Effect Of Spirulina Platensis Pretreatment On Isoproterenol Induced Hyperlipidemia In Rats, Ganesh V. Halade, Archana R. Juvekar

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

The antihyperlipidemic activity of Spirulina platensis (family: Oscillatoriacae, cynobacteria/blue green algae) was evaluated in isoproterenol-induced hyperlipidemic rats. In the present study, Spirulina platensis powder suspended in water was administered orally to rats for 21 days at the dose of 450 mg/kg/day followed by subcutaneous administration of isoproterenol (200 mg/kg/day for 2 days). Isoproterenol, a synthetic catecholamine and β-adrenergic agonist has reported to cause oxidative stress with subsequent increase in serum lipid profile after subcutaneous administration. The clinical biochemistry parameters like serum cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, atherogenic index, VLDL and LDL cholesterol of the rats were determined for the evaluation of antihyperlipidemic …

Pandemic Flu Preparation: If We Don’T Have Utilities, How Do We Cook, Keep Things Clean?, E. Kim Cassel

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Yes, we can expect our lives to be “touched” by an avian influenza pandemic. Our diets and daily routines will be altered, and the concern of all of us will be to protect ourselves and our families. Since we don’t know how serious the pandemic may be in our communities, it only pays to prepare. Advance planning can make our homes safe and comfortable. It’s not an overwhelming task, and there are many guidelines to help. Look at it this way: The better we are prepared, the better we will respond and rebound, and when it’s all over, the better …

Rickettsia Felis From Cat Fleas: Isolation And Culture In A Tick-Derived Cell Line, Walairat Pornwiroon, Susan S. Pourciau, Lane D. Foil, Kevin R. Macaluso

Faculty Publications

Rickettsia felis, the etiologic agent of spotted fever, is maintained in cat fleas by vertical transmission and resembles other tick-borne spotted fever group rickettsiae. In the present study, we utilized an Ixodes scapularis-derived tick cell line, ISE6, to achieve isolation and propagation of R. felis. A cytopathic effect of increased vacuolization was commonly observed in R. felis-infected cells, while lysis of host cells was not evident despite large numbers of rickettsiae. Electron microscopy identified rickettsia-like organisms in ISE6 cells, and sequence analyses of portions of the citrate synthase (gltA), 16S rRNA, Rickettsia genus-specific 17-kDa antigen, and spotted fever group-specific outer …

Nanoparticle Agglomerates For Pulmonary Drug Delivery, Rohan Bhavane Aug 2006

Nanoparticle Agglomerates For Pulmonary Drug Delivery, Rohan Bhavane

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The Pulmonary route has been traditionally used to treat diseases of the respiratory tract. However, important research within the last two decades have shown that in addition to treating local diseases, a wide range of systemic diseases can be treated by delivering drugs to the lungs. The recent FDA approval to market Exubera, an inhalable form of insulin developed by Pfizer, to treat Diabetes, may just be the stepping stone that the pharmaceutical industry needs to market other drugs to treat systemic diseases via the lungs. However, this technology still needs repeated drug doses to control glucose levels, as the …

Perceptions Of Superintendents And Business Managers Regarding Purchasing Policies, Practices, And Procedures In Small, Rural Districts: A North Dakota Study, Charles D. Dunlop Aug 2006

Perceptions Of Superintendents And Business Managers Regarding Purchasing Policies, Practices, And Procedures In Small, Rural Districts: A North Dakota Study, Charles D. Dunlop

Theses and Dissertations

The challenge of determining efficient purchasing practices in the school districts of North Dakota motivated this study. One of the problems is that most of the schools are relatively small and cannot devote the personnel needed to ensure that the best quality of supplies, materials, and equipment is purchased at the lowest possible prices. One supposition prior to this study was that many of the North Dakota school districts, for a variety of reasons, put little emphasis on the policies, practices, and procedures that contribute to efficiency in purchasing. Another premise that was investigated was that small, isolated schools were …

Perceptions Of The Future Need For Family And Consumer Sciences Teachers In North Dakota's Public Schools, Elaine H. Ann Larson

Theses and Dissertations

Family and consumer sciences (FACS) school programs provide some of the earliest opportunities for students to learn relationship, communications, teamwork, and decision-making skills that support and strengthen family life and to make healthy lifestyle choices that have a positive impact on all of society. Unfortunately, research data document a shortage of F ACS teachers across the nation. Without an increasing supply of teachers, many programs may be weakened and some may be eliminated.

The purpose of this study is to identify the future need for F ACS teachers in the North Dakota public schools. A secondary purpose is to identify …

The Drosophila Boundary Element-Associated Factors Beaf-32a And Beaf-32b Affect Chromatin Structure, Matthew K. Gilbert, Yian Yee Tan, Craig M. Hart Aug 2006

The Drosophila Boundary Element-Associated Factors Beaf-32a And Beaf-32b Affect Chromatin Structure, Matthew K. Gilbert, Yian Yee Tan, Craig M. Hart

Faculty Publications

Binding sites for the Drosophila boundary element-associated factors BEAF-32A and -32B are required for the insulator activity of the scs' insulator. BEAF binds to hundreds of sites on polytene chromosomes, indicating that BEAF-utilizing insulators are an important class in Drosophila. To gain insight into the role of BEAF in flies, we designed a transgene encoding a dominant-negative form of BEAF under GAL4 UAS control. This BID protein encompasses the BEAF self-interaction domain. Evidence is provided that BID interacts with BEAF and interferes with scs' insulator activity and that BEAF is the major target of BID in vivo. BID expression during …

Health In Cuba, Richard S. Cooper, Joan F. Kennelly, Pedro Orduñez-Garcia Aug 2006

Health In Cuba, Richard S. Cooper, Joan F. Kennelly, Pedro Orduñez-Garcia

Faculty Publications

The poorer countries of the world continue to struggle with an enormous health burden from diseases that we have long had the capacity to eliminate. Similarly, the health systems of some countries, rich and poor alike, are fragmented and inefficient, leaving many population groups underserved and often without health care access entirely. Cuba represents an important alternative example where modest infrastructure investments combined with a well-developed public health strategy have generated health status measures comparable with those of industrialized countries. Areas of success include control of infectious diseases, reduction in infant mortality, establishment of a research and biotechnology industry, and …

Nicaragua: Bamboo Testing Efficiency Of Wood Burning Stoves, Joseph Paulsen, Chris Helm

ETHOS Technical Reports

Chris Helm and Joseph Paulsen traveled to Managua, Nicaragua from May 12, 2006 to July 7, 2006 to volunteer in a research capacity for Proleña Ecofogón, an ecologically conscious wood burning stove manufacturer. The focus was to determine efficiencies of bamboo testing with a traditional model stove, construct and test several brick stoves with smaller capacities, and investigate wood burning deep fryers. A new firebox was designed that greatly improved the use of space efficiently while maintaining a rigid geometry. In addition, several field studies were completed to determine a quantitative efficiency in operation and a qualitative aesthetic and safety …
