Properties Of Intracellular Magnetite Crystals Produced By Desulfovibrio Magneticus Strain Rs-1, Mihály Pósfai, B. M. Moskowitz, Balázs Arató, Dirk Schüler, Christine Flies, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Richard B. Frankel Sep 2006

Properties Of Intracellular Magnetite Crystals Produced By Desulfovibrio Magneticus Strain Rs-1, Mihály Pósfai, B. M. Moskowitz, Balázs Arató, Dirk Schüler, Christine Flies, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Richard B. Frankel

Physics

Desulfovibrio magneticus strain RS-1 is an anaerobic sulfate-reducing bacterium. Cells form intracellular nanocrystals of magnetite but are only weakly magnetotactic. In order to understand the unusual magnetic response of this strain, we studied magnetite crystals within cells grown with fumarate and sulfate. Many cells grown under either condition did not form magnetic crystals while others contained only 1 to 18 small (~40 nm) magnetite-containing magnetosomes. Bulk magnetic measurements of whole cells showed a superparamagnetic-like behavior, indicating that many of the magnetite crystals are too small to have a permanent magnetic moment at ambient temperature. The temperature of the Verwey transition …

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

Our red-wavelength spectroscopic observations of HD 131861, a previously known single-line multiple system, span 20 years. Now lines of two components, the short-period F5 V primary and G8 V secondary, have been detected. The inner orbit is circular with a period of 3.5507439 days, while the outer orbit of the system has a period of 1642 days or 4.496 yr and a relatively low eccentricity of 0.10. Analysis of the Hipparcos data produces a well-determined astrometric orbit for the long-period system that has an inclination of 52°. Our photometric observations show shallow primary and secondary eclipses of the short-period pair, …

Performance Benchmarks For Custom Applications: Considerations And Strategies, Braulio J. Cabral Sep 2006

Performance Benchmarks For Custom Applications: Considerations And Strategies, Braulio J. Cabral

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The motivation for this research came from the need to solve a problem affecting not only the company used in this study, but also the many other companies in the information technology industry having similar problem: how to conduct performance benchmarks for custom applications in an effective, unbiased, and accurate manner. This paper presents the pros and cons of existing benchmark methodologies. It proposes a combination of the best characteristics of these benchmarks into a methodology that addresses the problem from an application perspective considering the overall synergy between operating system and software. The author also discusses a software design …

Multiattribute Acceptance Sampling Plans., Anup Majumdar Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Irrespective of the type of product, evaluation of conformity to specified requirements of its quality characteristics is an integral part of quality assurance. Although they form a set of necessary verification activities almost at all stages of production, these activities, known as inspection do not add value to the product on their own and are to be kept at their minimum. The sampling inspection where a portion of a collection of product units is inspected on a set of characteristics with a view to making decision about acceptance or otherwise becomes relevant in this context. The number of elements of the …

Potential Field Based Approach For Multi-Threat Containment With Cooperative Robots, Bhushan Mehendale Sep 2006

Potential Field Based Approach For Multi-Threat Containment With Cooperative Robots, Bhushan Mehendale

Theses

Target or threat containment is a process where a team of robots forms a particular formation around a target so that it gets engulfed in it. The robots under consideration run decentralized Swarm-Algorithms that make them cooperate with each other using their local sensing capabilities. Previous work in this area has dealt with robot formations and single threat containment where the target is either fixed or dynamic. In either case the same targets exist throughout the containment process. The challenge is to use such collaborative robots to contain multiple targets that appear at random times, and expire after some time. …

Thermal Analysis Of The Vortex Tube Based Thermocycler For Fast Dna Amplification: Experimental And Two-Dimensional Numerical Results, V. Raghavan, Scott E. Whitney, Ryan J. Ebmeier, Nisha V. Padhye, Michael Nelson, Hendrik J. Viljoen, George Gogos

Hendrik J. Viljoen Publications

In this article, experimental and numerical analyses to investigate the thermal control of an innovative vortex tube based polymerase chain reaction (VT-PCR) thermocycler are described. VT-PCR is capable of rapid DNA amplification and real-time optical detection. The device rapidly cycles six 20 μl 96 bp λ-DNA samples between the PCR stages (denaturation, annealing, and elongation) for 30 cycles in approximately 6 min. Two-dimensional numerical simulations have been carried out using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software FLUENT v.6.2.16. Experiments and CFD simulations have been carried out to measure/predict the temperature variation between the samples and within each sample. Heat transfer rate …

Sequence-Specific Recognition And Cooperative Dimerization Of N-Terminal Aromatic Peptides In Aqueous Solution By A Synthetic Host, Lisa M. Heitmann, Alexander B. Taylor, P John Hart, Adam R. Urbach

Chemistry Faculty Research

This article describes the selective recognition and noncovalent dimerization of N-terminal aromatic peptides in aqueous solution by the synthetic host compound, cucurbit[8]uril (Q8). Q8 is known to bind two aromatic guests simultaneously and, in the presence of methyl viologen, to recognize N-terminal tryptophan over internal and C-terminal sequence isomers. Here, the binding of Q8 to aromatic peptides in the absence of methyl viologen was studied by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), 1H NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. The peptides studied were of sequence X-Gly-Gly, Gly-X-Gly, and Gly-Gly-X (X = Trp, Phe, Tyr, and His). Q8 selectively binds and dimerizes Trp-Gly-Gly …
