Letter Lengths, Eric Iverson, A. Ross Eckler Feb 2006

Letter Lengths, Eric Iverson, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

Define the length of a letter as the sum of the lengths of its component straight lines and arcs (ignoring details such as serifs). Thus, the length of V is a little more than twice the length of I in most fonts, as O is greater than C, and B and R both greater than P. To fix ideas, we define the uppercase letters as a combination of straight lines and arcs of circles. Nearly all the letters can be embedded in rectangles 2 units by 1 unit in size, except for C, O, W and Q, all of which …

The Saturday 17 December 2005 World Wide Words (Issue 472), edited by Michael Quinion, exhibited the neologism SINISTROSPHERE: "This has started to appear online as a disparaging collective term for bloggers with left-wing political affiliations. Its opposite is the dextrosphere, a sweeter-sounding and must less sinister term. Both words are based on blogosphere, a collective term for the whole blogging environment."

Un-Truthful Words Feb 2006

Un-Truthful Words

Word Ways

Four is the definitive "truthful word" because it has four letters. "Unfour" is also truthful as it doesn't have four letters, but is untruthful as it's not a real word. Following an excursion into the un-section of the dictionary I found heaps of truthful and untruthful words, as well as some both truthful and untruthful--like unfour but real words. Here's a sampling, mostly of linguistic interest.

Etymology Of Sexual Terms, Leonard R. N. Ashley

Word Ways

Sex is often discussed in the allegedly more respectable terminology derived from classical languages, but sometimes Anglo-Saxon "four-letter words" are boldly employed. Seldom do we think of where these words came from. Can you state the terms derived as follows? Some are of debatable origin, but i do not include those (such as pimp) "of unknown origin". Extra points for virtue if any or all are unfamiliar to you!

Word Ways

If the Internet has done anything, it has caused a proliferation of "bookish" activity - dusting off, re-reading, swapping, borrowing, buying and selling. I, for one, has gotten caught up in this melee. My general modus operandi is to do garage sales and pass the wonderful bargains I find on to other anxious Internet book freaks.

"Did You Just Make That Up?" Puns In Everyday Conversation, Don Hauptman

Word Ways

The hallmark of the compleat punster is the ability to work puns into real-life situations - and to do so in an appropriate, natural and spontaneous way. Unless one is skilled at ad-libbing, it's best to have a repertoire of material to draw upon. Your objective is to be regarded as clever and witty rather than irritating. But opinions may differ.

Embodied Knowledge: Writing Researchers’ Bodies Into Qualitative Health Research, Laura L. Ellingson Feb 2006

Embodied Knowledge: Writing Researchers’ Bodies Into Qualitative Health Research, Laura L. Ellingson

Gender and Sexuality Studies

After more than a decade of postpositivist health care research and an increase in narrative writing practices, social scientific, qualitative health research remains largely disembodied. The erasure of researchers’ bodies from conventional accounts of research obscures the complexities of knowledge production and yields deceptively tidy accounts of research. Qualitative health research could benefit significantly from embodied writing that explores the discursive relationship between the body and the self and the semantic challenges of writing the body by incorporating bodily details and experiences into research accounts. Researchers can represent their bodies by incorporating autoethnographic narratives, drawing on all of their senses, …

Translated Opinions

Facts: In 2000 and 2001, while the petitioner was a member of the Fifteenth Knesset, he made two speeches. These speeches expressed support and approval for the Hezbollah organization, which in Israel has been declared a terrorist organization, and the petitioner was indicted for offences of supporting a terrorist organization.

In 2002, prior to the elections for the Sixteenth Knesset, applications were made to the Central Elections Committee to disqualify the candidacy of the petitioner in those elections, because of what he said in the two speeches. The Central Elections Committee disqualified the petitioner from standing for election, but this …

Restoration Constitutionalism In The South Pacific, Venkat Iyer Feb 2006

Restoration Constitutionalism In The South Pacific, Venkat Iyer

Washington International Law Journal

The dilemmas confronting societies which move from a period of authoritarian rule to liberal democracy have increasingly engaged the attention of academic experts and policy-makers alike. One issue which has received comparatively less notice, however, is the phenomenon of “restoration constitutionalism,” i.e. the process by which the transitional society is sought to be returned to the constitutional order that predated the authoritarian rule. Recent events in Fiji offer a good example of how this process works in practice. This article looks at the relationship between constitutionalism and transitional regimes, and argues that, where the “rupture” in a constitutional order is …

Legal Market Liberalization In South Korea: Preparations For Change, Hyung Tae Kim Feb 2006

Legal Market Liberalization In South Korea: Preparations For Change, Hyung Tae Kim

Washington International Law Journal

South Korea’s World Trade Organization membership requires the “Land of the Morning Calm” to liberalize its legal market. South Korea submitted its proposal for liberalization in the spring of 2003 and planned to begin opening its legal market in 2005. However, disagreements between South Korea and other World Trade Organization members over the scope of liberalization have led to a one-year negotiation period extension, pushing back the planned market opening to early 2007. The Korean Bar Association has strongly opposed liberalization, claiming that liberalization will lead to the foreign domination of South Korea’s legal market. On the other hand, most …

Problems To Discover And To Boost Mathematical Talent In Early Grades: A Challenging Situations Approach, Viktor Freiman Feb 2006

Problems To Discover And To Boost Mathematical Talent In Early Grades: A Challenging Situations Approach, Viktor Freiman

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Several studies of mathematical giftedness conducted in the past two decades reveal the importance of creation of learning and teaching environment favourable to the identification and nurturing mathematically talented students. Based on psychological, methodological and didactical models created by Krutetskii (1976), Shchedrovtiskii (1968), Brousseau (1997) and Sierpinska (1994), we have developed our challenging situation approach. During 7 years of field study in the elementary K-6 classroom, we collected sufficient amount of data that demonstrate how these challenging situations help to discover and to boost mathematical talent in very young children keeping and increasing their interest towards more advanced mathematics curriculum. …

An Economic Analysis Of State And Individual Responsibility Under International Law, Alan O. Sykes, Eric A. Posner Feb 2006

An Economic Analysis Of State And Individual Responsibility Under International Law, Alan O. Sykes, Eric A. Posner

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

The international law of state responsibility determines when states are liable for international law violations. States are generally liable when they have control over the actions of wrongdoers; thus, the actions of state officials can implicate state responsibility whereas the acts of private citizens usually do not. We argue that the rules of state responsibility have an economic logic similar to that of vicarious liability in domestic law: the law in both cases provides third parties with incentives to control the behavior of wrongdoers whom they can monitor and influence. We also discuss international legal remedies and individual liability under …

Ahead Of The Game: Middle And Upper Palaeolithic Hunting Behaviors In The Southern Caucasus, Daniel S. Adler, Guy Bar-Oz, Anna Belfer-Cohen, Ofer Bar-Yosef

Anthropology Articles

Over the past several decades a variety of models have been proposed to explain perceived behavioral and cognitive differences between Neanderthals and modern humans. A key element in many of these models and one often used as a proxy for behavioral “modernity” is the frequency and nature of hunting among Palaeolithic populations. Here new archaeological data from Ortvale Klde, a late Middle–early Upper Palaeolithic rockshelter in the Georgian Republic, are considered, and zooarchaeological methods are applied to the study of faunal acquisition patterns to test whether they changed significantly from the Middle to the Upper Palaeolithic. The analyses demonstrate that …

Nuclear Weapons And National Prestige, Robert J. Shiller Feb 2006

Nuclear Weapons And National Prestige, Robert J. Shiller

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Leaders and historians see prestige as important, but international relations theorists have neglected the concept, in part for lack of a clear definition. It is proposed that a party “holds prestige” when group members generally believe that the party has a certain desirable quality, and this situation gives the party perceived power in the group. The definition gains support from a survey of international affairs writings on the sources of prestige. Prestige is strategically important when a party wants support from others who would rather join the side that more of the others are joining. Some general ways of acquiring …
