Gender And Bilinguals' Creativity, Wendy Baker
Gender And Bilinguals' Creativity, Wendy Baker
Faculty Publications
Research on the influence of gender on language across different cultures has mostly concentrated on qualitive measures of analysis. These measures demonstrate that there are differences in rhetorical and literary style across world Englishes in both the inner and outer circle. Using Biber's multidimensional analysis (1988) to examine a large corpus of world English literatures written in Indian, West African, Britain, Anglo-American and Mexican American varieties of English, this paper examines whether quantitative analyses can also be insightful and useful in the examination of the influence of gender on language and in expanding our understanding of what "bilingual creativity" entails. …
Educational Ideas And The Future Of Our Society, Mallory Sue Smiens
Educational Ideas And The Future Of Our Society, Mallory Sue Smiens
Honors Program Theses
Thus, the study of children and educational theories provided a rationale for the present study. Further discussions led to the belief that the questions raised by the author would best be answered from a sociological perspective. Because sociology is often employed to study people and how they interact with one another, it provides a meaningful discipline to weigh the teacher preparation ideas and practices against in order to determine their wider consequences for individuals. Therefore, a study of basic sociology was undertaken.

Hickling-Hudson, Anne, Julie Matthews, and Annette Woods, eds. Disrupting Preconceptions: Postcolonialism and Education. Brisbane: Post Pressed, 2004.
ISBN 1-876682-56-6
The book grew out of a conference held in August 2001 at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. It is composed of a collection of thirteen essays that address postcolonialism in education. The presenters examine the postcolonial in educational structures and practices in Asia, Africa, North America, and Australia, but the colonial legacy remains—the language of the conference is English, the publisher is Australian, and the book is printed in Great Britain.

Relationships Between Deflector Faults, Collapse Dolines And Collector Channel Formation: Some Examples From Slovenia, France Šušteršič
Relationships Between Deflector Faults, Collapse Dolines And Collector Channel Formation: Some Examples From Slovenia, France Šušteršič
International Journal of Speleology
In some Slovenian caves collector channels gather sinking underground streams and redirect them for potentially long distances parallel to certain faults. The collector channels formed due to ongoing long-term collapse of cave roofs at the points where passages break through the faults, which function as a kind of screen and are termed deflector faults. The fault trends are marked by collapse within the caves, and by active collapse dolines at the surface.
An Operator-Based Account Of Semantic Processing, Deryle W. Lonsdale, C. Anton Rytting
An Operator-Based Account Of Semantic Processing, Deryle W. Lonsdale, C. Anton Rytting
Faculty Publications
This paper explores issues of psychological plausibility in modeling natural language understanding within Soar, a symbolic cognitive model. It focuses on constructing syntactic and semantic representations in simulated real time, with particular emphasis on word sense disambiguation (WSD). We discuss (i) what level of WSD should be modeled and (ii) how to use resources such as WordNet to inform these models. A preliminary model of coarse-grained WSD is included to show how syntactic, semantic, and other knowledge sources interact in Soar. Finally, we explore issues of interleaving, learning, and integrating other WSD approaches with Soar's native model of learning.

Proximity In Context: An Empirically Grounded Computational Model Of Proximity For Processing Topological Spatial Expression., John D. Kelleher, Geert-Jan Kruijff, Fintan Costello
Conference papers
The paper presents a new model for context-dependent interpretation of linguistic expressions about spatial proximity between objects in a natural scene. The paper discusses novel psycholinguistic experimental data that tests and verifies the model. The model has been implemented, and enables a conversational robot to identify objects in a scene through topological spatial relations (e.g. ''X near Y''). The model can help motivate the choice between topological and projective prepositions.

Structural Descriptions In Human-Assisted Robot Visual Learning, Geert-Jan Kruijff, John D. Kelleher, Gregor Berginc, Ales Leonardis
Conference papers
The paper presents an approach to using structural descriptions, obtained through a human-robot tutoring dialogue, as labels for the visual ob ject models a robot learns. The paper shows how structural descriptions can relate models for different aspects of one and the same object, and how relating descriptions for visual models and discourse referents enables incremental updating of model descriptions through dialogue (either robot- or human-initiated). The approach has been implemented in an integrated architecture for human-assisted robot visual learning.
A Computational Model Of The Referential Semantics Of Projective Prepositions, John D. Kelleher, Josef Van Genabith
A Computational Model Of The Referential Semantics Of Projective Prepositions, John D. Kelleher, Josef Van Genabith
Conference papers
In this paper we present a framework for interpreting locative expressions containing the prepositions in front of and behind. These prepositions have different semantics in the viewer-centred and intrinsic frames of reference (Vandeloise, 1991). We define a model of their semantics in each frame of reference. The basis of these models is a novel parameterized continuum function that creates a 3-D spatial template. In the intrinsic frame of reference the origin used by the continuum function is assumed to be known a priori and object occlusion does not impact on the applicability rating of a point in the spatial template. …
Information Fusion For Visual Reference Resolution In Dynamic Situated Dialogue., Geert-Jan Kruijff, John D. Kelleher, Nick Hawes
Information Fusion For Visual Reference Resolution In Dynamic Situated Dialogue., Geert-Jan Kruijff, John D. Kelleher, Nick Hawes
Conference papers
Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) invariably involves dialogue about objects in the environment in which the agents are situated. The paper focuses on the issue of resolving discourse references to such visual objects. The paper addresses the problem using strategies for intra-modal fusion (identifying that different occurrences concern the same object), and inter-modal fusion, (relating object references across different modalities). Core to these strategies are sensori-motoric coordination, and ontology-based mediation between content in different modalities. The approach has been fully implemented, and is illustrated with several working examples
Spatial Prepositions In Context: The Semantics Of Near In The Presence Of Distractor Objects., Fintan Costello, John D. Kelleher
Spatial Prepositions In Context: The Semantics Of Near In The Presence Of Distractor Objects., Fintan Costello, John D. Kelleher
Conference papers
The paper examines how people’s judgements of proximity between two objects are influenced by the presence of a third object. In an experiment participants were presented with images containing three shapes in different relative positions, and asked to rate the acceptability of a locative expression such as ‘the circle is near the triangle’ as descriptions of those images. The results showed an interaction between the relative positions of objects and the linguistic roles that those objects play in the locative expression: proximity was a decreasing function of the distance between the object in the head position in the expression and …
A Mormon And Still A Jew: The Life Of Alexander Neibaur, Fred E. Woods
A Mormon And Still A Jew: The Life Of Alexander Neibaur, Fred E. Woods
Faculty Publications
Alexander Neibaur was a man of many talents. An educated man and gifted poet, he was fluent in seven languages. One account describes Neibaur as "a small, thin man, with a round ruddy face, with sharp eyes." He was also unusual inasmuch as he was Utah's first dentist and matchmaker, and the first known male Jewish convert to Mormonism; and he left the only known contemporary diary account of Joseph Smith's first vision experience. Neibaur was also a good family man, honest and loyal, and a kind friend and trusted neighbor, not only to fellow Church members but also to …
Telling Our Stories: A Phenomenological Study Of The Leader’S Gendered Experience Of Self-Disclosing, Dee Giffin Flaherty
Telling Our Stories: A Phenomenological Study Of The Leader’S Gendered Experience Of Self-Disclosing, Dee Giffin Flaherty
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Leadership is a personal process that involves creating communities and influencing change through relationships of influence. This research explores one aspect of leadership, that of self-disclosing. The self-disclosure of leaders affects all aspects of leadership. Self-disclosure is personal in that people’s voices are unique and come from their sense of self. The appropriate use of self-disclosure can facilitate increased self-awareness, and greater mental and physical health. Leaders can influence change by the strategic sharing of their disclosures. Communities are built when people can identify with leaders stories and be guided toward a shared vision. The purpose of this study is …
Adjusting The Margins: Building Bridges Between Deaf And Hearing Cultures Through Performance Arts, Luane Ruth Davis Haggerty
Adjusting The Margins: Building Bridges Between Deaf And Hearing Cultures Through Performance Arts, Luane Ruth Davis Haggerty
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This study addresses a gap in scholarship on leadership styles in the Deaf community. There is an invisible style of leadership differing from the mainstream culture not previously addressed in the literature at any depth. My study is composed of three interlocking parts; the practice of anthropology: fieldwork, analysis, and presentation. The foundation for my fieldwork, is an "archeology of the structure of the perceived world" (Merleau-Ponty), using the holding environment of the rehearsal process and the structural process of an acting technique called Del-Sign. Del-Sign is a fusion acting style created by combining American Sign Language and the Delsarte …

I don't know that I can define or articulate my leadership style. I can only think that I always tried to be prepared musically. Beyond that I guess I just tried to get the job done in a way that enables others to do their best and that affirms and supports them as professionals and as wondeiful people. -Henry Charles Smith A large portion of existing servant-leadership literature focuses on defining what it is, describing how it differs from other leadership practices, discussing its merits, verifying its efficacy, and persuading others to embrace and practice its principles across a broad …
Genocide On The Airwaves: An Analysis Of The International Law Concerning Radio Jamming, Meghna Rajadhyaksha
Genocide On The Airwaves: An Analysis Of The International Law Concerning Radio Jamming, Meghna Rajadhyaksha
Journal of Hate Studies
Using the Rwandan genocide as an example, this article makes a case for allowing the jamming of radios that are broadcasting hate speech in situations in which such hate speech would incite genocide. To this end, it discusses the law relating to freedom of speech and communication in international law and its relative position when applied to genocide. Further, it analyzes the traditional notions of state sovereignty to make a case for humanitarian intervention by radio jamming. Finally, it recommends the establishment of a body under the aegis of the UN with the mandate and equipment to jam incendiary broadcasts …
Sakyadhita Pilgrimage In Asia: On The Trail Of The Buddhist Women's Movement, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd
Sakyadhita Pilgrimage In Asia: On The Trail Of The Buddhist Women's Movement, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd
Theology and Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship
Sakyadhita International Association of Buddhist Women was established in 1987 to address issues of gender equality in Buddhist societies and Buddhist institutions. Since then, through a series of innovative biannual conferences, Sakyadhita has worked to link women from different Buddhist traditions and cultural backgrounds and provide them with a forum where women’s voices can be heard. These conferences have generated a vibrant international Buddhist women’s movement that works for the welfare of the world’s estimated 300,000 Buddhist women. Because Buddhist institutions in Asian countries typically function independently and there is no central authority to oversee them or create policies, Sakyadhita’s …
Sexual Identity Construction Among Lesbian, Bisexual And Unlabeled Women, Kelly Brooks
Sexual Identity Construction Among Lesbian, Bisexual And Unlabeled Women, Kelly Brooks
Open Access Dissertations
Current research and theory regarding women's experience of sexuality depict more flexibility and variability in sexual identity development and self-labeling than generally accounted for in traditional sexual identity models. The present study examined lesbian and bisexual women's use of sexual identity labels, attitudes about sexual fluidity and self-labeling, and patterns associated with sexual identity processes. Two hundred nineteen women with same-sex attractions or experiences participated in the study, completing an anonymous online survey. The majority of participants (85.4%) identified as White, with ages ranging from 18 to 69. One hundred eighteen women identified as lesbian, 59 as bisexual, 5 as …

The Incorporation Of Communicative Language Teaching Into The Elaboration Of Interactive Software For Esl/Efl Learning, Vladia Borges
Open Access Dissertations
This study investigated the extent to which ESL/EFL software programs currently available on the market develop language skills according to the principles of Communicative Teaching and an interactive approach to computer use for language learning. A software evaluation instrument was developed and validated. The validated instrument was used to evaluate fifteen ESL/EFL software programs currently available on the market for the technological, pedagogical and individualization features that would account for the incorporation of Communicative Language Teaching principles and an interactive approach to computer use in language teaching. Results indicated that only three programs incorporated more than seventy-five percent of the …
The Genres Of Tutor Training: Searching For Reflective Practice, Elaine Hays
The Genres Of Tutor Training: Searching For Reflective Practice, Elaine Hays
Open Access Dissertations
As those involved in writing center work acknowledge, tutor training, whether informal or formal, is at the center of effective one-on-one instruction. The tutor training manual has become a popular tool for tutor education, but not always deemed useful. Likewise, the activities called "tutor training," vary with institutional context and, of course, budget and time. Still, from the onset of peer tutor training and collaborative learning, the intellectual development of the tutor was deemed as significant, if not more so, than assuring that the tutors knew what to do, or not do, during a tutoring session. Drawing on a lineage …

The Family As A Context For Religious And Spiritual Development In Children And Youth, Chris J. Boyatzis, David C. Dollahite, Loren D. Marks
Faculty Publications
Our chapter addresses how the family promotes or hinders transcendence of the self in children, that is, how the family is a context in which spiritual development occurs. Due to space limitations, our emphasis is on socialization and interaction processes within the family and not on other issues such as psychodynamic processes (e.g., Rizzuto, 1979) or faith development (e.g., Fowler, 1981). There are many motivations to explore family socialization of religious and spiritual development. One, family spirituality and religiosity are linked with many desirable outcomes and inversely with negative outcomes in children and youth. (Other chapters in this volume examine …

Unifying Language Modeling Capabilities For Flexible Interaction, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Rebecca Diane Madsen

Dialogue processing has taken several different forms in recent years; in this paper we address a cognitive modeling approach to the problem. We begin by sketching some of our work in this area and how it derives from prior research in cognition, modeling, natural language processing, and discourse recipe compilation. We then note that, whereas the complexities of natural language— especially spoken language—have been primarily addressed by technologies that target lower-level linguistic processing, higherlevel processing has been less well studied. We introduce our approach, which is to use an agent-based cognitive modeling architecture for dialogue processing. We mention some of …

"Mirror Worlds": Transpacific Inspiration And Mimetic Rivalry In American And East Asian Literature, 1945-2005., Matthew J. Packer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
One conspicuous trend during the world economy's shift to the Pacific Rim in the late twentieth century has been the increased reciprocal inspiration and mimetic rivalry between American and East Asian cultures. For much of the past century, for example, the Japanese have been stereotyped as cultural copycats, when transpacific imitating actually has been mutual: as East Asians have looked to the West for models of development and the imagination, so have Americans looked to the Far East---as even representing the future, according to novelist William Gibson. Americans have drawn inspiration from Eastern aesthetics, while East Asians have copied Western …

"If The Train Should Jump The Track.. .": Divergent Interpretations Of State And Federal Employment Discrimination Statutes, Alex B. Long
Georgia Law Review
As interpretational issues surrounding federal employment discrimination statutes have become more complex and controversial, there have arisen more opportunities for parallel state anti-discrimination law to jump the track" and take alternative courses. Not surprisingly, when dealing with their own parallel state statutes, a number of state appellate courts in recent years have chosen this course of action. Even where state and federal employment discrimination have not yet taken different paths, the potential for such divergent interpretations of state and federal anti-discrimination law has increased in recent years to the point where we may enter an era not unlike that of …
Constitutional Norms In A State Of Permanent Emergency, Sanford Levinson
Constitutional Norms In A State Of Permanent Emergency, Sanford Levinson
Georgia Law Review
Perhaps the most important constitutional issue of our time involves claims by the President to exercise power sufficient to confront ostensible 'emergencies" faced by the United States. One question is whether the Constitution grants the President sufficient powers. If not, are presidents justified in going 'beyond the Constitution"in order to do what they believe necessary in the given context? Professor Levinson demonstrates that debates about "emergency powers" have been a feature of our political system almost from its beginning. Many of those deemed our "greatest" presidents-Jefferson, Lincoln, and Franklin Roosevelt-have acted in questionable ways with regard to what might legitimately …

Towards New Possibilities In Esl Instruction: A Phenomenological Investigation Of English As A Second Language (Esl) Students' Perceptions Of Their Experience In An Intensive English Program (Iep)., Weena Isabelle Gaulin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Conducted in the Fall 2005, this study examined the experience English as a Second Language (ESL) students had while studying in an intensive English program (IEP) hosted at a four-year college. More specifically, the research premise was that phenomenology, for its emphasis on making essential meaning out of lived experience, could serve as a theoretical framework from which to investigate how the students constructed and perceived their experience, and, in the end, inform ESL instructional, curricular, and theoretical practices in a fresh, new way. The research employed qualitative data collection methods, including interviews, artifacts collection, class observations, and journaling on …

Surrendered Resistance: Playing Dead In American Autobiographical Writing, 1840-1933., Georgia R. Kreiger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation focuses on the use of death as a metaphor for lived experiences in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American autobiographical writing. Adopting Paul de Man’s definition of autobiography as a figure of reading rather than a genre or mode, the study analyzes autobiographical death acts in a variety of writings, including political discourse, fiction, and poetry. The writers discussed stage deaths-of-the-self to facilitate descriptions of traumatic events that might otherwise defy verbal expression. They “play dead†figuratively in their texts, similarly to the way one might play dead literally as a survival strategy in the presence of an animal …
