Discourse On Diversity: A Qualitative Study Of A College Communication Course In Multiculturalism, Mary V. Gormley Jan 2006

Discourse On Diversity: A Qualitative Study Of A College Communication Course In Multiculturalism, Mary V. Gormley

Open Access Dissertations

The result of a semester long participant-observation study of an upper level Communication Studies course on multiculturalism, this dissertation investigates the efforts that students undertake with regard to multiculturalism, collaboration, and social change. Critical multiculturalism, like other forms of multiculturalism, encourages a pluralist perspective and acceptance of diversity, but it also looks at the social structures that underlie difference, at the intersections of differences, and at issues of privilege, power, oppression and social justice. It focuses not on difference as essentialist but as constructed, and it seeks to create and/or recognize opportunities to transform power relations. Similarly, cultural geography and …

English Adjective Comparison And Analogy, Dirk Elzinga Jan 2006

English Adjective Comparison And Analogy, Dirk Elzinga

Faculty Publications

There are two strategies for forming the comparative degree of adjectives in English; a synthetic strategy which suffixes -er to the adjective stem, and an analytical strategy which uses more in composition with the adjective. Many analyses of the choice between analytical and synthetic comparison have been proposed, but all face difficulties. In this paper I show that analogy can not only account for the distribution of analytical and synthetic comparison as well as traditional rule-based approaches, but can also provide a psychologically plausible model for the choice which speakers make.

Traits Of Writing, Traits Of Art, Michelle Ciancarelli Becker Jan 2006

Traits Of Writing, Traits Of Art, Michelle Ciancarelli Becker

Theses and Dissertations

A study was conducted of Introductory Art students to find if the six traits of writing as written by Spandel/Stiggins (1997) would have influence over a narrative painting when combined with the six traits of painting. Inconclusive findings were reported. Data difference between the treated and untreated class was less than one point. More research needs to be conducted to study transfer of knowledge from verbal to visual as well as from one curriculum to another with both curriculums teaching same material.

The uses of Autonomous Mobile robots range from the teleoperated Sojourner on the Mars Pathfinder mission to cleaning robots in the Paris Metro. They have overtaken tasks which are too difficult or dangerous to perform or require the repetition of the same procedure over and over again and can become dull for a human to perform. The objective of this thesis is to develop and implement a multilayered fuzzy controller on an FPGA for the navigational control of an autonomous mobile robot (AMR). The navigational algorithm assists the robot in navigating through complex environments of passages and hallways. The FPGA …

A Computational Analysis Of Navajo Verb Stems, David Eddington, Jordan Lachler Jan 2006

A Computational Analysis Of Navajo Verb Stems, David Eddington, Jordan Lachler

Faculty Publications

One of the principal goals of linguistics is to find, classify, and describe relationships between words. Many formal mechanisms such as rules and constraints have been devised in order to show systematic relationships. Inflectional paradigms are a crucial component of a linguistic analysis that has applications for pedagogical grammars. For example, over the past 20 years there have been numerous Navajo textbooks produced that are aimed at beginning learners of the language. These include works such as Diné Bizaad Bóhoo'aah (Navajo Language Institute 1986), Diné Bizaad: Speak, Read, Write Navajo (Goossen 1995), and The Navajo Verb: A Grammar for Students …

Fuzzy-Neural Cost Estimation For Engine Tests, Edit J. Kaminsky, Holly Danker-Mcdermott, Freddie Douglas Jan 2006

Fuzzy-Neural Cost Estimation For Engine Tests, Edit J. Kaminsky, Holly Danker-Mcdermott, Freddie Douglas

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

This chapter discusses artificial computational intelligence methods as applied to cost prediction. We present the development of a suite of hybrid fuzzy-neural systems for predicting the cost of performing engine tests at NASA’s Stennis Space Center testing facilities. The system is composed of several adaptive network-based fuzzy inference systems (ANFIS), with or without neural subsystems. The output produced by each system in the suite is a rough order of magnitude (ROM) cost estimate for performing the engine test. Basic systems predict cost based solely on raw test data, whereas others use preprocessing of these data, such as principal components and …

Semiotic Modeling: Relevance To Trumpet Performance And Musical Interpretation Using Paul Hindemith's Sonata For Trumpet And Piano, Craig David Heinzen

LSU Major Papers

This paper is about the use of semiotics for the purpose of improving technical efficiency and musical interpretation in brass performance. Semiotics is the study of signs. The field is rooted in linguistics and logic, but has widened its influences to musicology and music theory in the last several decades. This paper constructs a model which simplifies music performance. The model has two components that address physical demands and musical analysis. The first component is a mathematically-based visual representation of the air stream used in brass performance. The second component of the model uses a reductive analysis. This analysis is …

As Soft As Tofu: Consumer Product Defamation On The Chinese Internet, Elizabeth Spahn Jan 2006

As Soft As Tofu: Consumer Product Defamation On The Chinese Internet, Elizabeth Spahn

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Article examines the most notorious Chinese internet defamation case, Wang Hong v. Maxstation, which awarded substantial damages against an individual consumer as well as two online magazines for criticizing a laptop product on the internet. The case created a widespread political controversy on the internet in China, highlighting an underlying tension in the current policies of the Chinese government, which promotes a more open market economy while maintaining tight censorship over public speech. The case developed landmark legal doctrine in China, extending judge made defamation law while ignoring the Chinese consumer protection statute. Extending defamation doctrine to include factual …

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

An Albanian social movement called Mjaft ! serves as a synecdoche for wider trends unfolding in Southeast Europe, where student, driven public deliberation is enlivening the political landscape not only in Albania, but also in Bulgaria, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Romania. What do these initiatives suggest about the political dynamics of linkages formed between academic debating groups and civil society organizations? Can public debate democratically energize South, east European citizenries? What general insight does this case study reveal about argumentation as applied critical practice? This paper explores these questions by drawing from collaborative research conducted by the authors under …

Liberty, Gender, And The Family, Jennifer Mckitrick Jan 2006

Liberty, Gender, And The Family, Jennifer Mckitrick

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

DISCUSSIONS OF JUSTICE within the classical liberal, libertarian tradition have been universalist. They have aspired to apply to any human community, whatever the makeup of its membership. Certainly some feminists have taken issue with this, arguing that the classical liberal, libertarian understanding of justice fails to address the concerns of women, indeed, does women an injustice. Among these we find Susan Moller Okin, and it will be my task in this essay to explore whether Okin's criticism is well founded. Susan Moller Okin's justice, Gender, and the Family is a landmark feminist discussion of distributive justice that raises issues no …

Differentiating Phonotactic Probability And Neighborhood Density In Adult Word Learning, Holly L. Storkel, Jonna Armbrüster, Tiffany Hogan

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to differentiate effects of phonotactic probability, the likelihood of occurrence of a sound sequence, and neighborhood density, the number of words that sound similar to a given word, on adult word learning. A second purpose was to determine what aspect of word learning (viz., triggering learning, formation of an initial representation, or integration with existing representations) was influenced by each variable.
Method: Thirty-two adults were exposed to 16 nonwords paired with novel objects in a story context. The nonwords orthogonally varied in phonotactic probability and neighborhood density. Learning was measured following 1, 4, …

A Fast Algorithm For Data Mining, Aarathi Raghu Jan 2006

A Fast Algorithm For Data Mining, Aarathi Raghu

Master's Projects

In the past few years, there has been a keen interest in mining frequent itemsets in large data repositories. Frequent itemsets correspond to the set of items that occur frequently in transactions in a database. Several novel algorithms have been developed recently to mine closed frequent itemsets - these itemsets are a subset of the frequent itemsets. These algorithms are of practical value: they can be applied to real-world applications to extract patterns of interest in data repositories. However, prior to using an algorithm in practice, it is necessary to know its performance as well implementation issues. In this project, …

Performance, Property, And The Slashing Of Gender In Fan Fiction , Sonia K. Katyal Jan 2006

Performance, Property, And The Slashing Of Gender In Fan Fiction , Sonia K. Katyal

Faculty Scholarship

Today, it is no secret that the regime of copyright law, once an often-overlooked footnote to our legal system of property, now occupies a central position in modern debates surrounding the relationship between freedom of expression, language, and ownership. Curiously, however, while contemporary scholarship on copyright now embraces a wide range of political and economic approaches, it has often failed to consider how intellectual property law - as it is owned, constituted, created, and enforced - both benefits and disadvantages segments of the population in divergent ways. This absence is both vexing and fascinating. While issues of distributive justice have …

A Christian Response To Islam: Is Islam A Peaceful Religion?, Steven E. Tsoukalas Jan 2006

A Christian Response To Islam: Is Islam A Peaceful Religion?, Steven E. Tsoukalas

The Asbury Journal

The following is a lecture delivered on 6 October 2005 as part of the Theta Phi Lecture Series at Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore, Kentucky As a Christian response to Islam, it covers several topics in relatively brief fashion. In the evangelistic encounter, the goal of which is a holistic encounter, the Christian must keep in mind the social-religious dynamics ofMuslims and incorporate this knowledge into a missiologically healthy approach that is built on a sound epistemological foundation. In short, for both a Christian response to Islam and evangelism of Muslims, Christians must possess a solid epistemology as foundational to "a …

The Totality Of The Circumstances Of The Debtor's Financial Situation In A Post-Means Test World: Trying To Bridge The Wedoff/Culhane & White Divide, John A. E. Pottow Jan 2006

The Totality Of The Circumstances Of The Debtor's Financial Situation In A Post-Means Test World: Trying To Bridge The Wedoff/Culhane & White Divide, John A. E. Pottow

Articles

Bankruptcy Judge Eugene Wedoff and Creighton Law School professors Marianne Culhane and Michaela White engage in a spirited debate over a series of law review articles about the proper scope of motions to dismiss a debtor's petition under section 707(b) of the freshly revised Bankruptcy Code. It is an interesting and provocative dialogue, with both sides advancing their respective positions persuasively. As a result, I find myself in the unfortunate position of wanting to agree with both. Since that is impossible, however, this brief article is my attempt to find a middle ground between their two positions. It does so …

Effects Of Teaching In English At Swedish Universities, Ingrid Johansson, Bosse Jonsson Jan 2006

Effects Of Teaching In English At Swedish Universities, Ingrid Johansson, Bosse Jonsson

EDU-COM International Conference

English plays an increasingly important role at Swedish universities but not much is known about its effects on the quality of teaching and learning. Therefore, a large research project which is collaborative and interdisciplinary, crossing language studies in humanities with education, is being planned. One of several aims of the project is to study the consequences of teaching in English on learning and study achievements. A few pre-studies have been carried out in order to develop more detailed research questions. Two of the pre-studies will be presented in this paper. In one of them, ten university teachers with Swedish as …

More than eighty-five percent of international students in New Zealand are Asian in origin. The level of satisfaction of Asian international students with their learning experiences in New Zealand has been of enormous concern for the New Zealand export education industry. The results of this current research, based on a qualitative research approach conducted at a New Zealand tertiary institution, provide a critical summary of some important and yet challenging issues in teaching Asian students. This study found that Asian students were overall satisfied with their learning experiences at the university in terms of educational quality and programme offering. Asian …

The Integration Of Professional Communication Skills Into Engineering Education, Dorthy Missingham Jan 2006

The Integration Of Professional Communication Skills Into Engineering Education, Dorthy Missingham

EDU-COM International Conference

Conventional Engineering curriculum is strongly focused on the development in students of technical knowledge and skills. However, in recent years, employers have increasingly acknowledged that this traditional preparation of Engineering students‘ is inadequate, as graduates lack the wide range of written and spoken communication skills required to engage with members of other professional groups and with the broader community. Recognition of the important role that communicative competence plays in professional success within the engineering industry has, as a result, led to a number of tertiary institutions developing curricula to address these needs. This paper presents a successful integrative Engineering Communication …
