Fabrication Of Polymeric Microfluidic Devices For Protein Analysis, Jikun Liu Jun 2006

Fabrication Of Polymeric Microfluidic Devices For Protein Analysis, Jikun Liu

Theses and Dissertations

2-Bromoisobutyryl bromide was immobilized on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) substrates activated using an oxygen plasma. Atom-transfer radical polymerization was then performed to graft poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) on the PMMA surface. PMMA micro capillary electrophoresis (µCE) devices made with the covalently modified surfaces exhibited substantially reduced electroosmotic flow and nonspecific adsorption of proteins. Both column efficiency and migration time reproducibility were one order of magnitude better with derivatized PMMA µCE devices compared to untreated versions. Fast, reproducible, and efficient separations of proteins and peptides were demonstrated using the PEG-grafted PMMA µCE chips. All analyses were completed in less than 60 seconds, and …

Female Preference For Complex/Novel Signals In A Spider, Damian O. Elias, Eileen Hebets, Ronald R. Hoy Jun 2006

Female Preference For Complex/Novel Signals In A Spider, Damian O. Elias, Eileen Hebets, Ronald R. Hoy

Eileen Hebets Publications

Identifying the various factors that influence complex signal evolution is a difficult task, yet it is fundamental to understanding the evolution of animal communication. Here we explore the evolution of complex courtship signaling by taking advantage of a system in which sexual selection on male courtship traits has driven the diversification of geographically isolated populations of the jumping spider Habronattus pugillis Griswold. Using 2 populations (Santa Rita [SR] and Atascosa [AT]) in which SR females show xenophilic mating preferences for foreign (AT) over local males (SR), we examine the mechanisms driving this preference. Both AT and SR males produce multimodal …

Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder And Suicide? A Review Of International Evidence, Don B. Kates, Gary A. Mauser Jun 2006

Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder And Suicide? A Review Of International Evidence, Don B. Kates, Gary A. Mauser

ExpressO

The world abounds in instruments with which people can kill each other. Is the widespread availability of one of these instruments, firearms, a crucial determinant of the incidence of murder? Or do patterns of murder and/or violent crime reflect basic socio-economic and/or cultural factors to which the mere availability of one particular form of weaponry is irrelevant?

This article examines a broad range of international data that bear on two distinct but interrelated questions: first, whether widespread firearm access is an important contributing factor in murder and/or suicide, and second, whether the introduction of laws that restrict general access to …

Vocal Health Of Middle School And High School Choral Directors, Sandra M. Schwartz Jun 2006

Vocal Health Of Middle School And High School Choral Directors, Sandra M. Schwartz

Open Access Dissertations

Teachers are considered professional voice users because they depend on the regular and uninterrupted use of the voice. The nature of teaching requires more extensive use of the voice than other professions. Therefore, teachers are faced with a greater risk of developing voice problems. In addition to using the voice to present content to students, teachers must also manage the classroom and student behavior. All of these activities have potential to compromise vocal integrity. The purpose of this study was to examine the vocal health of selected middle school and high school choral directors. Specifically, it explored relationships between vocal …

Chromatographic Analysis Of Carbamazepine Binding To Human Serum Albumin: Ii. Comparison Of The Schiff Base And N-Hydroxysuccinimide Immobilization Methods, Hee Seung Kim, Rangan Mallik, David S. Hage Jun 2006

Chromatographic Analysis Of Carbamazepine Binding To Human Serum Albumin: Ii. Comparison Of The Schiff Base And N-Hydroxysuccinimide Immobilization Methods, Hee Seung Kim, Rangan Mallik, David S. Hage

David Hage Publications

Recent studies with carbamazepine on human serum albumin (HSA) columns have noted an appreciable degree of non-specific binding on supports prepared by the Schiff base immobilization method. This work examines an alternative immobilization method for HSA based on N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS)-activated silica. This support was prepared by reacting HPLC-grade silica directly with disuccinimidyl carbonate. The resulting material was compared to an HSA support prepared by the Schiff base method in terms of its activity for carbamazepine and non-specific interactions with this drug. When examined by frontal analysis, both supports gave comparable association equilibrium constants for carbamazepine interactions with HSA ((0.53–0.55) …

Right Ectopic Gestation Following In Vitro Fertilisation: Case Report, R. B. Parkar, Yamal Patel

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

The management of ectopic gestation has in recent years transformed from the normally accepted laparotomy to the laparoscopic approach. The objective of this case report is to describe a rare occurrence of an ectopic gestation following in vitro fertilisation procedure.A 35-year-old para 0 + 0, presented with lower abdominal pain and per vaginal bleeding six weeks after an in vitro fertilisation was done in South Africa. The patient was admitted with severe lower abdominal pain and per vaginal bleeding at six weeks gestation following an in vitro fertilisation procedure. She had undergone an "evacuation" one-week prior to this episode due …

Medical Model Influence In Counseling And Psychotherapy: Counseling Psychology Training Directors' Views, Dallas R. Jensen Jun 2006

Medical Model Influence In Counseling And Psychotherapy: Counseling Psychology Training Directors' Views, Dallas R. Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

The practice of counseling and psychotherapy is influenced by a number of ideologies, models, and paradigms. Among these, the medical model's influence is particularly salient. The ideology of the medical field pervades the theory, research, and practice of psychology and its influence deserves close examination. The few studies in this area that have been conducted are descriptive and basic in nature. The present study aimed to contribute richness and depth to conversations about medical model influence. By interviewing Counseling Psychology training directors and applying a qualitative analysis, this study provided the following themes that characterize views of the medical model's …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Magnetic resonance (MR)-guided near-infrared spectral tomography was developed and used to image adipose and fibroglandular breast tissue of 11 normal female subjects, recruited under an institutional review board-approved protocol. Images of hemoglobin, oxygen saturation, water fraction, and subcellular scattering were reconstructed and show that fibroglandular fractions of both blood and water are higher than in adipose tissue. Variation in adipose and fibroglandular tissue composition between individuals was not significantly different across the scattered and dense breast categories. Combined MR and near-infrared tomography provides fundamental molecular information about these tissue types with resolution governed by MR T1 images.

Renewing The Community? Pork Barrelling? Maintaining The Status Quo? What's The Agenda?, K Lavon Wright

Capstone Projects – Politics and Government

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina there are thousands of businesses in the City of New Orleans closed. In an attempt to diminish financial loss, retain local businesses, and attract investment the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development initiated the process of amending HUD guidelines to fit the city’s current economic status, and expand the existing Renewal Community boundaries to include the entire city. Simultaneously, the state legislature in collaboration with the U.S. Congress worked towards a more inclusive incentive package, the Gulf Opportunity Zone. Analysis found in this paper gives increased evidence of communication bottlenecks in federal government, and how …
