A Framework For Schema-Driven Relationship Discovery From Unstructured Text, Cartic Ramakrishnan, Krzysztof Kochut, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

We address the issue of extracting implicit and explicit relationships between entities in biomedical text. We argue that entities seldom occur in text in their simple form and that relationships in text relate the modified, complex forms of entities with each other. We present a rule-based method for (1) extraction of such complex entities and (2) relationships between them and (3) the conversion of such relationships into RDF. Furthermore, we present results that clearly demonstrate the utility of the generated RDF in discovering knowledge from text corpora by means of locating paths composed of the extracted relationships.

Orchard Words, Jeremiah Farrell

Word Ways

The orchard problem, also known as the three-planting problem in the literature, is to plant n trees so that there will be r straight rows with k trees in each row. The maximum r for various k is unknown except for certain small cases of n and k. We have constructed examples of known maximums using words which we call Orchard Words.

All-Diagonal 5-Squares With Simpler Words, Max Gutmann Nov 2006

All-Diagonal 5-Squares With Simpler Words, Max Gutmann

Word Ways

It may seem that a 5-square could contain nothing but familiar words, but these 5-squares have eight words which have to fit, of which at least one must be a reversible word, and at least one a palindrome. In the case of six-squares, there was just one square with as many as 7 words (two less than the maximum) among the most used 87,000 words: in the case of five-squares, 3 squares had all 8 words in the top 87,000 (and 66 squares had just 7 words).

The Anchor, Volume 120.08: November 1, 2006, Hope College

The Anchor: 2006

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Learn To Write “Like The Man On The Six O’Clock News”, K.K. Duvivier

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Because your writing involves words, it might seem difficult to make your writing "transparent." However, speaking involves words too, and broadcasters employ several techniques to make their words transparent. Consequently, legal writers can look for guidance from the men and women "on the six o'clock news."

The Research Exhibition: Context, Interpretation, And Knowledge Creation, K. Niedderer, M. A. R. Biggs, M. Ferris

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In this paper, we investigate the problem of the nature, role and purpose of the research exhibition. The problem arises from the desire of practitioner-researchers to use the exhibition as a research tool. However, at present it is not clear whether, and in which way, the research exhibition is different from an ordinary exhibition, nor what its particular contribution to research might be. We investigate the problem of the research exhibition in relation to the conventional art/design exhibition as a familiar medium of communication in art & design. We compare the aims of research and practice, and we analyse how …

Objectives. We compared voluntary participation and comprehension of informed consent among individuals of African ancestry enrolled in similarly designed genetic studies of hypertension in the United States and Nigeria. Methods. Survey questionnaires were used to evaluate factors associated with voluntariness (the number of people volunteering) and understanding of the study's genetic purpose. A total of 655 individuals (United States: 348; Nigeria: 307) were interviewed after participation in the genetic studies. Results. Most US respondents (99%), compared with 72% of Nigerian respondents, reported being told the study purpose. Fewer than half of the respondents at both sites reported that the study …

English Language Learners And Technology: Applying Universal Design For Learning And The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol In The Evaluation Of Literacy Support Software, Susan M. Connolly

All Graduate Projects

The population of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students in U.S. schools has been steadily increasing. These students do not experience equal educational opportunity in U.S. secondary schools. CLD students need to develop English literacy as well as content knowledge to attain equal educational opportunity. Teachers of CLD students need techniques and tools which support CLD students in mastering the content expected of secondary school students while acquiring English literacy. The criteria for effective lesson design and delivery inherent in the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) and the criteria for designing curriculum without barriers to access inherent in Universal Design …

Totality Of The Circumstances Of The Debtor's Financial Situation In Post-Means Test World: Trying To Bridge The Wedoff/Culhane & White Divide, The, John A. E. Pottow

Missouri Law Review

Bankruptcy Judge Eugene Wedoff and Creighton Law School professors Marianne Culhane and Michaela White engage in a spirited debate over a series of law review articles about the proper scope of motions to dismiss a debtor's petition under section 707(b) of the freshly revised Bankruptcy Code. It is an interesting and provocative dialogue, with both sides advancing their respective positions persuasively. As a result, I find myself in the unfortunate position of wanting to agree with both. Since that is impossible, however, this brief article is my attempt to find a middle ground between their two positions. It does so …

Assimilation And Contrast Effects In Cultural Frame Switching: Bicultural Identity Integration And Valence Of Cultural Cues, Chi-Ying Cheng, Fiona Lee, Veronica Benet-Martinez Nov 2006

Assimilation And Contrast Effects In Cultural Frame Switching: Bicultural Identity Integration And Valence Of Cultural Cues, Chi-Ying Cheng, Fiona Lee, Veronica Benet-Martinez

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This study examines how the valence of cultural cues in the environment moderates the way biculturals shift between multiple cultural identities. The authors found that when exposed to positive cultural cues, biculturals who perceive their cultural identities as compatible (high bicultural identity integration, or high BII) respond in culturally congruent ways, whereas biculturals who perceive their cultural identities as conflicting (low BII) respond in culturally incongruent ways. The opposite was true for negative cultural cues. These results show that both high and low BIIs can exhibit culturally congruent or incongruent behaviors, and have implications for understanding situations where high and …

Reading Science Fiction Novels As An Architectural Research Method: The Case Study Of J. G. Ballard’S High Rise, Zeynep Tuna Ultav

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The aim of this paper is to suggest a new approach in producing architectural knowledge through the realm of discourse by systematizing the social and spatial clues within science fiction literature. In this sense, the departure point is the notion of interdisciplinarity, which expresses the relationship of modern research methods with several other disciplines. Considering the potential of interdisciplinary aspect of architecture, the scope of this paper is several parallel aspects between architectural discourse and the spatiality of literature proposed through the case study of J. G. Ballard’s novel High Rise. In this sense, an architectural research on the phenomenon …

A Guide To Methods For Small And Medium Sized Enterprises (Smes) Designing For New Markets, Based On Cultural Research Experiences, M. Haarakoski, M.E. Johansson, J. Lundberg

DRS Biennial Conference Series

One factor determining an industrially produced product’s success is how well it complies with customer needs. When small and medium size enterprises (SME) launch products onto new foreign markets, it is important to conduct cultural research to take customer design preferences in to consideration. This study, based on experiences from field studies in three countries, the USA, South Korea and Germany, can offer the SME´s designer with guidance of how to collect information about cultural design preferences in practice. The aim is to show the SME how to conduct design studies by themselves and what the benefits are of doing …

Studying Design Engineers Use Of Information Systems: Which Variables To Control For?, J. Restrepo

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Studying information usage by design engineers involves considering technical, social, cognitive and volitional factors. This makes it challenging, especially for researchers without a cognitive psychology background. This paper presents a summary of key findings in researching information use and processing in design, discusses important issues on the selection of a research strategy and sums up the important variables that need to be controlled for.

A Theory Of Modal Thinking In Design, C. H. Burnette Nov 2006

A Theory Of Modal Thinking In Design, C. H. Burnette

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper outlines a theory of design thinking that posits modes of thought that collaborate to achieve intentional goals regarding problematic situations. The intent is to provide a model for design thinking that can be computationally supported and applied in practice and to provide an operational basis for research on the use of each mode during design. The modes of thought are described and outlined; concepts of intentional frame and sub-modes are introduced; an example of modal thinking in design is presented, and a computational structure to model and support modal thinking is suggested.

Designing Engineering Education; Development Of Design Education Model For Engineers, Jihoon Kim, Myung-Suk Kim Nov 2006

Designing Engineering Education; Development Of Design Education Model For Engineers, Jihoon Kim, Myung-Suk Kim

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This research focuses on development of model used in teaching ‘Design Thinking’ to students majoring in engineering with emphasis on creative ideation and expression, and its application examples. Following the Second World War, educational circles in the area of engineering, due to excessive influence of Engineering Science, have come to concentrate relatively more on analysis of phenomenon and theoretical research rather than traditional format of engineering education, which places importance on visual thinking and actual experience, in development of curriculum. This research presents the process of development of new educational model in order to introduce core educational program of design …
