Software Based Deployment Of Encryption Keys In Wireless Sensor Networks., Timothy William Hnat Jul 2006

Software Based Deployment Of Encryption Keys In Wireless Sensor Networks., Timothy William Hnat

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sensor networks are just in their infancy. Their use will continue to grow as the technology becomes cheaper and more efficient. A current shortcoming with sensor networks is the inability to efficiently provide secure communications. As sensor networks are deployed to monitor and control systems, the security of communications will become a more important. This thesis proposes a new approach to key establishment and renewal through the use of point-to-point keys and software verification and validation to ensure the integrity of two nodes. Sensor networks exist on limited resources, so power efficiency is a concern. The proposed protocol allows for …

Progress Towards A Leishmania Vaccine, Khaled S. Tabbara

Saudi Medical Journal

Leishmaniasis is a vector-born protozoan disease. Approximately 12 million individuals are affected worldwide with an estimated annual incidence of 1.5-2 million. Two clinical manifestations are recognized, cutaneous, and visceral, both of which are common in the Middle East. In both forms, infection is chronic, with potential deformities, persistence following cure, and lifelong risk of reactivation. Attempts to develop an effective human Leishmania vaccine have not yet succeeded. Leishmanization, a crude form of live vaccination historically originated in this part of the world. Experimental vaccination has been extensively studied in model animals in the past 2 decades. In this review, major …

OBJECTIVE: To optimize and standardize an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for rapid diagnosis of human brucellosis in clinical cases identified during a surveillance study for acute febrile illness (AFI). METHODS: Serum samples from patients presenting with AFI at 13 fever hospitals across Egypt between 1999 and 2003 were kept frozen at NAMRU-3 and used in this study. The assay was evaluated in 5 subject groups: brucellosis cases confirmed by blood culture (group I, n=202) 87% positive by standard tube agglutination test (TA), brucellosis cases exclusively confirmed by TA (group II, n=218), blood cultures from AFI cases positive for bacterial species …

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of castor oil on initiating labor in term pregnant women. METHODS: We conducted this randomized control clinical trial on 47 pregnant women from August 2003 to March 2004 in Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Iran. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in labor initiation ratio in the castor oil group compared with the control group (54.2% compared with 4.3%, p<0.001). Also, the mean bishop score in the castor oil group increased from 2.50 ± 1.29 to 6.79 ± 3.20 (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: The probability of labor initiation increases during the first 24 hours after using castor oil, however, further studies are recommended to improve its efficacy and safety.

Saudi Medical Journal

Histologic variants of prostatic carcinoma are readily recognized. In this report, we describe a rare variant, adenoid cystic carcinoma, in a 75-year-old man previously diagnosed to have transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder. The diagnosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma was made by the characteristic microscopic features of the tumor morphologically and immunohistochemically. Two months later he was found to have metastatic disease. The patient9s treatment consisted of chemotherapy in combination with prednisone and hormonal therapy. Five and a half months after diagnosis, he died with metastatic disease. Making this case unique is the asynchronous occurrence of this variant with …

Exploring The Influence Of Supportive Communication Practices On Volunteer Satisfaction, Role Identity, Safety Perceptions, Loyalty, And Burnout, Virginia Ann Gregory Jul 2006

Exploring The Influence Of Supportive Communication Practices On Volunteer Satisfaction, Role Identity, Safety Perceptions, Loyalty, And Burnout, Virginia Ann Gregory

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to assess supportive communication practices as predictors of volunteer outcomes. As healthcare organizations continue to grow and expand services to patients, the need for volunteers will expand as well. If volunteers are supported within the organization they will become a part of the healthcare environment and ultimately can make a difference for the organization. lt was hypothesized that supportive communication by both staff and co-volunteers would predict higher levels of volunteer satisfaction, role identity, safety perceptions, and loyalty, and lower levels of volunteer bumout. Results indicate that emotional support from staff was the strongest …

Occupational Stress And Slavery: Evidence From Bridgetown, Barbados, Sarah Muno Jul 2006

Occupational Stress And Slavery: Evidence From Bridgetown, Barbados, Sarah Muno

Masters Theses

In 1996 and 2000, construction workers uncovered unmarked burial grounds in the Pierhead and Fontabelle sections of Bridgetown, Barbados. The human remains were removed in salvage excavation and are now housed at the University of the West Indies and the Barbados Museum and Historical Society. The associated grave goods, documentary record, and initial osteological analysis indicate these individuals were part of the enslaved workforce during the early to mid- eighteenth century. This thesis will explore the presence of vertebral osteophytosis, vertebral anterior wedge compression fractures, vertebral apophyseal facet remodeling and musculoskeletal stress markers among the human remains from Pierhead and …

Bargaining For Privacy In The Unionized Workplace, Ann C. Hodges Jul 2006

Bargaining For Privacy In The Unionized Workplace, Ann C. Hodges

Law Faculty Publications

This article considers whether collective bargaining can enhance privacy protection for employees in the United States. Employers are increasingly engaging in practices that invade employee privacy with few existing legal protections to limit their actions. While data on the extent of bargaining about privacy is limited, it appears that unions in the U.S. have primarily used the grievance and arbitration procedure to challenge invasions of privacy that lead to discipline of the employee instead of negotiating explicit contractual privacy rights. In contrast to the U.S., labor representatives in many other countries, particularly in the European Union, have greater legal rights …
