Framing A Learning-Based Approach To Interactive System Design, J. Choi, K. Sato Nov 2006

Framing A Learning-Based Approach To Interactive System Design, J. Choi, K. Sato

DRS Biennial Conference Series

When users interact with an interactive system to achieve goals, their knowledge is utilized, accumulated and generated, formulating and continuously modifying their mental models of the system. This process can be considered the users’ learning process of the system. The goal of this research is to identify users’ learning process through interaction, as well as to provide system designers with the knowledge on this process, so that they can employ such knowledge into the design process. This paper, in particular, investigates the relevant literature to form the standpoint of the overall research. The survey encompasses theories and methodologies from three …

Expanding The Boundaries Of Form Theory Developing The Model Evolution Of Form, C Akner. Koler Nov 2006

Expanding The Boundaries Of Form Theory Developing The Model Evolution Of Form, C Akner. Koler

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The design research community is beginning to recognize the organizing capacity of form as a scientific method of its own right. The aim of this study was to a) develop a pedagogically framed case study method that applied a participatory action research approach and b) create a 3-D form model bridging geometric- to organic structures. A 10-step-concept-translation-form method was developed which resulted in a “Evolution of form” model with two axes: The first horizontal axis presents a sequence of geometrically derived forms that gradually take on organic qualities of convexities and concavities. The second axis expands the model in a …

Privileging The Sketch: Coop Himmelblau, Nonlinear Dynamics And The Psychogram, Michael J. Oswald, Michael Chapman Nov 2006

Privileging The Sketch: Coop Himmelblau, Nonlinear Dynamics And The Psychogram, Michael J. Oswald, Michael Chapman

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The Coop Himmelblau partnership of Wolf D Prix and Helmut Swiczinsky has, since the 1960s, been engaged in the attempt to break away from mainstream approaches to architectural design and production. Originally contemporaries of Archigram, Pichler and Kiesler, Coop Himmelblau’s manifestos for architecture have, since that time portrayed a growing preoccupation with feed-back mechanisms, with looping, folding and the attempt to recast architecture as metaphorically chaotic. While there have been extensive critical analyses of Coop Himmelblau’s early post-Vitruvian, or anti-humanist, propositions their approach to design in the late 1980s and early 1990s has rarely been considered in such detail. Throughout …

The Jamaican Female Skills Surplus And Earnings Deficit: A Holistic Explanation, Dawn Richards Elliott Nov 2006

The Jamaican Female Skills Surplus And Earnings Deficit: A Holistic Explanation, Dawn Richards Elliott

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper addresses the poor socio-economic performance of Jamaican females despite superior human capital. A holistic explanation exploring female lifestyle choices is advanced since discipline-specific theories fail to explain occupational clustering and the resulting earnings gap. It is hypothesized that both reflect lifestyle constraints, which may be linked to characteristics of the social environment. Since these constraints affect different groups of women differently, then policies designed to reduce occupational dis-similarity and female-male earnings gap must adapt a dis-aggregated analysis. Catherine Hakim’s model of female dis-aggregation and data from the World Bank’s Living Standards Measurement Survey, LSMS, are used to advance …

Myopic Feminist Individualism In A.S. Byatt’S Arabian Nights’ Tale: ‘The Djinn In The Nightingale’S Eye’, Kathleen Williams Renk Nov 2006

Myopic Feminist Individualism In A.S. Byatt’S Arabian Nights’ Tale: ‘The Djinn In The Nightingale’S Eye’, Kathleen Williams Renk

Journal of International Women's Studies

I take as my point of departure Jane Campbell’s view that Byatt’s “The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye” “exposes the gaps … between the worlds in which twentieth-century women live,” as I situate Byatt’s story within its literary, political, and feminist framework. Viewing “The Djinn” as a condensed pastiche of what Byatt terms “the greatest story ever told,” One Thousand and One Nights, rather than a fairy or wonder tale, I read this tale in relation to Chilla Bulbeck’s insights in Re-orienting Western Feminisms: Women’s Diversity in a Postcolonial World. I argue that in her Arabian Nights’ Tale, …

A Preliminary Study Of Sulfide Mineral Formation In Methane-Rich, Marine Sediments Associated With Anaerobic Methane Oxidation, Cascadia Continental Margin, Offshore Oregon, David Deigert, Walter S. Borowski Nov 2006

A Preliminary Study Of Sulfide Mineral Formation In Methane-Rich, Marine Sediments Associated With Anaerobic Methane Oxidation, Cascadia Continental Margin, Offshore Oregon, David Deigert, Walter S. Borowski

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Within gas hydrate settings, sulfide mineralization in marine sediments is likely controlled by two microbially-mediated, sulfate-depleting processes: anaerobic methane oxidation (AMO) and sulfate reduction. If large amounts of methane are delivered to the sulfate-methane interface (SMI), predominantly by diffusion, larger amounts of solid sulfide sulfur should occur there as dissolved sulfide combines with iron, forming an authigenic precipitate. We measure the amount of diagenetic sulfide sulfur at three locations in the Hydrate Ridge vicinity by extracting the bulk sedimentary sulfide-phase minerals (So, FeS, and FeS2) through chromium reduction, precipitating sulfide sulfur as silver sulfide, and gravimetrically …

[1] Simulations of the stratosphere from thirteen coupled chemistry-climate models (CCMs) are evaluated to provide guidance for the interpretation of ozone predictions made by the same CCMs. The focus of the evaluation is on how well the fields and processes that are important for determining the ozone distribution are represented in the simulations of the recent past. The core period of the evaluation is from 1980 to 1999 but long-term trends are compared for an extended period (1960–2004). Comparisons of polar high-latitude temperatures show that most CCMs have only small biases in the Northern Hemisphere in winter and spring, but …

Unit Testing Considered Useful, George K. Thiruvathukal, Konstantin Läufer, Benjamin Gonzalez Nov 2006

Unit Testing Considered Useful, George K. Thiruvathukal, Konstantin Läufer, Benjamin Gonzalez

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Testing is an important part of application development. Hardware engineers, in particular, have a long established history of testing for the obvious reason that it's awfully hard to rebuild a microprocessor every time a bug pops up in the design stage--not to mention the enormous headaches such bugs generate on the software side.

Linking Brand Equity To Customer Equity, Robert P. Leone, Vithala R. Rao, Kevin Lane Keller, Anita Man Luo, Leigh Mcalister, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Customer equity and brand equity are two of the most important topics to academic researchers and practitioners. As part of the 2005 Thought Leaders Conference held at the University of Connecticut, the authors were asked to review what was known and not known about the relationship between brand equity and customer equity. During their discussions, it became clear that whereas two distinct research streams have emerged and there are distinct differences, the concepts are also highly related. It also became clear that whereas the focus of both brand equity and customer equity research has been on the end consumer, there …

To Evaluate The Effects Of The Introduction Of A Smoke-Free Environment On The Lung Function Of Bar Workers In Dublin, Michele Agnew

Masters

It has long been recognised that exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) causes respiratory and cardio-vascular disease. A ban, prohibiting smoking in the workplace, was sanctioned by the Irish government and came into effect on 29 March, 2004. Bar staff were an ideal group to study the health effects of the introduction of this ban. Methods Workers were recruited through their Trade Union, Mandate, and 81 participated in the pre-ban phase of testing between September 2003 and March 2004. They attend the Respiratory Laboratory in St. James’s Hospital and underwent lung function tests and measurement of exhaled carbon monoxide (CO). …

New Paradigm Of Inference Control With Trusted Computing, Yanjiang Yang, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng Nov 2006

New Paradigm Of Inference Control With Trusted Computing, Yanjiang Yang, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The database server is a crucial bottleneck in traditional inference control architecture, as it enforces highly computation-intensive auditing for all users who query the protected database. As a result, most auditing methods, though rigorously studied, can never be implemented in practice for protecting largescale real-world database systems. To shift this paradigm, we propose a new inference control architecture that will entrust inference control to each users platform, provided that the platform is equipped with trusted computing technology. The trusted computing technology is designed to attest the state of a users platform to the database server, so as to assure the …

Dynamic Programming-Based Energy-Efficient Rate Adaptation For Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Maciej Jan Zawodniok, Jagannathan Sarangapani Nov 2006

Dynamic Programming-Based Energy-Efficient Rate Adaptation For Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Maciej Jan Zawodniok, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Resource constraints require that ad hoc wireless networks are energy efficient during transmission and rate adaptation. In this paper we propose a novel cross-layer energy-efficient rate adaptation scheme that employs dynamic programming (DP) principle to analytically select the modulation scheme online. The scheme uses channel state information from the physical layer and congestion information from the scheduling layer to select a modulation rate. This online selection maximizes throughput while saving energy and preventing congestion. The simulation results indicate that an increase in throughput by 96% and energy-efficiency by 131% is observed when compared to the Receiver Based AutoRate (RBAR) protocol.

Optimal Placement And Control Of Unified Power Flow Control Devices Using Evolutionary Computing And Sequential Quadratic Programming, Radha P. Kalyani, Mariesa Crow, Daniel R. Tauritz Nov 2006

Optimal Placement And Control Of Unified Power Flow Control Devices Using Evolutionary Computing And Sequential Quadratic Programming, Radha P. Kalyani, Mariesa Crow, Daniel R. Tauritz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A crucial factor effecting modern power systems today is power flow control. An effective means for controlling and improving power flow is by installing fast reacting devices such as a unified power flow controller (UPFC). For maximum positive impact of this device on the power grid, it should be installed at an optimal location and employ an optimal realtime control algorithm. This paper proposes the combination of an evolutionary algorithm (EA) to find the optimal location and sequential quadratic programming (SQP) to optimize the UPFC control settings. Simulations are conducted using the classic IEEE 118 bus test system. For comparison …

Design Of Metal-Organic Framework Materials Based Upon Inorganic Clusters And Polycarboxylates, Zhenqiang Wang Nov 2006

Design Of Metal-Organic Framework Materials Based Upon Inorganic Clusters And Polycarboxylates, Zhenqiang Wang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Network structures based upon metal-organic backbones represent a new class of functional materials that can be rationally constructed by employing the concepts of supramolecular chemistry and crystal engineering. The modularity of design strategies, the diversity of prototypal structures, and the dynamic features of networks have afforded great advantages over traditional materials syntheses. The research presented in this dissertation is primarily concerned with developing an in-depth understanding of the basic principles that govern the supramolecular behaviors of metal-organic frameworks and gaining an experimental control over the structure and function of these new classes of hybrid materials.

The use of rigid and …

Reflections On Discrimination, Alan Wertheimer Nov 2006

Reflections On Discrimination, Alan Wertheimer

San Diego Law Review

In the background are two claims that I want to put on the table. First, although it may be wrong for people to engage in a particular form of discrimination, it does not follow that the government should seek to prevent that discrimination. Second, although it may not be wrong for people to engage in a particular form of discrimination, it does not follow that it would be wrong for the government to seek to prevent that discrimination or to mitigate its effects. The wrongness of individual behavior is obviously related to the justifiability of state action, but the correlation …

Left Libertarianism: What's In It For Me?, H. E. Baber Nov 2006

Left Libertarianism: What's In It For Me?, H. E. Baber

San Diego Law Review

Left libertarianism cannot effectively promote equal opportunity for well-being. Neither direct distributions from the rent fund nor financial incentives for firms will significantly reduce gross, ongoing discrimination which locks most women into a narrow range of boring, dead-end, pink collar drudge jobs and puts minorities at a disadvantage in hiring, housing, and access to credit. Left libertarianism: What's in it for me? Not much.

Improving Database Quality Through Eliminating Duplicate Records, Mingzhen Wei, Andrew H. Sung, Martha E. Cather Nov 2006

Improving Database Quality Through Eliminating Duplicate Records, Mingzhen Wei, Andrew H. Sung, Martha E. Cather

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Redundant or duplicate data are the most troublesome problem in database management and applications. Approximate field matching is the key solution to resolve the problem by identifying semantically equivalent string values in syntactically different representations. This paper considers token-based solutions and proposes a general field matching framework to generalize the field matching problem in different domains. By introducing a concept of String Matching Points (SMP) in string comparison, string matching accuracy and efficiency are improved, compared with other commonly-applied field matching algorithms. The paper discusses the development of field matching algorithms from the developed general framework. The framework and corresponding …

Mantle Transition Zone Discontinuities Beneath The Baikal Rift And Adjacent Areas, Kelly H. Liu, Stephen S. Gao Nov 2006

Mantle Transition Zone Discontinuities Beneath The Baikal Rift And Adjacent Areas, Kelly H. Liu, Stephen S. Gao

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Like most other major continental rifts, the Baikal rift zone (BRZ) in Siberia is presumably underlain by a hot and partially molten mantle, which has a reduced seismic velocity relative to surrounding areas. Recent seismic tomography studies, however, gave conflicting results about the depth extent and even the existence of the low-velocity anomaly beneath the BRZ, suggesting that additional constraints are needed. Here we present results from stacking of about 1700 radial P-to-S receiver functions from a single long-running seismic station, TLY, located at the SW tip of Lake Baikal. A clear uplift of the 410 km discontinuity (d410) with …

Detection And Identification Of Vehicles Based On Their Unintended Electromagnetic Emissions, Xiaopeng Dong, Haixiao Weng, Daryl G. Beetner, Todd H. Hubing, Donald C. Wunsch, Michael Noll, Huseyin Goksu, Benjamin Moss Nov 2006

Detection And Identification Of Vehicles Based On Their Unintended Electromagnetic Emissions, Xiaopeng Dong, Haixiao Weng, Daryl G. Beetner, Todd H. Hubing, Donald C. Wunsch, Michael Noll, Huseyin Goksu, Benjamin Moss

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

When running, vehicles with internal combustion engines radiate electromagnetic emissions that are characteristic of the vehicle. Emissions depend on the electronics, harness wiring, body type, and many other features. Since emissions are unique to each vehicle, these may be used for identification purposes. This paper investigates a procedure for detecting and identifying vehicles based on their RF emissions. Parameters like the average magnitude or standard deviation of magnitude within a frequency band were extracted from measured emission data. These parameters were used as inputs to an artificial neural network (ANN) that was trained to identify the vehicle that produced the …

Low-Latency Broadcast In Multirate Wireless Mesh Networks, Chun Tung Chou, Archan Misra, Junaid Qadir Nov 2006

Low-Latency Broadcast In Multirate Wireless Mesh Networks, Chun Tung Chou, Archan Misra, Junaid Qadir

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In a multirate wireless network, a node can dynamically adjust its link transmission rate by switching between different modulation schemes. In the current IEEE802.11a/b/g standards, this rate adjustment is defined for unicast traffic only. In this paper, we consider a wireless mesh network (WMN), where a node can dynamically adjust its link-layer multicast rates to its neighbors, and address the problem of realizing low-latency network-wide broadcast in such a mesh. We first show that the multirate broadcast problem is significantly different from the single-rate case. We will then present an algorithm for achieving low-latency broadcast in a multirate mesh which …

On The Effective Communication Of The Results Of Empirical Studies, Part Ii, Lee Epstein, Andrew D. Martin, Matthew M. Schneider Nov 2006

On The Effective Communication Of The Results Of Empirical Studies, Part Ii, Lee Epstein, Andrew D. Martin, Matthew M. Schneider

Vanderbilt Law Review

In an important and certainly timely article published in the N.Y. U. Law Review, Nancy C. Staudt demonstrates that, in taxpayer standing cases, judges are motivated by politics but can be constrained when the law is clear and oversight exists. As part of that demonstration, Professor Staudt offers an empirical analysis of the decision to grant standing to federal taxpayers-the results of which we reproduce in Table 1.2

What are we to make of this rather ominous-looking table? Professor Staudt suggests two key takeaways. First, the analysis, she reports, shows that doctrine helps explain standing decisions even when political factors …

Jointly Hyponormal Pairs Of Commuting Subnormal Operators Need Not Be Jointly Subnormal, Raúl E. Curto, Jasang Yoon Nov 2006

Jointly Hyponormal Pairs Of Commuting Subnormal Operators Need Not Be Jointly Subnormal, Raúl E. Curto, Jasang Yoon

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We construct three different families of commuting pairs of subnormal operators, jointly hyponormal but not admitting commuting normal extensions. Each such family can be used to answer in the negative a 1988 conjecture of R. Curto, P. Muhly and J. Xia. We also obtain a sufficient condition under which joint hyponormality does imply joint subnormality.
