Comparison Of Protein Active Site Structures For Functional Annotation Of Proteins And Drug Design, Robert Powers, Jennifer C. Copeland, Katherine Germer, Kelly A. Mercier, Viswanathan Ramanathan, Peter Revesz

Robert Powers Publications

Rapid and accurate functional assignment of novel proteins is increasing in importance, given the completion of numerous genome sequencing projects and the vastly expanding list of unannotated proteins. Traditionally, global primary-sequence and structure comparisons have been used to determine putative function. These approaches, however, do not emphasize similarities in active site configurations that are fundamental to a protein’s activity and highly conserved relative to the global and more variable structural features. The Comparison of Protein Active Site Structures (CPASS) database and software enable the comparison of experimentally identified ligand-binding sites to infer biological function and aid in drug discovery. The …

The Roberts Court: Year 1, Lori A. Ringhand

ExpressO

This paper is an empirical examination of the recently ended 2005 Supreme Court term. The paper, in addition to reviewing the work of the Court as a whole, also examines the jurisprudence of new justices Roberts and Alito. In doing so, it proposes the intriguing possibility that these two justices may share a jurisprudential approach different from the Court's more established conservatives. If correct, this raises numerous and interesting possibilities for the future of conservativism on the Supreme Court.

The Water Infrastructure Challenge In Victoria, Robyn Mcleod Jul 2006

The Water Infrastructure Challenge In Victoria, Robyn Mcleod

Restoring A Forest Watershed And Adding Water Back To The Land, Dan C. Abercrombie Jul 2006

Restoring A Forest Watershed And Adding Water Back To The Land, Dan C. Abercrombie

2006

Historical evidence clearly shows a significant decline in both stream flow and ground water recharge in the Sacramento Mountains of southern New Mexico. Photos, oral history, early Census data, and written accounts all paint a much wetter picture than is present today. Dense forests are robbing springs and streams of surface flow. Ground water recharge during the recent drought was non-existent. Large numbers of wells all over Otero County dried up. Drilling deeper was successful in some areas, but people in some areas are still hauling water. Members of the Sacramento River Watershed Coalition recently completed several large thinning projects …

Understanding The Role And Organizational Value Of Employing An Interim University Of President During Presidential Transitions, Cameron Keith Martin Jul 2006

Understanding The Role And Organizational Value Of Employing An Interim University Of President During Presidential Transitions, Cameron Keith Martin

Theses and Dissertations

A common method for colleges and universities experiencing a transition between permanent presidents is to employ an interim president. A dominant perspective in related literature discussing the role, organizational value, and practices regarding the employment of an interim president has been based upon specific experiences of an institution or individual who had endured or fulfilled an interim presidency; absent, have been the insights of experienced interim presidents-individuals who have been a permanent president at least once and interim president multiple times at different institutions. Therefore, this research answers the following two questions: (a) what are the perspectives and insights of …

Optimization Of Active Noise Control For Small Axial Cooling Fans, Brian B. Monson Jul 2006

Optimization Of Active Noise Control For Small Axial Cooling Fans, Brian B. Monson

Theses and Dissertations

Previous work has shown that active noise control is a feasible solution to attenuate tonal noise radiated by small axial cooling fans, such as those found in desktop computers. One such control system reduced noise levels of a baffled 80-mm fan in the free field with four small loudspeakers surrounding the fan. Due to industry specified spatial constraints, a smaller fan and speaker configuration was desirable. The smaller configuration maintains similar control performance, further facilitating practical implementation of the control system. The smaller control system employs a smaller fan running at a higher speed. Different loudspeaker configurations for control exist …

Early Predictors Of Self-Regulation In Middle Childhood, Rebecca A. Colman, Sam A. Hardy, Myesha Albert, Marcela Raffaelli, Lisa J. Crockett Jul 2006

Early Predictors Of Self-Regulation In Middle Childhood, Rebecca A. Colman, Sam A. Hardy, Myesha Albert, Marcela Raffaelli, Lisa J. Crockett

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The present study examined the contribution of caregiving practices at ages 4–5 (Time 1) to children’s capacity for self regulation at ages 8–9 (Time 2). The multiethnic sample comprised 549 children of National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY) participants. High levels of maternal warmth and low levels of physically punitive discipline at Time 1 were associated with a greater capacity for self-regulation at Time 2. These associations remained significant once initial levels of self-regulation were taken into account, indicating that the development of self-regulation is open to caregiver infl uence during childhood. Neither child gender nor ethnicity moderated the effects …

An Economic-Engineering Optimization For The Binational Mexico-U.S. Lower Colorado River Delta: The Mexicali Valley Case Study, Josue Medellin-Azuara, Jay R. Lund

2006

Agricultural water use in the binational Lower Colorado River Basin is about ninety percent of all the beneficial use. Fast growing border cities of Baja California and conservation uses will increase their water allocations in the near future. The CALVIN economic-engineering model was used to evaluate the benefits and costs of a variety of water management strategies in the Lower Colorado River Delta in Mexico. Results show that at 2025 water demand conditions, agriculture seems to be the most suitable donor of water to other sectors. Wastewater reuse for irrigation and/or conservation purposes may reduce dependence on agricultural water imports …

Towards A Water Leasing/Banking System On The Middle Rio Grande: Progress To Date, David Brookshire Et Al. Jul 2006

Towards A Water Leasing/Banking System On The Middle Rio Grande: Progress To Date, David Brookshire Et Al.

2006

A recent report details the limited nature of water leasing/banking in the Western U.S. (West Water Research, 2004). The report provides an analysis of water banking legislation policies and programs in 12 Western states. There are 23 active water banks of which seven are market based pricing, meaning that the price is negotiated between the buyer and the seller with one bank having online negotiations. The other 16 banks are fixed pricing or administrative pricing schemes that are set annually. Length of transaction varies and the number of transactions is limited annually. Here we explore the role of water leasing/banking …

More And Cleaner Water Through Better Watershed Management, Sterling Grogan Jul 2006

More And Cleaner Water Through Better Watershed Management, Sterling Grogan

2006

Climate change models predict that rising global temperatures will produce in the U.S. southwest an extended period of shorter and drier winters, proportionately less snow and more rain, and reduced watershed yields. In New Mexico, water supplies for agriculture, municipal/industrial uses, and wildlife habitat are largely tied, directly or indirectly, to watershed yield already constrained by drought. With source water protection a critical issue, and increasing demands for water to support population growth, environmental protection, and economic development, any further reduction in water quantity or quality would adversely affect the quality of life and economic vitality. While studies show that …

Relative Risk Regression In Medical Research: Models, Contrasts, Estimators, And Algorithms, Thomas Lumley, Richard Kronmal, Shuangge Ma Jul 2006

Relative Risk Regression In Medical Research: Models, Contrasts, Estimators, And Algorithms, Thomas Lumley, Richard Kronmal, Shuangge Ma

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The relative risk or prevalence ratio is a natural and familiar summary of association between a binary outcome and an exposure or intervention. For rare events, the relative risk can be approximately estimated by logistic regression. For common events estimation is more difficult. We review proposed estimation algorithms for relative risk regression. Some of these give inconsistent estimates or invalid standard errors. We show that the methods that give correct inference can be viewed as arising from a family of quasilikelihood estimating functions for the same generalized linear model, differing in their efficiency and in their robustness to outlying values …

Development Of A Notational Analysis System For Selected Soccer Skills Of A Women's College Team, Camille Thomas Jul 2006

Development Of A Notational Analysis System For Selected Soccer Skills Of A Women's College Team, Camille Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this study were to develop a notational system to evaluate passing, dribbling, first touch, and individual defensive skills as they relate to success during women's soccer games and to develop a statistical model to weight the importance of each skill on creating scoring opportunities. Sequences of skills in 10 Division I intercollegiate women's soccer games were coded using well defined performance scores and outcomes. The notational analysis system was highly reliable as demonstrated by high test-retest Spearman's correlations (>0.98) between the first and second notation of 3 games for all four skills. The importance scores calculated …

Spring Break: Image, Identity, And Consumer Culture In A Florida Rite Of Passage, Meeghan Kane Jul 2006

Spring Break: Image, Identity, And Consumer Culture In A Florida Rite Of Passage, Meeghan Kane

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

This thesis is a social history of spring break, examining the economic and social aspects of this youth culture phenomenon in Florida. Spring break follows the evolution of youth culture's increasingly complex relationship with an expanding consumer culture. I am exploring its many manifestations in music, film, and popular fiction, but also its rebellious expressions in the riots and arrests on Florida's beaches. I intend to focus on the small beach communities that were transformed by spring break, particularly Fort Lauderdale. Spring break in Florida dates back to the late 1920s in Palm Beach. Wealthy New England families spent their …
