Acute And Chronic Methylphenidate Dose-Response Assessment On Three Adolescent Male Rat Strains, Pamela B Yang, Alan C Swann, Nachum Dafny
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Methylphenidate (MPD), commonly known as Ritalin, is the most frequently prescribed drug to treat children and adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Adolescence is a period of development involving numerous neuroplasticities throughout the central nervous system (CNS). Exposure to a psychostimulant such as MPD during this crucial period of neurodevelopment may cause transient or permanent changes in the CNS. Genetic variability may also influence these differences. Thus, the objective of the present study was to determine whether acute and chronic administration of MPD (0.6, 2.5, or 10.0mg/kg, i.p.) elicit effects among adolescent WKY, SHR, and SD rats and to …

Listeria monocytogenes is a psychrotrophic, gram-positive pathogen frequently involved in outbreaks of food-borne disease in which milk, cheese, meat, and vegetables represent the incriminated foodstuffs. L. monocytogenes biofilms formed on food contact surfaces and processing environments are the major sources of contamination to ready-to-eat food products. Nanotechnology as an emerging new technology has many biological applications. The objectives of this study were to apply immunonanoparticles, carboxyl modified nanoparticles covalently bound with anti-L. monocytogenes, for L. monocytogenes detection and inactivation. Immunonanopaticles and fluorescent immunonanoparticles were applied to indirect fluorescent immunoassay and direct fluorescent immunoassay, respectively, for sensitive detection of L. monocytogenes …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRSs) are responsible for attaching amino acids to their cognate tRNAs during protein synthesis. In eukaryotes aaRSs are commonly found in multi-enzyme complexes, although the role of these complexes is still not completely clear. Associations between aaRSs have also been reported in archaea, including a complex between prolyl-(ProRS) and leucyl-tRNA synthetases (LeuRS) in Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus that enhances tRNAPro aminoacylation. Yeast two-hybrid screens suggested that lysyl-tRNA synthetase (LysRS) also associates with LeuRS in M. thermautotrophicus. Co-purification experiments confirmed that LeuRS, LysRS, and ProRS associate in cell-free extracts. LeuRS bound LysRS and ProRS with a comparable KD …

Multiscale Structure-Function Relations Of A Tendon, Lakiesha Nicole Williams
Multiscale Structure-Function Relations Of A Tendon, Lakiesha Nicole Williams
Theses and Dissertations
In 1998, the United States National Committee on Biomechanics (USNCB) established an evolving discipline called Functional Tissue Engineering (FTE). In establishing this discipline, the goals of the USNCB were to advance FTE by increasing awareness among tissue engineers about the importance of restoring function when engineering tissue constructs. Another goal was to encourage tissue engineers to incorporate these functional criteria in the design, manufacturing and optimization of tissue engineered constructs. Based on this motivation, an investigation of the structure and mechanical properties of the rabbit patellar tendon will be executed, with the ultimate goal of creating a multiscale soft tissue …
Single-Step Treatment Of 2,4-Dinitrotoluene Via Zero-Valent Metal Reduction And Chemical Oxidation, J. Mathew Thomas
Single-Step Treatment Of 2,4-Dinitrotoluene Via Zero-Valent Metal Reduction And Chemical Oxidation, J. Mathew Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
Many nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) are considered toxic and potential carcinogens. The purpose of this study was to develop an integrated reductive/oxidative process for treating NAC contaminated waters. The process consists of the combination of zero-valent manganese or iron and a hydroxyl radical based treatment technique. Corrosion promoters were added to the contaminated water to minimize passivation of the metallic species. Water contaminated with 2,4-dinitrotoluen (DNT) was treated with the integrated process using a recirculating batch reactor. It was demonstrated that addition of corrosion promoters to the contaminated water enhanced the rate of reaction of 2,4-DNT with zero-valent iron or manganese. …

Bacterial Source Tracking Of A Watershed Impacted By Cattle Pastures, Celina Phelps
Bacterial Source Tracking Of A Watershed Impacted By Cattle Pastures, Celina Phelps
Theses and Dissertations
Pathogenic microorganisms introduced by cattle may be transported to distant locations via watershed runoff. Escherichia coli, Enterococcus spp., and Streptococcus spp. are a few species present in runoff from land impacted by humans, cattle, and wildlife. Initial data reveals that E. coli concentrations in water are greater in areas impacted by cattle than by humans. And, wildlife contributes greater concentration fluctuations than either humans or cattle. When cattle are removed from a pasture, the bacterial concentrations rapidly decrease; however, slight variations in cattle herd size do not appear to significantly influence these counts. Amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLP) and repeated-sequence …

Hyperspectral Dimensionality Reduction Via Sequential Parametric Projection Pursuits For Automated Invasive Species Target Recognition, Terrance Roshad West
Hyperspectral Dimensionality Reduction Via Sequential Parametric Projection Pursuits For Automated Invasive Species Target Recognition, Terrance Roshad West
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the use of sequential parametric projection pursuits (SPPP) for hyperspectral dimensionality reduction and invasive species target recognition. The SPPP method is implemented in a top-down fashion, where hyperspectral bands are used to form an increasing number of smaller groups, with each group being projected onto a subspace of dimensionality one. Both supervised and unsupervised potential projections are investigated for their use in the SPPP method. Fisher?s linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is used as a potential supervised projection. Average, Gaussian-weighted average, and principal component analysis (PCA) are used as potential unsupervised projections. The Bhattacharyya distance is used as …

The research conducted herein was the development and testing of a health information monitoring system for the mountain gorillas entitled Internet-supported Management Program to Assist Conservation …
Effectiveness Of Postharvest Sanitation Treatments On Microbial Load Of Blueberries, Wei-Chun Chen
Effectiveness Of Postharvest Sanitation Treatments On Microbial Load Of Blueberries, Wei-Chun Chen
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the quality and microbial load of blueberries at different maturity stages, to develop the effective microbial recovery method and to compare sanitation postharvest treatments on microbial counts of blueberries. The soluble solids and the sugar to acid ratio increased, while pH and TA decreased with maturity. Ripe berries had lower yeast and mold counts (YMC) at other maturity stages, but there were no differences on aerobic plate counts (APC). The medium pH was lower for stomaching and blending than hand massaged samples. This leads to higher recovery of microorganisms by massaging. Sodium …

Functional Role Of Recombinant Cysteine Protease On Spodoptera Frugiperda Peritrophic Matrix, Srinidi Mohan
Functional Role Of Recombinant Cysteine Protease On Spodoptera Frugiperda Peritrophic Matrix, Srinidi Mohan
Theses and Dissertations
Fall armyworm larvae (FAW), which are serious pests in the southern United States, show retarded growth when they feed on insect-resistant maize inbreds Mp704 and Mp708. These maize genotypes are not only resistant to FAW, but to a number of other lepidopteran pests. In these genotypes, a unique, extracellular, 33-KDa cysteine protease (Mir1-CP) rapidly accumulates in the whorl in response to insect feeding. Initial morphological studies on larvae feeding on resistant maize plants over-expressing the cysteine protease showed severe damage in insect?s first line of defense, the peritrophic matrix (PM). But it is not known whether the cysteine protease has …
