The Coloniser And The Colonised: Reflections On Translation As Contested Space, Harry Aveling Oct 2006

The Coloniser And The Colonised: Reflections On Translation As Contested Space, Harry Aveling

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Teaching Language As A Political Act, Roberto E. Bahruth Oct 2006

Teaching Language As A Political Act, Roberto E. Bahruth

Literacy, Language, and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

"The most powerful act in the world is to name something" Noam Chomsky "Any way of seeing the world is also a way of not seeing the world." Gregory Bateson

An important dimension of critical pedagogy includes the questioning of traditional terminology used to explain reality. In the process of schooling people often learn language which supports the thinking of the dominant paradigm. Many become fluent in the language of impossibility as they are schooled. In response to this, I always try to keep in mind two central points as I teach languages: One is to undo the damage of …

Medicine In The Margins: Access, Resistance And Health Care Utilization Among The Tuareg Of Niger, Teeb Al-Samarrai Oct 2006

Medicine In The Margins: Access, Resistance And Health Care Utilization Among The Tuareg Of Niger, Teeb Al-Samarrai

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

This thesis explores the historical, cultural and social reasons for the wariness that the nomadic Tuareg of Niger have towards Western medicine and medical practitioners. I give a historical account of their interactions with and resistance to the French colonial administration and the postcolonial state of Niger and how this resistance to Western medicine and health clinics was an embodied form of political and social resistance to governmentality and state attempts at sedentarization. I provide historical example of when health care delivery was successful and was embraced rather than resisted as well as the ways in which the Tuareg have …

A Pedagogical Experiment On Liberal Democracy In South Asia, Jeffrey Drope

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

In the spring of 2006, a junior-level political science class focusing on democracy at the University of Miami and the Nepal Study Center at the University of New Mexico collaborated on a pedagogical experiment that sought to enhance learning opportunities about liberal democracy by promoting intellectual exchange between two nations, Nepal and the U.S. This abstract will introduce the program, note several key themes of the students’ proposals to address issues of democratization, and highlight directions for future related activities.

Comparative Study Of Federation Proposals For Nepal, Vijaya R. Sharma Oct 2006

Comparative Study Of Federation Proposals For Nepal, Vijaya R. Sharma

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

At the time Nepal is planning for an unprecedented task of forming constitution through a constituent assembly of people’s representatives, restructuring of Nepal into a federation of autonomous or semi-autonomous states has been prominently proposed by some scholars, the Federation of Indigenous Nationalities, and some major political parties, like the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoists), the Communist Party of Nepal (UML), Jana Morcha, and Nepal Sadbhawana Party. To my knowledge there are at least 14 proposals already made, which can be classified into two groups. Proposals in one group consider the meeting of political aspirations and demands of ethnic and …

A P2p Integration Architecture For Protein Resources, K. T. Claypool, Sanjay Kumar Madria Oct 2006

A P2p Integration Architecture For Protein Resources, K. T. Claypool, Sanjay Kumar Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The availability of a direct pathway from a primary sequence (denovo or DNA derived) to macromolecular structure to biological function using computer-based tools is the ultimate goal for a protein scientist. Today's state of the art protein resources and on-going research and experiments provide the raw data that can enable protein scientists to achieve at least some steps of this goal. Thus, protein scientists are looking towards taking their benchtop research from the specific to a much broader base of using the large resources of available electronic information. However, currently the burden falls on the scientist to manually interface with …
