On The Ottoman Consent Documents For Medical Interventions And The Modern Concept Of Informed Consent, Mahmut A. Kara, Sahin Aksoy

Saudi Medical Journal

Information for patients prior to medical intervention is one of the principles of modern medical practice. In this study, we looked at an earlier practice of this principle. Ottoman judges had record books called sicil. One of the categories in sicils was the consent documents called riza senedi, which was a patient-physician contract approved by the courts. These contracts were especially for the protection of physicians from punishment if the patient dies. It is not clear whether patients were informed properly or not. Consent for minors was obtained from parents. However, a situation where an adult does not have the …

Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors In Patients With Confirmed Cardiovascular Disease, Mohammad Aghaeishahsavari, Masood Noroozianavval, Pegah Veisi, Raziye Parizad, Jahanbakhsh Samadikhah

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To assess the magnitude of the problem of cardiovascular risk factors in hospitalized patients, and to establish cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor profiles. METHODS: The study included 476 confirmed CVD patients selected by a multi stage stratified cluster random sampling technique in Tabriz Heart Center (Shaheed Madani Hospital), Tabriz, Iran from February 2004 to May 2005. After obtaining demographic information and performing physical examination, biochemical parameters were measured. Data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Science version 10.05, where p value of <0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Obesity was the most common abnormality (93.5%) followed by diabetes mellitus (58.4%), low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) (45.4%), low physical activity (41.6%), high total cholesterol (40.1%), high triglyceride (37.2%), high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (30.7%), diastolic hypertension (28.4%), high systolic blood pressure (24.8%) and smoking (20%). Of the total number of patients, 93% had one risk factors for CVD, 43% had 2, 16% had 3, and 5% had 4 risk factors. The prevalence of lipid disorders in females was more than males except for low HDL-c (p<0.05). Between lipid profiles, only TG showed a correlation between age (p<0.05). It was noticed that obesity accompanied by lipid profile abnormalities as low serum levels of HDL-c and high level of TG, TC, and LDL-c were more seen in obese patients (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: This study revealed a high prevalence of risk factors in CVD patients; thus, urgent lifestyle modification is recommended.

“Reductive Ozonolysis” Via A New Fragmentation Of Carbonyl Oxides, Chris Schwartz, Joseph Raible, Kyle Mott, Patrick Dussault Sep 2006

“Reductive Ozonolysis” Via A New Fragmentation Of Carbonyl Oxides, Chris Schwartz, Joseph Raible, Kyle Mott, Patrick Dussault

Patrick Dussault Publications

This account describes the development of methodologies for ‘reductive’ ozonolysis, the direct ozonolytic conversion of alkenes into carbonyl groups without the intermediacy of 1,2,4-trioxolanes (ozonides). Ozonolysis of alkenes in the presence of DMSO produces a mixture of aldehyde and ozonide. The combination of DMSO and Et3N results in improved yields of carbonyls but still leaves unacceptable levels of residual ozonides; similar results are obtained using secondary or tertiary amines in the absence of DMSO. The influence of amines is believed to result from conversion to the corresponding N-oxides; ozonolysis in the presence of amine N-oxides efficiently …

The purpose of this study was to investigate cadets' perceptions of their experiences in a required gymnastics course using the critical incident technique. Students described experiences in the gymnastics class that they believed had a positive or negative influence on their development as cadets and future Army officers. Key elements of their responses were classified into 16 positively perceived and 11 negatively perceived categories. The top positive categories were confidence, encouragement, fear management, modeling, additional instruction, and …

Rethinking Concept Mapping For Youth Participatory Evaluation In The Context Of Youth Development Programs, Jennifer Southwick Brown Sep 2006

Rethinking Concept Mapping For Youth Participatory Evaluation In The Context Of Youth Development Programs, Jennifer Southwick Brown

Journal of Youth Development

As a mixed-methods participatory approach, concept mapping (Trochim, 1989) provides unique opportunities for engaging youth in evaluating the contexts and environments in which they develop. Youth development programs, by definition, seek to fully engage youth as partners and provide them with opportunities to effect positive change. This includes encouraging youth to be involved in the process of designing, implementing, and evaluating the programs and activities in which they participate. Concept mapping has been used successfully with adult populations; however its utility with adolescents in the context of youth development programming has yet to be explored. This paper explores both the …

Key Leadership Roles In The 9/11 Terrorist Attack, Aubrey Immelman Sep 2006

Key Leadership Roles In The 9/11 Terrorist Attack, Aubrey Immelman

Psychology Faculty Publications

Personality assessment of three al-Qaida leaders in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the United States – Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and Mohamed Atta – provides evidence for a rudimentary model of the leadership roles required for a global-reach terrorist operation: (1) a narcissistic, charismatic leader devoid of core values beyond personal self-interest, adept at exploiting others in pursuit of his grandiose ambitions (e.g., bin Laden); (2) a strategic-thinking “true believer” without constraints of conscience regarding the level of violence he is willing to employ in his single-minded pursuit of mission (e.g., al-Zawahiri); and (3) unobtrusive, disciplined operatives …

Relationships, Layoffs, And Organizational Resilience: Airline Industry Responses To September 11, Jody H. Gittell, Kim Cameron, Sandy Lim, Victor Rivas Sep 2006

Relationships, Layoffs, And Organizational Resilience: Airline Industry Responses To September 11, Jody H. Gittell, Kim Cameron, Sandy Lim, Victor Rivas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, affected the U.S. airline industry more than almost any other industry. Certain airlines emerged successful and demonstrated remarkable resilience while others languished. This investigation identifies reasons why some airline companies recovered successfully after the attacks while others struggled. Evidence is provided that layoffs after the crisis, although intended to foster recovery, instead inhibited recovery throughout the 4 years after the crisis. But, layoffs after the crisis were strongly correlated with lack of financial reserves and lack of a viable business model prior to the crisis. Digging deeper, the authors find that having a …

Disclosure Analysis For Two-Way Contingency Tables, Haibing Lu, Yingjiu Li, Xintao Wu Sep 2006

Disclosure Analysis For Two-Way Contingency Tables, Haibing Lu, Yingjiu Li, Xintao Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Disclosure analysis in two-way contingency tables is important in categorical data analysis. The disclosure analysis concerns whether a data snooper can infer any protected cell values, which contain privacy sensitive information, from available marginal totals (i.e., row sums and column sums) in a two-way contingency table. Previous research has been targeted on this problem from various perspectives. However, there is a lack of systematic definitions on the disclosure of cell values. Also, no previous study has been focused on the distribution of the cells that are subject to various types of disclosure. In this paper, we define four types of …

What Makes A Region Entrepreneurial? A Review Of The Literature, Jill S. Taylor Sep 2006

What Makes A Region Entrepreneurial? A Review Of The Literature, Jill S. Taylor

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

In recent years, there has been a growing focus on entrepreneurship as a principal source of economic growth. Many economic development practitioners and public policymakers are taking note of this, shifting attention and resources toward activities to support entrepreneurship. This reflects a broader shift toward strategies that spur growth from within (endogenous growth) rather than seeking economic gains from the outside (exogenous growth).

Introduction To The Special Issue: What We Can Learn From Large Scale Human Resources Initiatives In The Federal Government And Department Of Defense, Roni Reiter-Palmon, Michael D. Mumford, Michael A. Campion

Psychology Faculty Publications

Arguably, the government has some of the most complex and sophisticated Human Resource (HR) initiatives of any organization in the country. This is due to at least three reasons. First, the sheer size of the government requires sophisticated HR systems to manage the huge number of HR decisions required. Second, the HR systems in the government must respond to much greater external (public) scrutiny than any other organization because it is funded by government money and must be responsive to taxpayers interests and concerns. As such, fairness and defensibility are far more important factors than in other organizations. Third, the …
