Group Additive Regression Models For Genomic Data Analysis, Yihui Luan, Hongzhe Li Aug 2006

Group Additive Regression Models For Genomic Data Analysis, Yihui Luan, Hongzhe Li

UPenn Biostatistics Working Papers

One important problem in genomic research is to identify genomic features such as gene expression data or DNA single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are related to clinical phenotypes. Often these genomic data can be naturally divided into biologically meaningful groups such as genes belonging to the same pathways or SNPs within genes. In this paper, we propose group additive regression models and a group gradient descent boosting procedure for identifying groups of genomic features that are related to clinical phenotypes. Our simulation results show that by dividing the variables into appropriate groups, we can obtain better identification of the group …

From Healing The Whole Person: An Argument For Therapeutic Touch As A Complement To Traditional Medical Practice, Marlene B. Huff, Kimberly K. Mcclanahan, Hatim A. Omar

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

The growing popularity and use of therapeutic touch (TT) is an issue that has generated controversy and concern within the medical community. While anecdotal and traditional scientific evidence suggest that TT would be an advantageous addition for clinics and hospitals to include in their armamentarium of complementary interventions within the realm of traditional medicine, TT has not become widely available in the U.S. One reason for the lack of availability may be the dearth of conclusive scientific support for TT's efficacy and, therefore, its inclusion in clinic and hospital treatment planning would give it the appearance of legitimate practice, which …

Necessary Knowledge For Communications Policy: Information Inequalities And Commercial Data Access And Usage In The Policymaking Process, Philip M. Napoli, Michelle Seaton Aug 2006

Necessary Knowledge For Communications Policy: Information Inequalities And Commercial Data Access And Usage In The Policymaking Process, Philip M. Napoli, Michelle Seaton

ExpressO

Communications policymaking increasingly relies upon large-scale databases manufactured and marketed by commercial organizations. Data providers such as BIA Research, Nielsen Media Research, and Arbitron play a vital role in aggregating the data that policymakers, policy analysts, and policy advocates rely upon in policy deliberations. In many ways, these data providers supplement the limited data gathering capacity of government bodies such as the FCC and NTIA and thereby help to bring a greater quantity of relevant data to bear on policy issues than would otherwise be possible. Indeed, these data are utilized extensively by stakeholders with an interest in policy outcomes …

The Liberal Assault On The Fourth Amendment, Christopher Slobogin

ExpressO

The Liberal Assault on the Fourth Amendment Christopher Slobogin As construed by the Supreme Court, the Fourth Amendment’s reasonableness requirement regulates overt, non-regulatory government searches of homes, cars, and personal effects–-and virtually nothing else. This essay is primarily about how we got to this point. It is fashionable to place much of the blame for today’s law on the Warren Court’s adoption of the malleable expectation of privacy concept as the core value protected by the Fourth Amendment. But this diagnosis fails to explain why even the more liberal justices have often gone along with many of the privacy-diminishing holdings …

Clouds, Cameras, And Computers: The First Amendment And Networked Public Places, Timothy Zick

ExpressO

Public places are becoming highly networked environments. Municipalities are draping wireless clouds and meshes over vast public spaces, facilitating always-on internet connectivity. Surveillance cameras are now a pervasive presence in many public places. The people who gather in public and use public spaces are wearing and carrying ever more sophisticated computing devices. An integrated grid of networked connectivity is being built into traditional bricks-and-mortar public places. This Article examines the First Amendment implications of the progression toward networked public places. Wireless clouds will raise substantial property, public forum, and privacy issues. The networking of public places will also challenge traditional …

Estimation Of Heat Transfer Coefficients Of Cooked Boneless Ham, Kimberly Ryland, Lijun Wang, Alejandro Amézquita, Curtis L. Weller

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences

Biological heat transfer depends on many factors; however it is necessary to understand the cooling process to design safe and efficient meat cooling techniques. For this reason the convective heat transfer coefficient h of a five pound processed boneless pork ham was evaluated by two methods using a similarly shaped aluminum block. A Lumped Parameter approach in which mass transfer was ignored resulted in a heat transfer coefficient value of 5.10 W/m2K. A second method, which included mass transfer, resulted in a value of 9.11 W/m2K. These values fell within the expected range of 5-20 W/m …
