Texts And Contexts: International Sources And Universalistic Discourse In Australian Teacher Education 1900-1950, Malcolm Vick Jan 2006

Texts And Contexts: International Sources And Universalistic Discourse In Australian Teacher Education 1900-1950, Malcolm Vick

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Australia has a long history of what has been pilloried as ‘cultural cringe’, and of bemoaning its isolation from ‘overseas’ developments. In recent years, the valuing of ideas and practices from elsewhere has been transformed under the rubric of ‘world best practice’ within a global economy and culture, both in political discourse generally, and in a raft of reports on the need for reform of teacher education in particular (see Vick, 2006a). Here, I document overseas borrowings in the form of texts in teacher education during the first half of last century, focusing on teachers colleges in Sydney, Melbourne and …

The Modal Gap: The Objective Problem Of Lessing's Ditch(Es) And Kierkegaard's Subjective Reply, Matthew A. Benton Jan 2006

The Modal Gap: The Objective Problem Of Lessing's Ditch(Es) And Kierkegaard's Subjective Reply, Matthew A. Benton

SPU Works

This essay expands upon the suggestion that Lessing's infamous ‘ditch’ is actually three ditches: temporal, metaphysical, and existential gaps. It examines the complex problems these ditches raise, and then proposes that Kierkegaard's Fragments and Postscript exhibit a similar triadic organizational structure, which may signal a deliberate attempt to engage and respond to Lessing's three gaps. Viewing the Climacean project in this way offers an enhanced understanding of the intricacies of Lessing's rationalist approach to both religion and historical truth, and illuminates Climacus's subjective response to Lessing.

The Enlightenment And Its Effects On The Haitian Revolution Of 1789-1804, Rebekah Nicholson Jan 2006

The Enlightenment And Its Effects On The Haitian Revolution Of 1789-1804, Rebekah Nicholson

McNair Scholars Journal

Throughout history, revolutions have started because of new ideas that change thinking and disrupt the status quo. The Haitian Revolution of 1789-1804 is no exception. The Enlightenment ideas of equality for men and representative government were crucial to the insurrection. However, how did Enlightenment philosophy make its way to the Caribbean and influence the people to free themselves from their colonizer, France? One slave in particular was strongly influenced by Enlightenment ideas: Toussaint L’Ouverture, the leader of the revolution. Ultimately, the Enlightenment inspired a successful slave revolt in Haiti. While traditional scholarship has depicted the slaves in the revolt as …

Relative Abundance Of Exotic And Native Coccinellidae (Coleoptera) In Southeast Nebraska Alfalfa, James C. Kriz, Stephen D. Danielson, James R. Brandle, Erin E. Blankenship

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The seven-spotted lady beetle, Coccinella septempunctata L., and the multicolored Asian lady beetle, Harmonia axyridis Pallas, are exotic Coccinellidae (Coleoptera) that are regularly encountered in southeastern Nebraska. Harmonia axyridis, a native of eastern Asia, was first reported in an established population near Abita Springs, St. Tammay Parish, Louisiana, in 1988. It was hypothesized that the introduction was accidental through commerce in Louisiana and not from introduction for biological control. Coccinella septempunctata, a native of Eurasia, was introduced for biological control several times and at a variety of locations across North America during the last century. As is the case …

Nietzsche’S “Gay” Science, Babette Babich Jan 2006

Nietzsche’S “Gay” Science, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

Offers a reading of the allusion to the 'Provencal' in Nietzsche’s The Gay Science, including the troubadour’s art (or 'technic') of poetic song, an art at once secret, anonymous and thus nonsubjective, but also including logical disputation, for which it is the model, and comprising, perhaps above all, the important ideal of action (and pathos) at a distance: l’amour lointain. But beyond the Provençal character and atmosphere of the troubadour, Nietzsche’s conception of a joyful science, Nietzsche's 'gay' science also adumbrates a critique of science understood as the collective ideal of scholarship, and including classical philology as much as logic, …

Accounting Techniques In Korea: 18th Century Archival Samples From A Non-Profit Association In The Sinitic World, Seong Ho Jun, James B. Lewis Jan 2006

Accounting Techniques In Korea: 18th Century Archival Samples From A Non-Profit Association In The Sinitic World, Seong Ho Jun, James B. Lewis

Accounting Historians Journal

Little is known about pre-1900 East Asian accounting techniques. A double-entry method of accounting may date from the 11th century in Korea, but extant commercial ledgers are no older than 1854. However, extensive accounts of cooperative associations survive from the early 18th century. The Mun Clan Association accounts are examined to reveal their organizing principles and accuracy. The accounts demonstrate a highly accurate system that was intermediate between single-entry and double-entry accounting. While they are not from a commercial house, the accounts display sophisticated bookkeeping techniques designed to maximize rationality within a Confucian moral economy.

Auditor Switching And The Great Depression, Alan John Richardson Jan 2006

Auditor Switching And The Great Depression, Alan John Richardson

Accounting Historians Journal

The Guide du commerce occupies a distinctive place in the French-language literature on accounting. Passed over by most specialists in the history of maritime trade and the slave trade, the manual has never been the subject of a documented historical study. The apparent realism of the examples, the luxury of details and their precision, all bear witness to a deep concern to go beyond a simple apprenticeship in bookkeeping. Promoting itself essentially as un guide du commerce, the volume offers strategic examples for small local businesses, as well as for those engaged in international trade. Yet, the realism also demonstrated …

The "Great Experiment" And The Michigan State Normal School: An Institutional History Analysis, Ronald D. Flowers

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study examines the historic development of teacher training in the western world and the United States, focusing on the establishment and institutionalization of teacher preparation in the normal schools of the mid-nineteenth century. This study presents the institutional building blocks that formed the foundation of teacher preparation in America.

In addition, this study examines these building blocks as they became manifest in the establishment of the Michigan State Normal School from its founding in 1849 through its transition to a four-year college in 1900.

Journey Of Faith: From Jerusalem To The Promised Land, S. Kent Brown, Peter Johnson

Maxwell Institute Publications

The DVD documentary Journey of Faith (Maxwell Institute, 2006) continues in expanded form in this book, Journey of Faith: From Jerusalem to the Promised Land. The documentary was filmed in the Middle East at locations that scholars believe mark or approximate the route that took Lehi’s party across Arabia to reach the seaside location where they eventually embarked by ship to the New World. Like the DVD, the book will enrich one’s study of the opening chapters of the Book of Mormon.

Shakespeare And The Marginalized “Others”, Carole Levin Jan 2006

Shakespeare And The Marginalized “Others”, Carole Levin

Department of History: Faculty Publications

When we think of the London and England of Shakespeare and Elizabeth I, traditionally we have assumed a fairly homogeneous society. But more recently scholars have recognized that England, and especially the London of early modern England, was instead a truly heterogeneous place, as was the Edinburgh of early modern Scotland. In early modern British cities, there was a wide range of peoples of different statuses and backgrounds. This chapter discusses the actual lives of those somehow perceived as different, attitudes about them, and how these attitudes were reflected in the drama of the time, especially in the works of …

Baptismal Practice And Trinitarian Belief In Joseph Bingham's Origines Ecclesiasticae: A Study In The Historical And Theological Contexts Of Patristic Scholarship At The Close Of The Era Of Orthodoxy, Yudha Thianto Jan 2006

Baptismal Practice And Trinitarian Belief In Joseph Bingham's Origines Ecclesiasticae: A Study In The Historical And Theological Contexts Of Patristic Scholarship At The Close Of The Era Of Orthodoxy, Yudha Thianto

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

Joseph Bingham belonged to a group of late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century Anglican scholar-clergymen that endeavored to provide their contemporaries with a comprehensive picture of the practice and worship of the early church. Bingham's historical study is unique, since he presents the ancient church in a non-chronological method, but through a systematic and thematic investigation of the rites and ceremonies, together with other dynamic aspects of Christian antiquity. This dissertation proposes to situate Bingham in the context of the late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century English church, its scholarship, and its theological controversies. This understanding of Bingham will, in turn, reveal …

The Unknown Factor: Helping Students Understand Mendelian Genetics And The Nature Of Science, Chris Robinson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Teaching science concepts in the same chronological order that the knowledge was developed by the scientific community is an effective way of promoting understanding of the concept as well as a greater appreciation for scientific inquiry. This activity mentally engages students and provides them a sense of discovery that Gregor Mendel must have felt over 150 years ago when he came to understand inheritance. Finally, by putting Mendelian genetics into a historical perspective, students will gain a greater understanding of scientific processes and the history and nature of science. This activity promotes National Science Education Content Standards A, C, E …
