The Anchor, Volume 120.11: December 6, 2006, Hope College

The Anchor: 2006

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

2d Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (Ale) Model Of Blood Flow In The Left Ventricle Of The Heart / Zati Hakim Azizul Hasan, Azizul Hasan Zati Hakim

Student Works (2000-2009)

This research is a study of the dynamics of the heart valves and the blood using numerical computational technique. This numerical technique is known as the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) and is introduced in a finite element environment. By means of a mesh movement method, the ALE uses separate sets of reference systems to study the fluid-structure interaction of the heart. The fluid domain is most conveniently described with respect to an Eulerian reference frame while a Lagrangian formulation is more appropriate for the structure domain. Due to the incompatibility factor of the two reference frames, coupling of the reference systems …

Collisions Of Red-Tailed Hawks (Buteo Jamaicensis), Turkey Vultures (Cathartes Aura), And Black Vultures (Coragyps Atratus) With Aircraft: Implications For Bird Strike Reduction, Bradley F. Blackwell, Sandra E. Wright

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

From 1990 through 2003, 52,493 wildlife collisions with aircraft were reported to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA); 97% of these incidents involved birds. The approximate cost to the civil aviation industry in the U.S.A. due to collisions of birds with aircraft (hereafter referred to as bird strikes) was $163.51 million in direct monetary losses and associated costs for the 14 year period (Cleary et al. 2004). Strikes with raptors (Falconidae and Accipitridae; including vultures, Cathartidae)accounted for approximately 28% of reported aircraft down time resulting from known-species bird strikes (known species =182942 hr; total for all birds = 244510 hr) …

Tribe V. Roland, 2002 C-4874-4886 (Blkft. Tr. Ct. App., Dec. 6, 2006), Blackfeet Appellate Court

Court Decisions

In the Blackfeet Tribal Court of Appeals, the Court reversed a lower court order which dismissed a case for lack of personal jurisdiction. The question before the Court was whether the Defendant was swept into the criminal jurisdiction of the Blackfeet tribe by reason of the “Duro-fix.” (See Duro v. Reina, 45 U.S. 676 (1990), §25 U.S.C. 1301(2), U.S. v. Lara, 541 U.S. 193 (2004), and Means v. Navajo Nation, 432 F.3d 924 (2005)).

The “Duro-fix” is an amendment to the Indian Civil Rights Act which confirmed that an Indian Tribe has “inherent power” to exercise criminal jurisdiction over all …

In-School Suspension: A Qualitative Study Of High School Programs, Joseph M. Boone Dec 2006

In-School Suspension: A Qualitative Study Of High School Programs, Joseph M. Boone

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

In-School Suspension (ISS) is the temporary placement of a student experiencing behavior problems in an alternative location within the school or school district. ISS is designed to offset the negative effects of exclusion and external suspension from school. In the ideal situation students assigned to ISS are under school supervision with an academic component provided (Stiefer, 2003).

There are various forms of ISS including: the punitive format which employs strict rule enforcement, the discussion format which includes activities designed to improve self-esteem, communication, and problem solving skills, and the academic model, which focuses on improving skills required to improve academic …

Importance Of Leadership Competencies And Content For Athletic Training Education And Practice: A Delphi Technique And National Survey, Matthew R. Kutz Dec 2006

Importance Of Leadership Competencies And Content For Athletic Training Education And Practice: A Delphi Technique And National Survey, Matthew R. Kutz

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Employers identify leadership as a desirable characteristic of athletic trainers. The Board of Certification's Role Delineation Study advocates "knowledge of leadership styles," and "preparation for leadership roles" should be a "distinguishing characteristic" of post-certification athletic training education. The athletic training literature was weak in identifying leadership competencies or content important for practice or for inclusion in athletic training education programs (ATEPs). A two phase exploratory and comparative research study was conducted using a panel of 18 athletic training experts (Phase One, Modified Delphi Technique, mixed methods) and a randomly selected sample of 161 faculty and athletic training practitioners (Phase Two, …

Evidence That Talin Alternative Splice Variants From Ciona Intestinalis Have Different Roles In Cell Adhesion, Richard H. Singiser, Richard O. Mccann Dec 2006

Evidence That Talin Alternative Splice Variants From Ciona Intestinalis Have Different Roles In Cell Adhesion, Richard H. Singiser, Richard O. Mccann

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Talins are large, modular cytoskeletal proteins found in animals and amoebozoans such as Dictyostelium discoideum. Since the identification of a second talin gene in vertebrates, it has become increasingly clear that vertebrate Talin1 and Talin2 have non-redundant roles as essential links between integrins and the actin cytoskeleton in distinct plasma membrane-associated adhesion complexes. The conserved C-terminal I/LWEQ module is important for talin function. This structural element mediates the interaction of talins with F-actin. The I/LWEQ module also targets mammalian Talin1 to focal adhesion complexes, which are dynamic multicomponent assemblies required for cell adhesion and cell motility. Although Talin1 is …

An Econometric Analysis Of Determinants Of Foreign Direct Investment: A Panel Data Study For Africa, Evarist Twimukye

All Dissertations

In the last two decades, foreign direct investment has become a major source of investment capital for developing countries. This study evaluates the determinants of foreign direct investment in Africa using fixed effects feasible generalized least squares model for 45 countries covering the period 1990-2003. The study finds gross domestic product, literacy rate, exchange rate and population size to have positive relationship with foreign direct investment. But, inflation rate and remoteness have negative relationship with foreign direct investment. Finally, central, eastern and western regions have lower foreign direct investment than southern region.

Landscape Change In The South Prong Alafia River Basin, Kimberly Sarah Koenig Dec 2006

Landscape Change In The South Prong Alafia River Basin, Kimberly Sarah Koenig

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

West-central Florida has supplied much of the national and global demand for phosphate for over 100 years. The two main tributaries of the Alafia River, the North and South Prongs, have been extensively modified by the strip mining, benefaction, and chemical processing activities associated with the phosphate mining industry. Using aerial photos, an analysis of landscape change in the South Prong Alafia River drainage basin (357.4 km2) between 1940, 1970, and 2004 was conducted. A modified Florida Land Use, Land Cover, and Forms Classification System code (FLUCCS) was used to classify and measure change through the study period. Change in …
