The Genuine Article: A Subversive Economic Perspective On The Law's Procreationist Vision Of Marriage , Courtney M. Cahill Aug 2006

The Genuine Article: A Subversive Economic Perspective On The Law's Procreationist Vision Of Marriage , Courtney M. Cahill

ExpressO

This Article provides a new perspective on the image of marriage that has emerged from the same-sex marriage debate. However flawed, the procreation rationale has enjoyed overwhelming success in recent same-sex marriage litigation. However absurd, the idea that same-sex marriage is a species of counterfeit has become so commonplace in the rhetoric surrounding same-sex marriage that it nearly escapes our notice. This Article argues that while neither the procreation rationale nor contemporary counterfeiting rhetoric makes much sense when considered in isolation, both make a great deal of sense when considered in concert. To that end, this Article looks at the …

Discounting, On Stilts, Douglas A. Kysar Aug 2006

Discounting, On Stilts, Douglas A. Kysar

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This paper provides a critical overview of several articles presented at the Intergenerational Discounting and Intergenerational Equity Conference held at the University of Chicago Law School on April 27-28, 2006. First, it demonstrates that conventional normative justifications offered for the use of discounting future costs and benefits for policy analysis in the intergenerational context do not withstand scrutiny. Second, it observes that the compensatory transfers that are sometimes thought to sanitize the cost-benefit procedure in the intergenerational context are deeply problematic, both in their theoretical construction and in their practical adequacy for the tasks they are being deployed to accomplish. …

Simultaneously Optimizing Dose And Schedule Of A New Cytotoxic Agent, Thomas M. Braun, Peter F. Thall, Hoang Nguyen, Marcos De Lima Aug 2006

Simultaneously Optimizing Dose And Schedule Of A New Cytotoxic Agent, Thomas M. Braun, Peter F. Thall, Hoang Nguyen, Marcos De Lima

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Traditionally, phase I clinical trial designs determine a maximum tolerated dose of an experimental cytotoxic agent based on a fixed schedule, usually one course consisting of multiple administrations, while varying the dose per administration between patients. However, in actual medical practice patients often receive several courses of treatment, and some patients may receive one or more dose reductions due to low-grade (non-dose limiting) toxicity in previous courses. As a result, the overall risk of toxicity for each patient is a function of both the schedule and the dose used at each adminstration. We propose a new paradigm for Phase I …

Continuing his SOP drills he began to excavate the area of the source of the signal to the metal detector using the trowel issued to him for this purpose. He may not have been working to the SOP drill, as it seems likely that, because of the restricted area of work caused by the surrounding rocks, he was digging directly down to the mine, rather than digging across to the mine by excavating a small trench. An explosion occurred when the PMN antipersonnel mine, which was the source of the metal detector signal, detonated.

The Effects Of Wearing A Cooling Vest During The Warm-Up On Long Distance Interval Training, Andrew Robert Tegeder Aug 2006

The Effects Of Wearing A Cooling Vest During The Warm-Up On Long Distance Interval Training, Andrew Robert Tegeder

Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: Reducing body temperature before exercise is called precooling. Past research suggests that reducing body core temperature (Tc) slightly can result in improved running performance. This study evaluated the effects that warming up, while wearing a cooling vest prior to an interval workout, had on Tc, and interval time in long-distance runners. Methods: Nineteen healthy male collegiate cross-country runners were recruited for this study. Each subject warmed up and exercised under two different conditions: (a) an experimental condition in which subjects wore a Nike PreCool® ice vest during warm-up and (b) a control condition. Subjects performed a warm-up followed by …

Uncontrollable And Unpredictable Stress With A Reminder Experience Induces Long-Lasting Effects On Physiology And Behavior: A Novel Approach To Modeling Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder In Rats, Phillip R. Zoladz Aug 2006

Uncontrollable And Unpredictable Stress With A Reminder Experience Induces Long-Lasting Effects On Physiology And Behavior: A Novel Approach To Modeling Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder In Rats, Phillip R. Zoladz

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

People who endure horrific, life-threatening experiences are at risk for developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, only about 25% of all individuals who experience trauma develop PTSD. Recent research indicates that the presence of certain physiological conditions, such as reduced cortisol and parasympathetic inhibition, during trauma may increase one's susceptibility to developing PTSD. Thus, I attempted to develop a novel animal model of PTSD and test the hypothesis that reduced adrenal and parasympathetic activity during stress would exacerbate its long-term effects on behavior.

In Experiment One, adult male rats were exposed to two stress sessions, each involving one hour of …

Chronic-Alcohol Exposure Alters Igf1 Signaling In H9c2 Cells Via Changes In Pkc Delta, Richard Ila, Michele Solem Aug 2006

Chronic-Alcohol Exposure Alters Igf1 Signaling In H9c2 Cells Via Changes In Pkc Delta, Richard Ila, Michele Solem

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Previously, we have demonstrated that chronic-alcohol exposure alters insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) signaling in adult rat heart cells. This report examines the effects of alcohol in vitro on the expression of protein kinase C (PKC) alpha, delta, and epsilon using the embryonic heart cell line, H9c2, and how this may be linked to changes in IGF1 signal transduction. Western blot analyses of H9c2 protein preparations demonstrate that there are significant increases in the total protein levels of PKC delta and epsilon after 4 days exposure to alcohol, and similar increases were found after 2 and 6 days exposure. In …

Working Trees For Water Quality Aug 2006

Working Trees For Water Quality

Working Trees (USDA-NAC)

Water is a precious national resource. Often, human activities degrade the quality of the water in the streams, lakes, estuaries, wetlands, and aquifiers on which we depend. Pollutants from agricultural and urban sources have made many of our waters unsuitable for swimming and fishing. Excessive sedimentation, pesticides, and fertilizers are harming fish and other aquatic life. Changes in land use also have had a dramatic effect on floodwater damage and frequency. Both surface and subsurfaceAgroforestry drinking water supplies are being impacted by human activities.

Water quality is the end result of the individual actions of all the “neighbors” in a …
