A 5-Stage Cross-Cultural Reentry Training Model: Proactive Curriculum And Training Giude For Exchange Organization Representatives, Sponsor Teachers And Returning Student Sojourners, Stacey Anne Howell
All Graduate Projects
This project is the result of an exploration into the process and product of cross-cultural reentry; that is, reentry into one's country of origin following an extended stay in a host country. The history of reentry training programs in the United States was researched, the process of cross-cultural adjustment was explored, and research involving the identity development of adolescents and the effects of stress on adolescents and adolescent sojourners was reviewed. Following a review of the research in these areas, an extensive five-stage curriculum model for cross-cultural reentry training was designed. The curriculum model includes a complete training outline, a …

Larry Rivers And Frank O'Hara: Reframing Male Sexualities, Dong-Yeon Koh
Larry Rivers And Frank O'Hara: Reframing Male Sexualities, Dong-Yeon Koh
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In 1970, Sam Hunter complained that the distinctive persona of proto-Pop artist Larry Rivers had overshadowed his artistic achievement. "Too often he has been taken as an engaging public performer", wrote Hunter, claiming that some critics "make the mistake of confusing his irrepressible exhibitionism with an imagined artistic flaw of fitful or unsteady inspiration". 1 This dissertation presents an alternative proposition regarding the relationship between Rivers' artistic persona and art: that an examination of Rivers' numerous activities inside and outside the artistic arena, such as poetry, jazz, and media, is indeed useful for understanding his work. Particularly, Rivers' involvement with …

Our Ignorance About Intelligence, Richard A. Epstein
Our Ignorance About Intelligence, Richard A. Epstein
Faculty Articles
In a short introduction, I shall not even attempt to hint at my views on this cluster of issues, which are on most issues very much a work-in-progress. As a committed defender of limited government in the classical liberal tradition, there are many areas of human life in which I would like to keep the government at bay. I see little or no reason for state regulation of employment contracts for example, and I cautiously accept only limited forms of land planning. But neither of those strategies works here, for try as one might, intelligence is a legitimate government function—assuming …
The Constitution And Political Competition, Richard H. Pildes
The Constitution And Political Competition, Richard H. Pildes
Faculty Articles
Competitive elections are the minimal essential element of democratic systems. They promote broad public debate, stimulate voter participation, and are the central means by which voters hold officeholders accountable. Yet as is now widely recognized, such elections are in decline in the United States, due in part to the intentional and systematic creation of artificially safe election districts. This article provides a constitutional framework for responding to this problem. In recent years, the Supreme Court has more aggressively enforced constitutional limitations on the scope of Congress's enumerated powers. In the same way, the Court has begun to enforce limits on …
Provincial Anthropology, Circumlocution, And The Copious Use Of Everything, Laurie Kain Hart
Provincial Anthropology, Circumlocution, And The Copious Use Of Everything, Laurie Kain Hart
Anthropology Faculty Scholarship
Provincial towns are not miniature replicas of national metropolises but centers with their own trajectories of aesthetic and civic development. They operate in a regional context in relation both to the rural villages within their spheres of influence and to international cultural circuits. Inhabitants of peripheral towns in Greece negotiate the challenges of pluralism, modernization, and the hegemony of the nation state in their own social, political, and cultural idioms of accommodation and distancing. A close analysis of the modern history, city planning, and architecture of Florina in Western Greek Macedonia, particularly in the period between WWI and WWII, shows …
Component Processes In The Predictors Of Reading Achievement: Direct And Indirect Effects, Bryson Bresnahan
Component Processes In The Predictors Of Reading Achievement: Direct And Indirect Effects, Bryson Bresnahan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the relationships between the most reliable predictors of reading, possible factors of these predictors, and different aspects of reading achievement. Thirty six subjects were recruited from a reading clinic and administered measures of phonological awareness and rapid naming. They were also given measures of two constructs hypothesized to underlie these predictors, the constructs of working memory and processing speed. Each participant's sight word vocabulary, reading fluency, and reading comprehension were collected to represent reading achievement. Comprehension performance was not directly related to reading predictors but instead was indirectly influenced by sight vocabulary. Contrary to the presented hypothesis, …
Disenfranchising The Black Other: A Critique Of American Drug Laws, Heather Dorsey
Disenfranchising The Black Other: A Critique Of American Drug Laws, Heather Dorsey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Presently, approximately 4.7 million Americans are unable to vote, a population which is disproportionately black and stripped of their civic rights because of their status as present or former felons. I propose that unequal drug laws which provide different sentences for crack cocaine, used more often by poor blacks because of its cheapness and availability in poor neighborhoods, and powder cocaine, used more often by upper class whites, punish blacks for their status as Other. Disproportionately punishing them for a habit in which people of all races participate has created a class without the ability to participate in the system …

Through The Eyes Of A Renaissance Prophet: Fra Girolamo Savonaorla And The Compendium Of Revelation, David Fear
Through The Eyes Of A Renaissance Prophet: Fra Girolamo Savonaorla And The Compendium Of Revelation, David Fear
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis provides the historiographical background and historical context necessary to undertake an examination of Savonarola's Compendium of Revelations and evaluate it as a work of the Italian Renaissance. It conducts such an examination and reaches the conclusion that Savonarola should be used as an example of a figure who, like the age of the Renaissance itself, represented a significant break with the medieval world while still being influenced by it. His political, social, and religious views all show both the influence of the medieval world and the underpinnings of the modern. The analysis is influenced by intellectual, religious, and …

A Christian Response To Islam: Is Islam A Peaceful Religion?, Steven E. Tsoukalas
The Asbury Journal
The following is a lecture delivered on 6 October 2005 as part of the Theta Phi Lecture Series at Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore, Kentucky As a Christian response to Islam, it covers several topics in relatively brief fashion. In the evangelistic encounter, the goal of which is a holistic encounter, the Christian must keep in mind the social-religious dynamics ofMuslims and incorporate this knowledge into a missiologically healthy approach that is built on a sound epistemological foundation. In short, for both a Christian response to Islam and evangelism of Muslims, Christians must possess a solid epistemology as foundational to "a …

Popular Constitutionalism As Political Law, Mark V. Tushnet
Popular Constitutionalism As Political Law, Mark V. Tushnet
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This Article addresses some of the critical reviews of ‘The People Themselves’, focusing on how they respond to the proposition, which I believe to be correct and made in ‘The People Themselves’, that constitutional law is a distinctive or special kind of law. I call that kind of law political law. Both parts of the formulation are equally important. Constitutional law is law, what is sometimes described as "hard" law. As law, it sometimes induces decision-makers to make decisions that are inconsistent with their "pure" preferences, that is, those they would hold in the absence of law. My aim is …
Reconciling Holocaust Scholarship And Personal Data Protection: Facilitating Access To The International Tracing Service Archive, Collin Mcdonald
Reconciling Holocaust Scholarship And Personal Data Protection: Facilitating Access To The International Tracing Service Archive, Collin Mcdonald
Fordham International Law Journal
This Note examines whether amendment of the ITS charter is necessary to effectuate researcher access, or whether, as a matter of international law, in its capacity as an international organization (“IO”), the ITS can allow access without amendments. Addressing this question implicitly raises two collateral issues that inform the discussion. First, to what degree should an IO Member State's domestic legal framework dictate that State's position in a consensus-based IO decision-making process. Second, when changes in the global political context render an existing IO legal structure ill-suited to an IO's evolving mission, to what degree is it appropriate to re-interpret …

Media Use, Linguistic Preference And Social Capital In The Hispanic Community, Misti Mcdaniel
LSU Master's Theses
While considerable research had been devoted to the study of social capital, limited information is available assessing the connection between linguistic preference and social capital among ethnic groups. Research indicated the American Latino community exhibits levels of social capital similar to the greater United States populous. Latinos who preferred English-language media, however, exhibited higher levels of social capital than those who used Spanish-language media. Finally, Latinos who held a linguistic preference for English held higher levels of social capital than individuals who preferred Spanish.
A Delicate Dance: Autoethnography, Curriculum, And The Semblance Of Intimacy, Laura Marshall Jewett
A Delicate Dance: Autoethnography, Curriculum, And The Semblance Of Intimacy, Laura Marshall Jewett
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Have you ever had a dream that you shared an intimate moment—grew close—with someone who in your waking life you barely knew; or that you knew a language that outside of your dream you did not understand? Or if you are a teacher, have you ever dreamt that you connected with a student—actually taught them something? If upon waking you have felt the residual yet potent ephemeral as-ifness of such closeness, you have experienced what is the focus of this study: the semblance of intimacy. This dissertation, via autoethnography, couples experiences teaching multicultural education and learning to zydeco dance in …

The Other Side Of The Tracks: Railroads, Race, And The Performance Of Unity In Nineteenth-Century American Entertainment, Elissa Sartwell
The Other Side Of The Tracks: Railroads, Race, And The Performance Of Unity In Nineteenth-Century American Entertainment, Elissa Sartwell
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Nineteenth-century Americans took great pride in the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869. This pride was not solely grounded in the knowledge that a grand, technological feat had been accomplished. When placed in its historical context, the celebration surrounding the completion of the railroad suggests a clear and visible statement of unity following a bitter and divisive civil war. The transcontinental railroad of 1869 undeniably unified the States. But any railroad simultaneously unites and divides, for while the tracks serve to link distant locations, they also produce a literal and metaphorical division in the communities through which they …
Socrates As Citizen?: The Implications Of Socratic Eros For Contemporary Models Of Citizenship, Jeremy John Mhire
Socrates As Citizen?: The Implications Of Socratic Eros For Contemporary Models Of Citizenship, Jeremy John Mhire
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation evaluates the appropriateness of using Socrates as a model for contemporary citizenship. I examine the question of Socrates' civic character by inquiring about the relation of the philosopher (or political scientist) to the city (that is, to political life) without taking for granted that they share a common aim or purpose. Instead, I prepare the discussion with an examination of the treatment of Socrates by the comic poet Aristophanes in the Clouds. I suggest that Socrates' famed eros, his unwavering love of wisdom, was a problem, one that threatened the very foundations of political society. By conceiving of …
A Historical Examination Of The Tradition Of Experience In The Teaching Of Literature In English Education, Deborah Davis Reed
A Historical Examination Of The Tradition Of Experience In The Teaching Of Literature In English Education, Deborah Davis Reed
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
By examining major documents for tensions regarding the teaching of literature in the field of secondary English education, this dissertation addressed the following questions: (1) What assumptions about learning and knowledge helped to shape the field? (2) To what extent does the field demonstrate consistency or change in its discourse defined-positions? and (3) How might current conversations in the field fit within a larger historical, social, and political context, thus equipping English educators to better articulate and situate their own pedagogical beliefs? Stephen Toulmin’s (1958) model of an argument served as a means of analyzing the field’s ongoing conversation about …
The Scent Of A New World Novel: Translating The Olfactory Language Of Faulkner And García Márquez, Terri Smith Ruckel
The Scent Of A New World Novel: Translating The Olfactory Language Of Faulkner And García Márquez, Terri Smith Ruckel
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Both William Faulkner and Gabriel García Márquez introduce the olfactory as a focal element in their writing, producing works that challenge the singular primacy of sight as the unrivaled means by which the New World might be understood. As they translate experiences of the New World into language, both writers record the power of olfactory perception to reflect memory and history, to shape identity, to mark unmistakably certain crisis moments of ethical action, and to delineate a form of knowledge crucial to their New World poetics of the novel. Observing and analyzing the olfactory language particular to the cultural spaces …
Is Support For Strategic Flexibility, Environmental Dynamism, And Firm Performance, Michael J. Zhang
Is Support For Strategic Flexibility, Environmental Dynamism, And Firm Performance, Michael J. Zhang
WCBT Faculty Publications
Increasingly, strategic flexibility has been viewed as a critical organizational competency that enables firms to achieve and maintain competitive advantage and superior performance. In this study, the relationship between IS support for strategic flexibility and the bottom-line performance of firms is investigated, as well as the moderating effects of environmental dynamism on that relationship. Using both survey and archival data, IS support for strategic flexibility was positively associated with profitability and labor productivity only when there was a high degree of environmental changes and uncertainty.
