasks (DRTs) have shown memory-load-dependent activation increases in dorsal prefrontal cortex (PFC) regions. These activation increases are believed to reflect manipulation of to-be-remembered information in the service of memory-consolidation. This speculation has been based on observations of similar activation increases in tasks that overtly require manipulation by instructing participants to reorder to-be-remembered list items. In this study, we tested the assumption of functional equivalence between these two types of WM tasks. Participants performed a DRT under two conditions with memory …

Traveling Salesman Problem: A Foveating Pyramid Model, Zygmunt Pizlo, Emil Stefanov, John Saalweachter, Zheng Li, Yll Haxhimusa, Walter G. Kropatsch Dec 2006

Traveling Salesman Problem: A Foveating Pyramid Model, Zygmunt Pizlo, Emil Stefanov, John Saalweachter, Zheng Li, Yll Haxhimusa, Walter G. Kropatsch

The Journal of Problem Solving

We tested human performance on the Euclidean Traveling Salesman Problem using problems with 6–50 cities. Results confirmed our earlier findings that: (a) the time of solving a problem is proportional to the number of cities, and (b) the solution error grows very slowly with the number of cities. We formulated a new version of a pyramid model. The new model has an adaptive spatial structure, and it simulates visual acuity and visual attention. Specifically, the model solves the E-TSP problem sequentially by moving attention from city to city, the same way human subjects do. The model includes a parameter representing …

Perceptual Or Analytical Processing? Evidence From Children's And Adult's Performance On The Euclidean Traveling Salesperson Problem, Iris Van Rooij, Alissa Schactman, Helena Kadlec, Ulrike Stege Dec 2006

Perceptual Or Analytical Processing? Evidence From Children's And Adult's Performance On The Euclidean Traveling Salesperson Problem, Iris Van Rooij, Alissa Schactman, Helena Kadlec, Ulrike Stege

The Journal of Problem Solving

The Euclidean Traveling Salesperson Problem (E-TSP) is a useful task to study how humans optimize when faced with computational intractability. It has been found that humans are capable of finding high-quality solutions for E TSP in a relatively short time and with seemingly little cognitive effort. This observation has led to two general proposals: The high quality of performance on E-TSP reflects (a) the output of automatic and innate perceptual processes or (b) a fundamentally intelligent approach to the task by humans. An experiment was performed to compare performance of three age groups (7- year-olds, 12-year-olds, and adults). Our findings …

A Comparison Of Heuristic And Human Performance On Open Versions Of The Traveling Salesperson Problem, James N. Macgregor, Edward P. Chronicle, Thomas C. Ormerod

The Journal of Problem Solving

We compared the performance of three heuristics with that of subjects on variants of a well-known combinatorial optimization task, the Traveling Salesperson Problem (TSP). The present task consisted of finding the shortest path through an array of points from one side of the array to the other. Like the standard TSP, the task is computationally intractable and, as with the standard TSP, people appear to be able to find good solutions with relative ease. The three heuristics used mechanisms that have been cited as potentially relevant in human performance in the standard task. These were: convex hull, nearest neighbor, and …

Are Individual Differences In Performance On Perceptual And Cognitive Optimization Problems Determined By General Intelligence?, Nicholas R. Burns, Michael D. Lee, Douglas Vickers

The Journal of Problem Solving

Studies of human problem solving have traditionally used deterministic tasks that require the execution of a systematic series of steps to reach a rational and optimal solution. Most real-world problems, however, are characterized by uncertainty, the need to consider an enormous number of variables and possible courses of action at each stage in solving the problem, and the need to optimize the solution subject to multiple interacting constraints. There are reliable individual differences in people’s abilities to solve such realistic problems. It also seems likely that people’s ability to solve these difficult problems reflects, or depends on, their intelligence. We …

Multi-Variant Analysis Of Real-World Environmental Variables Affecting Image Fading On Outdoor Synthetic Inkjet Substrates, Elizabeth Kline Dec 2006

Multi-Variant Analysis Of Real-World Environmental Variables Affecting Image Fading On Outdoor Synthetic Inkjet Substrates, Elizabeth Kline

Theses

The permanence of large format, outdoor inkjet signs is a concern for many advertisers and companies creating signs that will be displayed for years or months in such an environment. The permanence industry has focused their research on using equipment to simulate these outdoor conditions the prints face to gauge their fading properties. This research took a more direct approach by placing the prints in an actual outdoor environment and tracking the rate of color change (∆Eab), and the environmental variables. A multiple regression analysis of the data was then used to create prediction models and to eliminate environmental variables …

Information Security Management And Virtual Collaboration: A Western Australian Perspective, Rosanna Fanciulli Dec 2006

Information Security Management And Virtual Collaboration: A Western Australian Perspective, Rosanna Fanciulli

Australian Information Security Management Conference

This paper presents an ongoing case study into stakeholder perceptions regarding information security management systems in emergent organisations operating in Western Australia. It takes a socio-political perspective on the problem of how to manage simultaneously virtual collaboration and information security management. A literature review introduces the context and history of the research. In light of this, it is proposed that social and political issues need to be researched and addressed before many of the existing technological strategies for information security will succeed. The research project is then outlined and the design and preliminary results presented. The results point to a …

Visualization Of Polymer Processing At The Continuum Level, Jeremy Hicks Dec 2006

Visualization Of Polymer Processing At The Continuum Level, Jeremy Hicks

All Theses

Computer animation, coupled with scientific experimentation and modeling, allows scientists to produce detailed visualizations that potentially enable more comprehensive perception of physical phenomena and ultimately, new discoveries. With the use of Maya, an animation and modeling program that incorporates the natural laws of physics to control the behavior of virtual objects in computer animation, data from the modeling of physical processes such as polymer fibers and films can be explored in the visual realm. Currently, few attempts have been made at the continuum level to represent polymer properties via computer animation using advanced graphics. As a result, scientists may be …

Outsourcing: The Security Risk Management Challenge, Carl Colwill Dec 2006

Outsourcing: The Security Risk Management Challenge, Carl Colwill

Australian Information Security Management Conference

The globalisation of business and the growth of the digital networked economy means that virtually any business process can be undertaken by someone else, somewhere in the world. To achieve business transformation within the UK Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector, BT is taking a strategic approach to outsourcing: this has resulted in a rapid and substantial increase in the outsourcing and offshoring of ICT development, maintenance and support contracts. Each and every outsourcing decision could have major security, legal, regulatory and contractual impacts. It is generally recognised that risks are likely to be compounded when outsourcing to companies based …

The Information Security Ownership Question In Iso/Iec 27001 – An Implementation, Lizzie Coles-Kemp, Richard E. Overill Dec 2006

The Information Security Ownership Question In Iso/Iec 27001 – An Implementation, Lizzie Coles-Kemp, Richard E. Overill

Australian Information Security Management Conference

The information security management standard ISO/IEC 27001 is built on the notion that information security is driven by risk assessment and risk treatment. Fundamental to the success of risk assessment and treatment is the decision making process that takes risk assessment output and assigns decisions to this output in terms of risk treatment actions. It is argued that the effectiveness of the management system lies in its ability to make effective, easytoimplement and measurable decisions. One of the key issues in decision making is ownership. In this paper two aspects of information security ownership are considered: ownership of the asset …

Managing Information Security Complexity, Murray Brand Dec 2006

Managing Information Security Complexity, Murray Brand

Australian Information Security Management Conference

This paper examines using a requirements management tool as a common thread to managing the complexity of information security systems. Requirements management provides a mechanism to trace requirements through to design, implementation, operating, monitoring, reviewing, testing, and reporting by creating links to associated, critical artefacts. This is instrumental in managing complex and dynamic systems where change can impact other subsystems and associated documentation. It helps to identify the affected artefacts through many layers. Benefits to this approach would include better project planning and management, improved risk management, superior change management, ease of reuse, enhanced quality control and more effective acceptance …

The Lazarus Effect: Resurrecting Killed Rfid Tags, Christopher Bolan Dec 2006

The Lazarus Effect: Resurrecting Killed Rfid Tags, Christopher Bolan

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Several RFID Standards allow RFID Tags to be ‘killed’ using a specialised command code. ‘Killed’ RFID Tags should be irrevocably deactivated. In actuality, when a valid kill command is sent to a tag four sections of the tags management data are zeroed causing the tag to enter a ‘fault state’ and thus be ignored by RFID readers. Through the reinitialisation of these four sections to valid values it was discovered that a tag could be resurrected and function normally.

The Reality Of Risks From Consented Use Of Usb Devices, Marwan Al-Zarouni Dec 2006

The Reality Of Risks From Consented Use Of Usb Devices, Marwan Al-Zarouni

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Physical security is considered an integral part of information systems security. The idea that small devices pose a security threat for enterprises is well established. On the other hand, consented and supervised access to USB ports via USB flash drives is sometimes allowed. This paper will highlight the risk associated with this kind of access by devices such as IPods and USB flash drives. It will show a proof of concept USB device that runs automatically once connected to a personal computer and copies files and folders from the victim's computer to its storage and executes potentially harmful code on …
