The Convergence Of Accounting Standards Or The Next Revolutionary Change In The Accounting Industry, Mariya Smantser Aug 2006

The Convergence Of Accounting Standards Or The Next Revolutionary Change In The Accounting Industry, Mariya Smantser

Honors College Theses

In the past five years the accounting industry has undergone major transformations. A wave of corporate scandals that began with Enron shook accounting's foundations, and led to passage of the Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2003. As the industry is absorbing and implementing the new requirements of the Sarbanes Oxley Act, it has yet another development on the horizon -- the pressure of convergence of accounting standards between the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). Marie Kling, senior manager in PWC, summarizes the current situation: "The train heading towards global GAAP has left the station, …

Water Quality In The Quebrada Máquina: Heavy Metal, Fecal Coliform, Chloride And Sulfide Levels, August 2006, Rachel Johnson, Jessica Mcelfresh, Laura Sawatzke

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The purpose of this study is to determine if concentrations of heavy metals, sulfide, chloride and fecal coliforms vary based on relative location to commercial and domestic waste sources along the Quebrada Máquina in Monteverde. Assessments were performed at stream and road run-off sites near Hotel Belmar, CPI Language School, the Monteverde gas station, and below a main road. In addition, three pristine forest stream sites were assessed as controls for a basis of comparison. Chromium-hexavalent, chloride, copper, iron and sulfide levels were tested at each of the seven sites. No significant difference was observed for any heavy metals tested, …

Pandemic Flu Preparation: Food And Water Supplies And Storage, E. Kim Cassel

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Yes, we can expect our lives to be “touched” by an avian influenza pandemic. Our diets and daily routines will be altered, and the concern of all of us will be to protect ourselves and our families. Since we don’t know how serious the pandemic may be in our communities, it only pays to prepare. Advance planning can make our homes safe and comfortable. It’s not an overwhelming task, and there are many guidelines to help. Look at it this way: The better we are prepared, the better we will respond and rebound, and when it’s all over, the better …

Unintended Consequences In Public Policy: Formulation And Implementation Of Michigan’S Safe Delivery Of Newborns Law, Anne Julie Hacker Aug 2006

Unintended Consequences In Public Policy: Formulation And Implementation Of Michigan’S Safe Delivery Of Newborns Law, Anne Julie Hacker

Dissertations

It is generally believed that social policy is the result of careful research and planning on the part of officials. Yet there often exists a gap between theformulation and implementation of many social policies. This gap brings with it conflict, which in turn may result in unintended consequences. Theseconsequences may be so antithetical to the formulators' original intent as to make the policy implementation paradoxical.

This qualitative research study examines the ambiguities, challenges, or boundaries that policy formulators placed on practitioners responsible for implementing Michigan's Safe Delivery of Newborns Act and that ultimately created unintended consequences indicative of a public …

Measuring The Effects Of Salinity Stress In The Red Mangrove, Rhizophora Mangle L., Patrick D. Biber Aug 2006

Measuring The Effects Of Salinity Stress In The Red Mangrove, Rhizophora Mangle L., Patrick D. Biber

Faculty Publications

The mangrove habitat exhibits many unique physical features, one of the most important of which is a salinity gradient. Photosynthetic rates, as measured by leaf stomatal conductance and leaf chlorophyll fluorescence induction, were tested as indicators of salinity stress in seedlings of the red mangrove, Rhizophora mangle, grown under five different salinity levels: 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 parts per thousand. Photosynthetic gas exchange (measured by stomatal conductance), as well as the light reaction of photosynthesis (measured by chlorophyll fluorescence) were found to decrease as salinity increased. The use of leaf stomatal conductance and chlorophyll fluorescence as a …

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Humor Workshop On The Perceived Stress Of Nurse Practitioner Students, Stephanie A. Emerson

Master's Projects

A quasi-experimental one-group pretest posttest design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of a humor workshop on the perceived stress of a sample of nurse practitioner students (n = 9) at a major university. Testing aimed at measuring perceived stress, was completed before and after participation in a" orkshop focusing on the application of humor skills in the healthcare environment. For the total sample, the mean pretest score was 15.22, SD = 5.42 and the mean posttest score was 1 0.33, SD = 3.90. A dependent samples !-test revealed a statistically significant difference (t = 4.55, p < .002). Results indicate that participation in a humor workshop of this type may be associated with lower levels of perceived stress.

Myod Synergizes With The E-Protein Heb Beta To Induce Myogenic Differentiation, Maura H. Parker, Robert L.S. Perry, Melanie C. Fauteux, Charlotte A. Berkes, Michael A. Rudnicki Aug 2006

Myod Synergizes With The E-Protein Heb Beta To Induce Myogenic Differentiation, Maura H. Parker, Robert L.S. Perry, Melanie C. Fauteux, Charlotte A. Berkes, Michael A. Rudnicki

Biology Faculty Publications

The MyoD family of basic helix-loop-helix transcription factors function as heterodimers with members of the E-protein family to induce myogenic gene activation. The E-protein HEB is alternatively spliced to generate alpha and beta isoforms. While the function of these molecules has been studied in other cell types, questions persist regarding the molecular functions of HEB proteins in skeletal muscle. Our data demonstrate that HEB alpha expression remains unchanged in both myoblasts and myotubes, whereas HEB beta is upregulated during the early phases of terminal differentiation. Upon induction of differentiation, a MyoD-HEB beta complex bound the E1 E-box of the myogenin …

Could Imatinib Replace Surgery In Esophageal Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor, Suhail Al-Salam, Hassan A. El-Teraifi, Mazen S. Taha

Saudi Medical Journal

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors GISTs are cellular spindle, or epithelioid tumors that occur in the stomach, intestine, and rarely in the esophagus. A 61-year-old man was complaining of resistant dry cough with dysphagia for one month duration. Upper gastrointestinal tract endoscopic examination showed a polypoid mass 30 cm from the incisors obstructing 50% of the lumen, where multiple biopsies were taken. Magnetic resonance imaging MRI showed a mass in the wall of the esophagus extending into the thoracic cavity. Histologically, the stained sections with the routine hematoxylin and eosin as well as the immunohistochemical stains for CD117, CD34, S100, vimentin, and …

Characterization Of Membrane Potentials In Vascular Smooth Muscle Of Hagfish, Lamprey And Trout, Prentiss Jones Jr. Aug 2006

Characterization Of Membrane Potentials In Vascular Smooth Muscle Of Hagfish, Lamprey And Trout, Prentiss Jones Jr.

Dissertations

The objective of this study was to characterize membrane potentials in systemic arteries of Pacific hagfish, Eptatretus stouti, Rainbow trout, Onchorhyncus mykiss, and Sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus. Previous studies have characterized membrane potentials in piscine tissue. However, these studies utilized non-vascular tissues such as cardiac muscle and skeletal muscle (69, 161). Characterization of membrane potentials in fish vasculature is without precedent in the literature. The hypothesis of this study was that membrane potentials in fish vascular smooth muscle differ little between species when comparable vasculature is evaluated.

Frozen Beetle Treats Are Environmentally Friendly, W. John Hayden Aug 2006

Frozen Beetle Treats Are Environmentally Friendly, W. John Hayden

Biology Faculty Publications

At my rural household, the most vexatious insect pest has got to be the ubiquitous Japanese beetle. Native to Japan, these pests have infested most of eastern North America, with isolated infestations appearing in some western states. One reason that Japanese beetles are so bad is that they deliver a double-whammy: the larvae (grubs) consume roots and are particularly destructive of turf and pasture grasses while the adults consume leaves and flowers of a wide variety of plants, leaving behind skeletonized versions of the plant parts consumed.

Kinetics Of Sulfur And Peroxide Cured Epdm Rubber Aging In Chloraminated Water., Jahnavi Valleru 1982- Aug 2006

Kinetics Of Sulfur And Peroxide Cured Epdm Rubber Aging In Chloraminated Water., Jahnavi Valleru 1982-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Elastomer degradation when exposed to chloraminated potable water is dependent on a number of poorly understood factors. Temperature and chloramine concentration are both believed to play roles, however, they have not been adequately defined. In order to estimate the material performance and predict the service life of elastomeric parts, knowledge of degradation modes, rate constants of the aging process and their activation energies is useful. EPDM elastomers are used in numerous applications which require resistance to ozone attack and weather due to their stable, saturated polymer backbone structure. Accelerated aging experiments were conducted on both EPDM - S and EPDM …

Using Auditory Evoked Brain Responses To Detect Anxious Vulnerabilities In Neonates., Kyle William Harvison Aug 2006

Using Auditory Evoked Brain Responses To Detect Anxious Vulnerabilities In Neonates., Kyle William Harvison

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Anxiety disorders are prevalent in both adult and child populations, and are associated with significant economic and psychosocial costs. There are clearly familial patterns of transmission within the anxiety disorders, and the inherited risk is likely a non-specific vulnerability toward negative affect, with a biological-environmental interaction leading to specific manifestations within the anxiety disorders. Among the vulnerabilities toward anxiety may be information processing biases that predispose individuals to be more vigilant to novelty, processes that may be specifically associated with the right cerebral hemisphere. The current study utilized auditory event related potentials (ERPs) to explore the degree to which such …
