Assessment Of Long-Range Correlation In Time Series: How To Avoid Pitfalls, J. B. Gao, J. Hu, W. W. Tung, Y. H. Cao, N. Sarshar, V. P. Roychowdhury

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Due to the ubiquity of time series with long-range correlation in many areas of science and engineering, analysis and modeling of such data is an important problem. While the field seems to be mature, three major issues have not been satisfactorily resolved. (i) Many methods have been proposed to assess long-range correlation in time series. Under what circumstances do they yield consistent results? (ii) The mathematical theory of long-range correlation concerns the behavior of the correlation of the time series for very large times. A measured time series is finite, however. How can we relate the fractal scaling break at …

Ultrasensitive Mass Sensing Using Mode Localization In Coupled Microcantilevers, M. Spletzer, A. Raman, A. Q. Wu, X. F. Xu, R. Reifenberger Jan 2006

Ultrasensitive Mass Sensing Using Mode Localization In Coupled Microcantilevers, M. Spletzer, A. Raman, A. Q. Wu, X. F. Xu, R. Reifenberger

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We use Anderson or vibration localization in coupled microcantilevers as an extremely sensitive method to detect the added mass of a target analyte. We focus on the resonance frequencies and eigenstates of two nearly identical coupled gold-foil microcantilevers. Theoretical and experimental results indicate that the relative changes in the eigenstates due to the added mass can be orders of magnitude greater than the relative changes in resonance frequencies. Moreover this sensing paradigm possesses intrinsic common mode rejection characteristics thus providing an alternate way to achieve ultrasensitive mass detection under ambient conditions. Distinguishing Chaos From Noise By Scale-Dependent Lyapunov Exponent, J. B. Gao, J. Hu, W. W. Tung, Y. H. Cao Jan 2006

Distinguishing Chaos From Noise By Scale-Dependent Lyapunov Exponent, J. B. Gao, J. Hu, W. W. Tung, Y. H. Cao

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Time series from complex systems with interacting nonlinear and stochastic subsystems and hierarchical regulations are often multiscaled. In devising measures characterizing such complex time series, it is most desirable to incorporate explicitly the concept of scale in the measures. While excellent scale-dependent measures such as epsilon entropy and the finite size Lyapunov exponent (FSLE) have been proposed, simple algorithms have not been developed to reliably compute them from short noisy time series. To promote widespread application of these concepts, we propose an efficient algorithm to compute a variant of the FSLE, the scale-dependent Lyapunov exponent (SDLE). We show that with …

Efficient Algorithm For Random-Bond Ising Models In 2d, Y. L. Loh, E. W. Carlson Jan 2006

Efficient Algorithm For Random-Bond Ising Models In 2d, Y. L. Loh, E. W. Carlson

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present an efficient algorithm for calculating the properties of Ising models in two dimensions, directly in the spin basis, without the need for mapping to fermion or dimer models. The algorithm computes the partition function and correlation functions at a single temperature on any planar network of N Ising spins in O(N-3/2) time or less. The method can handle continuous or discrete bond disorder and is especially efficient in the case of bond or site dilution, where it executes in O(NlnN) time near the percolation threshold. We demonstrate its feasibility on the ferromagnetic Ising model and the +/- J …

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

In most experiments on the Casimir force the comparison between measurement data and theory was done using the concept of the root-mean-square deviation, a procedure that has been criticized in the literature. Here we propose a special statistical analysis which should be performed separately for the experimental data and for the results of the theoretical computations. In so doing, the random, systematic and total experimental errors are found as functions of separation, taking into account the distribution laws for each error at 95% confidence. Independently, all theoretical errors are combined to obtain the total theoretical error at the same confidence. …

Direct Simulation Of Transport In Open-Cell Metal Foams, S. Krishnan, J. Y. Murthy, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Flows in porous media may be modeled using two major classes of approaches: (a) a macroscopic approach, where volume-averaged semiempirical equations are used to describe flow characteristics, and (b) a microscopic approach, where small-scale flow details are simulated by considering the specific geometry of the porous medium. In the first approach, small-scale details are ignored and the information so lost is represented in the governing equations using an engineering model. In the second, the intricate geometry of the porous structures is accounted for and the transport through these structures computed. The latter approach is computationally expensive if the entire physical …

Design Of Near-Optimal Waveforms For Chest And Abdominal Compression And Decompression In Cpr Using Computer-Simulated Evolution, Charles F. Babbs Jan 2006

Design Of Near-Optimal Waveforms For Chest And Abdominal Compression And Decompression In Cpr Using Computer-Simulated Evolution, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Objective: To discover design principles underlying the optimal waveforms for external chest and abdominal compression and decompression during cardiac arrest and CPR. Method: A 14-compartment mathematical model of the human cardiopulmonary system is used to test successive generations of randomly mutated external compression waveforms during cardiac arrest and resuscitation. Mutated waveforms that produced superior mean perfusion pressure became parents for the next generation. Selection was based upon either systemic perfusion pressure (SPP=thoracic aortic minus right atrial pressure) or upon coronary perfusion pressure (CPP=thoracic aortic pressure minus myocardial wall pressure). After simulations of 64,414 individual CPR episodes, 40 highly evolved waveforms …

A New Biomechanical Head Injury Criterion, Charles F. Babbs Jan 2006

A New Biomechanical Head Injury Criterion, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a new analysis of the physics of closed head injury caused by intense acceleration of the head. At rest a 1 cm gap filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) separates the human brain from the skull. During impact whole head acceleration induces artificial gravity within the skull. Because its density differs slightly from that of CSF, the brain accelerates, strikes the inner aspect of the rigid skull, and undergoes viscoelastic deformation. Analytical methods for a lumped parameter model of the brain predict internal brain motions that correlate well with published high-speed photographic studies. The same methods predict a …

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Melting In A Cylinder, B Jones, D Sun, S Krishnan, S V. Garimella Jan 2006

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Melting In A Cylinder, B Jones, D Sun, S Krishnan, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Well-controlled and well-characterized experimental measurements are obtained during the melting of a moderate-Prandtl-number material (n-eicosane) in a cylindrical enclosure heated from the side. The study aims to provide benchmark experimental measurements for validation of numerical codes. Experimental results in terms of measured temperatures and melt front locations are reported in both graphical and tabular forms. The melt front was captured photographically and its location ascertained using digital image processing techniques. To facilitate numerical validation exercises, a complete set of experimental results have been made available on a website for public access. An illustrative numerical comparison exercise was also undertaken using …
