An Investigation Of Thundersnow And Deep Snow Accumulations, Christina Crowe, Patrick Market, Brian Pettergrew, Chris Melick, Josef Podzimek
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
A comparison of 30 years of hourly surface weather observations (1960-1991) from first-order stations and 24-hour snowfall data from climate network stations over the upper Midwestern United States reveals an indirect association between the relatively rare occurrence of thundersnow (< 1 event yr-1 in this dataset) and the accumulation of significant 24-hour snowfall (> 15 cm) in 19 of 22 cases identified. Although no direct relationship is found between the location of thundersnow and the deepest 24-hour snow totals, significant snow accumulations frequently occurred in proximity (< 1° latitude) to thundersnow events. the presence of thundersnow tended to indicate a parent extratropical cyclone capable of producing significant snowfall totals; should thundersnow be anticipated, the operational meteorologist can have much greater confidence in forecasting deeper snow totals. Modern Foraminiferal Bio-Facies Within A Transgressive Saline Influenced Deltaic Headland, South-Central Louisiana, Chandra Dreher
Modern Foraminiferal Bio-Facies Within A Transgressive Saline Influenced Deltaic Headland, South-Central Louisiana, Chandra Dreher
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Incorporating improved preparation techniques, modern taxonomy, and quantitative analysis of environmental variables known to influence marsh foraminifers in other coastal regions refined marsh foraminiferal biofacies of the Mississippi delta region. Elevation, pore water salinity, total carbon, and mean grain size were compared with foraminiferal distributions in a transgressive marsh system of the lower Lafourche headland of the south-central delta plain. Cluster analysis aided definition of two biofacies, one from the marsh interior and one from the marsh edge. The marsh edge biofacies was further subdivided into levee crest and bayou margin biofacies. Correlation analysis suggested that seven of the 21 …

Education is deeply embedded in the theology and religion of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Formal educational systems began to develop soon after the establishment of the Church in 1830. The first of these formal systems was the School of the Prophets, established in Kirtland, Ohio, in December 1832 to prepare selected members for missionary work. Nearly a decade later an attempt was made to establish a university in Nauvoo, Illinois. After the move to Utah, the Church continued its involvement in formal education with the establishment of “common schools, stake academies, and colleges and universities.” The …

Critical thinkers analyze and refine ideas underpinning the foundation of American defense policy and military strategy today so the defense community can apply them in strategy and force development. This is an ongoing process: new ideas emerge, are tested, and adopted, revised, or discarded. The author challenges some of the accepted notions that have become foundational to contemporary theories of military transformation. In his view, any endeavor as resource-intensive as military transformation is too important to rest on uncontested truths.
Reiterated Commemoration: Hiroshima As National Trauma, Hiro Saito
Reiterated Commemoration: Hiroshima As National Trauma, Hiro Saito
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This article examines historical transformations of Japanese collective memory of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima by utilizing a theoretical framework that combines a model of reiterated problem solving and a theory of cultural trauma. I illustrate how the event of the nuclear fallout in March 1954 allowed actors to consolidate previously fragmented commemorative practices into a master frame to define the postwar Japanese identity in terms of transnational commemoration of "Hiroshima." I also show that nationalization of trauma of "Hiroshima" involved a shift from pity to sympathy in structures of feeling about the event. This historical study suggests that a …

A Construction Of Twelve Lifelong Learners’ Perspectives: An In-Depth, Naturalistic Study Of Self-Integration Of Learning, Marvin L. Hunt
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This research focuses on understanding people who have chosen to learn throughout their lives. A broad question guided this investigation: What is the rich, lived, lifelong learning experience from the individual’s perspective? This question allowed each participant freedom to explore and define issues he/she considered important relative to lifelong learning. Twelve lifelong learners from a wide range of backgrounds, ages, and experience were serially selected using maximum variation sampling. Most qualitative research uses a priori questions aimed at a specific topic, limiting participants’ discussion. In this study, however, grand tour questions prompted each participant to offer information about lifelong learning …
A Historical Study Of Nurse Anesthesia Education In Nebraska, Sharon Loseke Hadenfeldt
A Historical Study Of Nurse Anesthesia Education In Nebraska, Sharon Loseke Hadenfeldt
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) was the first advanced practice nursing specialty, dating to the late Nineteenth Century in the United States. Nurses were first recruited and trained by surgeons to administer anesthesia beginning in the 1870’s in the United States. Apprenticeship training by either a surgeon, or another nurse, was the initial method of anesthesia training for the early nurse anesthetist. Post-graduate training programs began to appear within some hospitals at approximately 1910. The hospital-based nurse anesthesia programs became more standardized with the implementation of an accreditation program in 1952. Beginning in 1971 nurse anesthesia programs began to …

Designing Engineering Education; Development Of Design Education Model For Engineers, Jihoon Kim, Myung-Suk Kim
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This research focuses on development of model used in teaching ‘Design Thinking’ to students majoring in engineering with emphasis on creative ideation and expression, and its application examples. Following the Second World War, educational circles in the area of engineering, due to excessive influence of Engineering Science, have come to concentrate relatively more on analysis of phenomenon and theoretical research rather than traditional format of engineering education, which places importance on visual thinking and actual experience, in development of curriculum. This research presents the process of development of new educational model in order to introduce core educational program of design …
Critical Reflections On Design And Emotion, Artemis Yagou
Critical Reflections On Design And Emotion, Artemis Yagou
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Design communities have recently witnessed a growing interest in the role of emotions. This interest has produced, among other things, a series of emotion-related events and publications which have brought to the foreground a considerable amount of relevant projects. This paper looks with a critical eye at this dynamically developing domain, questions its originality, discusses the conditions of its emergence and comments on its substance. As historical aspects of design suggest, emotion in design is as old an approach as industrial design itself. The renewed preoccupation with emotion has been favoured by the dominance of pleasure-oriented branding and marketing which …

Modem Legal Reform In Egypt: Shifting Claims To Legal Authority, Shannon M. Roesler
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The article challenges the notion that Egyptian legal reform simply replaced Islamic law with European law, instead presenting it as a complex interplay where Islamic legal theory and European influences coexist. It highlights the dynamic process of integrating Islamic principles into the legal system, emphasizing the historical negotiation between fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) and siyasa (state governance).
