Incentivizing And Protecting Informants Prior To Mass Atrocities Such As Genocide: An Alternative To Post Hoc Courts And Tribunals, Eric Talbot Jensen

Faculty Scholarship

International institutions are almost exclusively reactive to violations of international law. There are very few systemic methods of proactively trying to prevent egregious violations such as genocide; rather, international law seems to take punishing violators as its sole approach. In modern times, most of the punishment and post-event enforcement has come through international courts and tribunals. These courts and tribunals are astoundingly expensive and notoriously inefficient. More importantly, the threat of prosecution does not appear to act as an effective deterrent in preventing criminal acts. This is unacceptable. With hundreds of thousands of lives at stake, the international community must …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Rotator cuff tear is one of the most common causes of shoulder disability in middle-aged and elderly people. Although many patients with rotator cuff tear have pain and dysfunction, there is a great variability in the clinical manifestations. The management of rotator cuff tear includes non-operative and operative methods. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic effect of rehabilitation and to compare the rehabilitation effects between patients receiving operation or not.Twenty-two patients were enrolled in this study (13 operative and 9 non-operative). Each subject received rehabilitation therapy (including heat packing, TENS, massage, and therapeutic exercise) twice a …

Waveform Symmetry During The Habituation Process Of Sympathetic Skin Response, Wei-Ting Wu, Ya-Ping Huang, Chi-Lun Rau, Hao-Pai Ni, Shin-Liang Pan

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

For investigating autonomic function, sympathetic skin response (SSR) is usually used as a non-invasive test. In previous studies, SSR was applied in the patients with neurological diseases (such as stroke), and the amplitude of SSR was compared between the left and right hand (or foot). Most researchers used electrical limb stimulation to elicit SSR in both limbs. However, the symmetry of SSR in healthy subjects has not been well established. Besides, SSR testing may affect the symmetry of SSR. Moreover, although habituation phenomena are commonly seen during SSR testing, few studies have discussed the symmetry of SSR during repetitive SSR …

An Architecture For Intelligent Health Assessment Enabled Ieee 1451 Compliant Smart Sensors, Donald Albert Nickles

Theses and Dissertations

As systems become increasingly complex and costly, potential failure mechanisms and indicators are numerous and difficult to identify, while the cost of loss is very expensive - human lives, replacement units, and impacts to national security. In order to ensure the safety and long-term reliability of vehicles, structures, and devices attention must be directed toward the assessment and management of system health. System health is the key component that links data, information, and knowledge to action. Integrated Systems Health Management (ISHM) doctrine calls for comprehensive real-time health assessment and management of systems where the distillation of raw data into information …

The Role Of Caregivers In The Management Of Alzheimer’S Disease : Examples From Asian Countries, Joydeep D. Chaudhuri, Srijit Das

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

The demographic profile of the Asian population is rapidly changing, with a fast increasing ageing population, owing to an increase in longevity and a decreasing birth rate. Moreover, due to improved medical facilities and the increased aged population, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is fast emerging as a major health problem in many Asian countries. As curative treatment for AD is still elusive, care giving is an important component of the management of AD. While Western countries have recognised this issue, besides highly industrialized Japan, the Asian initiative has been relatively slow. This article aims to address issues involved in caregiving in …

Gabapentin For Treatment Of Neuropathic Pain In Patients With Spinal Cord Injury, Chao-Min Wang, Yen-Ho Wang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The patients with spinal cord injury suffer from motor and sensory impairment with bowel and bladder dysfunction. However, chronic neuropathic pain is also a common complaint after spinal cord injury and is usually refractory to many therapies. The exact mechanism of relieving hyperalgesia and allodynia is still unknown, but most believed it is related to N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor and voltage-dependent calcium channel. Gabapentin is supposed to be an antagonist of NMDA receptor complex which mediates an influx of calcium ions when activated. In addition, gabapentin inhibits neuronal calcium influx in a calcium channel by binding to the α2δ subunit of …

Rehabilitation Problems In An Adult Patient After Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis: A Casereport, Hsiao-Huei Chen, Lin-Fen Hsieh, Feng-Chu Tseng

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis is a monophasic disorder of unknown pathogenesis, characterized by demyelination of the central nervous system. The possible T-cell immune-mediated inflammatory process, affecting mainly children and young adults, typically follows a recent infection or immunization. Meningeal symptoms are common early in the course and often begin 1-3 weeks after infection. Abnormalities of motor, sensory, gait, visual, and cognitive function are variable and depend on the location (cerebral white matter, brainstem, cerebellum, or spinal cord) of the most severely damaged areas of the nervous system. Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis is unusual in middle-aged or elderly adults. The mortality rate is …

Species Richness And Abundance Estimates Of Small Mammals In Zaraninge Coastal Forest In Tanzania, H. Y. D. Kiwia Dec 2006

Species Richness And Abundance Estimates Of Small Mammals In Zaraninge Coastal Forest In Tanzania, H. Y. D. Kiwia

Tanzania Journal of Science

A study on small mammals (<2 kg) was conducted in Zaraninge Forest, Coast Region, Tanzania, in the dry and wet seasons from 1994 to1996. The forest was found to harbour 11 small mammal species from 11 genera and seven families. There was high similarity in the number of species caught during the two seasons (Sørensen Coefficient (CCs)=0.92), implying there to be minimal migration of the species in the area. A total of 159 individuals were caught during the dry season, rodents accounting for 89.3% of the total catch and insectivores 10.7%. The most common species were Cricetomys gambianus and Grammomys dolichurus that had trap successes of 2.83 and 1.11 respectively. During the wet season 185 animals were caught, rodents accounting for 92.4% of the total catch and insectivores 7.6%. Cricetomys gambianus was significantly more abundant during the dry season. Graphiurus murinus was not caught in this season and no trend in abundance was detected for the other species. Forest specialist species included Paraxerus palliatus and Petrodromus petersi. No species was endemic to the forest, near-endemic species that occur in coastal and Eastern Arc forests included P. petersi and Beamys hindei. B. hindei also occurs in a few other East African forests. Threatened species are B. hindei and P. palliatus that are vulnerable and P. petersi that is endangered. Lepus capensis is in Appendix I of CITES list and Hystrix cristata and Mellivora capensis in Appendix III. The forest, though small is in good health and fairly well protected, therefore the species are not in danger of being locally extinct in the near future.
