Aids Prevention And The Right To Health Under International Law: Burma As The Hard Case, Rhianna M. Fronapfel Feb 2006

Aids Prevention And The Right To Health Under International Law: Burma As The Hard Case, Rhianna M. Fronapfel

Washington International Law Journal

Many commentators suggest that states have a human rights obligation to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS within their borders. Specifically, state HIV/AIDS prevention obligations are often premised on the “right to health” contained within many international human rights documents. Other approaches encourage states to implement AIDS prevention measures by emphasizing the detrimental effects of AIDS on economies and national and international security instead. Many commentators who adhere to the health-and-human-rights model, however, reject such other approaches as overly concerned with the interests of developed countries and lacking the ethical focus that underlies health and human rights. Implicit in such arguments …

Feral Pigs In Queensland - Distribution, Ecology And Impact Feb 2006

Feral Pigs In Queensland - Distribution, Ecology And Impact

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Domestic pigs (Sus scrofa) were introduced to Australia by early settlers. Subsequent accidental and deliberate releases resulted in the wild (feral) population establishing throughout Australia. Feral pigs damage crops, stock and property, spread weeds and transmit diseases such as Leptospirosis and Foot and Mouth. They also cause environmental damage, digging up large areas of native vegetation and spreading weeds.

Feral pigs are declared Class 2 pests under Land Protection (Pest and Stock Route Management) Act 2002. Declaration requires landholders to control declared pest on the land under their control. A local government may serve a notice …

Form Over Substance: The Inadequacy Of Informed Consent And Ethical Review For Thai Injection Drug Users Enrolled In Hiv Vaccine Trials, Joan M. Doherty Feb 2006

Form Over Substance: The Inadequacy Of Informed Consent And Ethical Review For Thai Injection Drug Users Enrolled In Hiv Vaccine Trials, Joan M. Doherty

Washington International Law Journal

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (“AIDS”) has emerged as a health issue of global significance, and clinical research on Human Immunodeficiency Virus (“HIV”) and AIDS has become increasingly international in scope. A clinical trial of a vaccine designed to prevent the spread of the HIV raises important legal and ethical questions because injection drug users who were believed to be unsuitable subjects for study in the United States were singled out for research in Thailand. The protections for human subjects must not be compromised when U.S. pharmaceutical companies conduct research abroad, particularly where clinical trials are conducted in vulnerable populations. U.S. …

Acute Bacterial Meningitis In Qatar, Mahmoud F. Elsaid, Amina A. Flamerzi, Mohammed S. Bessisso, Sittana S. Elshafie

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To study the changes in the epidemiology, clinical and bacteriological profiles of bacterial meningitis in the era of the Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)vaccine and pneumococcus resistance. METHODS: This is a retrospective study of children aged <12 years admitted to the Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar between January 1998 through December 2002 with positive cerebrospinal fluid culture. RESULTS: We described 64 patients with culture proven bacterial meningitis. In infants <3 months (n=29 [45%]), the most common organism was Group B Streptococcus (GBS) (20%). Children >3 months (n=35 [55%]); Hib (25%) and Streptococcus pneumoniae (STP) (20%) were the most common organisms before introduction of Hib vaccination. A significant drop of Hib infections were noticed after introduction of the vaccine. Fever, neck stiffness, seizure, vomiting, and bulging fontanel were the most frequent presenting features. Group B Streptococcus were sensitive to ampicillin and cefotaxime with no resistance detected. Forty percent …

Transcriptome Signature Of Virulent And Attenuated Pseudorabies Virus-Infected Rodent Brain, Christina Paulus, Patricia J. Sollars, Gary E. Pickard, Lynn W. Enquist Feb 2006

Transcriptome Signature Of Virulent And Attenuated Pseudorabies Virus-Infected Rodent Brain, Christina Paulus, Patricia J. Sollars, Gary E. Pickard, Lynn W. Enquist

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Mammalian alphaherpesviruses normally establish latent infections in ganglia of the peripheral nervous system in their natural hosts. Occasionally, however, these viruses spread to the central nervous system (CNS), where they cause damaging, often fatal, infections. Attenuated alphaherpesvirus derivatives have been used extensively as neuronal circuit tracers in a variety of animal models. Their circuit-specific spread provides a unique paradigm to study the local and global CNS response to infection. Thus, we systematically analyzed the host gene expression profile after acute pseudorabies virus (PRV) infection of the CNS using Affymetrix GeneChip technology. Rats were injected intraocularly with one of three selected …

Selachohemecus Benzi N. Sp. (Digenea: Sanguinicolidae) From The Blacktip Shark Carcharhinus Limbatus (Carcharhinidae) In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Stephen A. Bullard, Robin M. Overstreet, John K. Carlson

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Selachohemecus benzi Bullard & Overstreet n. sp. infects the heart and kidney of the blacktip shark Carcharhinus limbatus in the northern Gulf of Mexico off Florida and Mississippi, USA. Specimens of S. olsoni Short, 1954, the only congener and only other named blood fluke reported from a chondrichthyan in the Gulf of Mexico, were collected from the heart of the Atlantic sharpnose shark Rhizoprionodon terraenovae from two new localities, Apalachicola Bay, Florida, and Mississippi Sound, Mississippi, USA. The new species differs from S. olsoni by having a larger body (1.4–3.8 mm long), robust tegumental body spines numbering 51–63 along each …

The Diabetic Foot. In The Arab World, Abdullah M. Al-Wahbi Feb 2006

The Diabetic Foot. In The Arab World, Abdullah M. Al-Wahbi

Saudi Medical Journal

The literature is replete with diabetic foot problems throughout the world, but few has been written about the problem in the Middle East and even in the Arab world. After reviewing these discussions, we realized that the magnitude of the problem is not yet appreciated for many reasons. In this paper, we explained why it is more prevalent, less managed and has been associated with worse health outcomes in diabetic patients in the Arab world. We believe that the leading problems are preventable, and this cancer can be controlled in a simple cost-effective way.
