Predicting Domain Specific Entities With Limited Background Knowledge, Christopher Thomas, Amit P. Sheth
Kno.e.sis Publications
This paper proposes a framework for automatic recognition of domain-specific entities from text, given limited background knowledge, e.g. in form of an ontology. The algorithm exploits several lightweight natural language processing techniques, such as tokenization and stemming, as well as statistical techniques, such as singular value decomposition (SVD) to suggest domain relatedness of unknown entities.

Classifying Short Duration Voltage Disturbances Using Fuzzy Expert System, G.A. Mahdiraji, A. Mohamed
Classifying Short Duration Voltage Disturbances Using Fuzzy Expert System, G.A. Mahdiraji, A. Mohamed
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
In this paper, fuzzy logic is applied for identifying and classifying the short duration voltage variations of 8, 32 and 128 cycles waveforms. A program is written in Matlab to determine the parameters such as duration, maximum and minimum root mean square voltages of a disturbance by using the fast Fourier transform analysis. Based on these parameters, a fuzzy inference system has been developed with five fuzzy inputs, three fuzzy outputs and 139 fuzzy rules. The inputs are the maximum and minimum voltage magnitudes in per unit and disturbance duration in seconds. On the other hand, the outputs are namely …
Developing An Intelligent System To Acquire Meeting Knowledge In Problem-Based Learning Environments, A. Chiang, M.S. Baba
Developing An Intelligent System To Acquire Meeting Knowledge In Problem-Based Learning Environments, A. Chiang, M.S. Baba
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
MALESAbrain1-3 is an intelligent algorithm which originally is designed for problem-based learning (PBL) environment. Similarly, the algorithm proposed in MALESAbrain can, be used to deal, the problem of conducting a meeting among learners to solve problems. This project adapts the original MALESAbrain definitions and algorithm to create an intelligent learning tool; then, testing the tool in a students' meeting to discuss "To build up programming skills for computer science students, do you agree JAVA is a proper language in the first year foundation, course for computer science students"? Consequently; this paper concludes that MALESAbrain is a new methodology for meeting, …

Multiple Intelligences And Academic Performance Among Malaysian Undergraduate Dental Students, R. Ahmad, N.H. Abu Kasim, A.K. Palaniappan
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Objectives: To identify the nature of multiple intelligences among dental students and investigate the relationship between these intelligences and performance in the various skill areas of dentistry. Methods: Sixty-one final year dental students at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya in Malaysia were administered a Multiple Intelligence Inventory (MII), David Larear, 1991) after their final written examinations. MII comprised 80 4-point likert items assessing eight types of multiple intelligences: Verbal/Linguistic, Visual Spatial, Logical Mathematical, Musical Rhythmic, Intra Personal, Body Kinesthetic, Inter Personal and Naturalist. These intelligences were correlated with six academic performance scores: Amalgam Class II, Composite, Crown & …

Robert Alexy, Radbruch's Formula, And The Nature Of Legal Theory, Brian H. Bix
Robert Alexy, Radbruch's Formula, And The Nature Of Legal Theory, Brian H. Bix
Articles
Gustav Radbruch is well known for a formula that addresses the conflict of positive law and justice, a formula discussed in the context of the consideration of Nazi laws by the courts in the post-War German Federal Republic, and East German laws in the post-unification German courts. More recently, Robert Alexy has defended a version of Radbruch's formula, offering arguments for it that are different from and more sophisticated than those that were adduced by Radbruch himself. Alexy also placed Radbruch's formula within a larger context of conceptual analysis and theories about the nature of law. Both Radbruch and Alexy …
Listening To Student Voices: Fifth Graders' Perceptions Of Their Mathematics Learning Within The Context Of A Mathematics Reform, Elizabeth Hoffman
Listening To Student Voices: Fifth Graders' Perceptions Of Their Mathematics Learning Within The Context Of A Mathematics Reform, Elizabeth Hoffman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study explored fifth graders' perceptions of their mathematics learning within the context of a reform effort. Students' voices are the focus of this study due to the paucity of literature on student learning from the students' perspective (Erickson & Shultz, 1992), particularly the elementary student (Gentilucci, 2004). The participants of this study, who in the past have been given a variety of labels including "disadvantaged" or "at-risk," clearly articulated, even in nonstandard English, their perceptions of their mathematics learning. They passionately explained what helped them learn mathematics as well as what impeded their mathematics learning and were often …

Lawyers And The Building Of Communities, Roger Cotterrell
Lawyers And The Building Of Communities, Roger Cotterrell
National Law School of India Review
The intermingling of diverse cultures in India and the U.K. forms the backdrop of this special note, which deals with the relevance of culture to law. The recognition that culture plays a role in jurisprudence entails the recognition of differences, whereas in the present era of globalization, there is a movement towards homogenization. The note elaborates on how the role of the lawyer is also in a state of flux, in the midst of these changes. It deals with the way that the society views lawyers: as a lawyer as a technician serving individual clients, rather than a more esteemed …

Engaged Surrender In The Void: Post-Secularist "Human" Rights Discourse And Muslim Feminists [Sic], Emily A. Hartigan
Faculty Articles
Human rights discourse is inherently multicultural, and multicultural discourse is messy. The reality of discourse on the post-secular manifests in various books and websites. This manifestation has led to religion resurfacing in the public realm. At some level, the academy that poses as secular is a small and politically inconsequential voice in the national and international arena. Among the restrictions that secular discourse would attempt to dictate are those suggested in projects to re-enchant a world that has become spiritually, epistemically, politically, and perhaps humanly desiccated by the relegation of talk of the sacred to the private realm.
The purely …

Language Ideology And Racial Inequality: Competing Functions Of Spanish In An Anglo-Owned Mexican Restaurant, Rusty Barrett
Language Ideology And Racial Inequality: Competing Functions Of Spanish In An Anglo-Owned Mexican Restaurant, Rusty Barrett
Linguistics Faculty Publications
This article examines the influence of language ideology on interactions between English-speaking Anglo and monolingual Spanish-speaking employees in an Anglo-owned Mexican restaurant in Texas. In directives to Spanish-speaking employees, Anglo managers typically use English with elements of Mock Spanish. Because the Anglo managers fail to question whether their limited use of Spanish is sufficient for communicative success, Spanish speakers are almost always held responsible for incidents resulting from miscommunication. For Latino workers, Spanish provides an alternative linguistic market in which Spanish operates as a form of solidarity and resistance. The competing functions of Spanish serve to reinforce racial segregation and …

Personal Investments, Professional Gains: Strategies Of African American Women Teacher Educators, Adrienne D. Dixson, Jeannine E. Dingus
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
As African American mothers and teacher educators, the authors’ investment in teacher education is both personal and professional. The authors’ build upon these personal and professional investments in their teaching practices with primarily White pre-service teachers, in the hopes of better preparing them to teach African American children. This paper outlines pedagogical and curriculum strategies including reflective activities, the use of Black English Vernacular (BEV), and theoretical orientations. These strategies emphasize the a) political nature of teaching and the ways in which teacher positionality matters; b) importance of interpersonal relationships based on care, respect, and recognition of humanity; and, c) …
