Limiting attrition (i.e., participant dropout before the conclusion of a study) is a major challenge faced by researchers when implementing clinical trials. Data from a smoking cessation trial for females (N = 246) were analyzed in order to identify baseline smoking-related, demographic and psychological characteristics affecting likelihood of early (i.e., before the quit attempt) and late (i.e., after the quit attempt) dropout. There were a number of significant demographic predictors of attrition. Participants with at least one child living at home were at increased risk of both early and late dropout. Non-Whites were at increased risk of early dropout, while …

Reversed-Phase Hplc Determination Of Citral In Locally Grown Lemon Grass Harvested At Different Season., Mahmoud Al-Shaer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A simple HPLC procedure for the quantitative determination of citral, the major fragrant component in the lemon grass, has been developed. The procedure involves a C-8 stationary phase using a 90:10 methanol: water pH 5 mobile phase containing 0.25% 1-octanesulfonic acid and an UV detector (set at 233 nm). The lemon grass leaves were harvested fresh at different times of the year and were soaked in methanol for 48 hours without any mechanical assistance to extract the citral and other methanol soluble components. The method showed good reproducibility with relative standard deviation of 2.8% and 10.8% for two different sets …
American Reeducation Of German Pows, 1943-1946., Pamela Croley
American Reeducation Of German Pows, 1943-1946., Pamela Croley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The United States held almost 500,000 enemy combatants within her borders during World War II. Out of those 500,000 men, 380,000 were from Nazi Germany. Nazi POWs were confined to camps built near small rural towns in almost every state. It was not something that was well known to the American public. Even less known was the American Military's effort, through reeducation, to introduce Hitler's soldiers to a new political ideology-democracy. This thesis will explore how the reeducation program was formed; examine the people, both German and American, who participated in it, and make a determination on whether or not …

Polyaniline And Its Derivatives For Environmental Analysis., Atogho Jude Abia
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Electrooxidation has been used to deposit thin film polyaniline as well as its derivative - thin film poly (ortho-phenylenediamine) (POPD) and poly (meta-phenylenediamine) (PMPD) on carbon electrodes, which are subsequently used to monitor the environmental heavy metal ions (Hg2+, Pb2+ ,Cd2+) through a rather unusual "blocking" of anodic stripping for these metals. Using Hg2+ as a model, its cyclic voltammogram for a modified glassy carbon electrode with the resultant polymer shows an enhanced cathodic peak that increases linearly with the analyte ion concentration. POPD also exhibits unique selective detection for organic species. Acetaminophen and …

Prescribed fire in the southern Appalachians is a frequently used and controversial forest management practice. Research is limited on the effects of prescribed fire in the mesic southern Appalachians, where many of Tennessee's rare and regionally endemic plant species occur. This study examined the effects of prescribed fire on the herbaceous layer. Field work was conducted on six previously burned sites within the Cherokee National Forest in northeast Tennessee. Complimentary non-burned sites were selected based on similarity of physical characteristics and forest structure. The numbers of herbaceous species and individuals and the total numbers of species and individuals were determined …

The secondary data consisted of an inmate sample of 1,054 taken from 30 prisons of minimum, medium, maximum and close security across the states of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Ohio. …
Mediating Animal Law Matters, Kathy M. Hessler
Mediating Animal Law Matters, Kathy M. Hessler
ExpressO
Animal law matters are slowly making their way through our court system, resulting in some changes in the way we, as a society, view our relationships with non-human animals. Courts are increasingly struggling to reconcile two opposing constructs: the idea that non-human animals are property under the law, and the reality that non-human animals are different from other forms of property. Progress in resolving this tension within the courts is, and will continue to be, slow. The question then arises, what alternative exists?
Mediation is a method increasingly turned to in this country as an alternative to traditional litigation. It …

Generalized Monotonic Functional Mixed Models With Application To Modeling Normal Tissue Complications , Matthew Schipper, Jeremy Taylor, Xihong Lin
Generalized Monotonic Functional Mixed Models With Application To Modeling Normal Tissue Complications , Matthew Schipper, Jeremy Taylor, Xihong Lin
The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Normal tissue complications are a common side effect of radiation therapy. They are the consequence of the dose of radiation received by the normal tissue surrounding the tumor site. It is not known what function of the dose distribution to the normal tissue drives the presence and severity of the complications. Regarding the density of the dose distribution as a curve, a summary measure is obtained by integrating a weighting function of dose (w(d)) over the dose density. For biological reasons the weight function should be monotonic. We propose to study the dose effect on a clinical outcome using a …

This is a union policy grievance regarding the Employer's approach to the compensation of employees for time lost on storm days. The Employer was compensating only if the time lost was for less than two hours. The Union believed that the Employer should pay for the first two hours. The Union seeks full redress, including retroactive compensation. The Employer agreed to the requested remedy if the Grievance is successful.
The grievance fails. The Union could not prove its interpretation of the relevant clauses of the Collective Agreement.

The U.S. Tax System In International Perspective, John E. Anderson, Council Of Economic Advisers
Department of Economics: Faculty Publications
All governments face two important decisions. They must choose the scope and scale of public goods and services to provide for their citizens, and they must also decide how to collect the funds to finance those public services. Chapter 5, The U.S. Tax System in International Perspective, examines U.S. choices in the context of other countries. It makes three key points:
• Fundamental choices about tax systems matter because they affect the living standards of citizens.
• The United States has made different choices from other countries. The United States has a relatively low tax burden compared to the rest …
