Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia Terminating In Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Safoorah Khalid, Salman Adil, Mohammad Khurshid

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia (WM) is a rare condition, accounting for approximately 2% of haematologic malignancies. The most common causes of death in these patients are progression of the malignant lymphoproliferative process, infection and cardiac failure. Acute leukemia is a rare event in the clinical course of WM. A number of case reports have documented the development of terminal acute leukemia in patients with WM following prolonged chemotherapy.

Screening For Cystic Fibrosis: The Importance Of Using The Correct Tools, Uzma Shah, Tariq Moatter Jan 2006

Screening For Cystic Fibrosis: The Importance Of Using The Correct Tools, Uzma Shah, Tariq Moatter

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background: Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a potentially lethal genetic disorder. The most frequent mutation worldwide in the Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) gene is designated as the Delta F508 mutation. This mutation was found in only 33% of Pakistani patients studied. Since the common Pakistani mutations remain to be identified, appropriate screening tools are required to identify disease. Sweat chloride determinations remain the gold standard for diagnosing CF. This study was done to emphasize the importance of using the correct tests.
Methods: The study was conducted at the Aga Khan University Hospital. The CFTR delta F508 mutation was tested …

M. Leprae Inhibits Apoptosis In Thp-1 Cells By Downregulation Of Bad And Bak And Upregulation Of Mcl-1 Gene Expression, Zahra Hasan, Mussarat Ashraf, Ali Tayyebi, Rabia Hussain Jan 2006

M. Leprae Inhibits Apoptosis In Thp-1 Cells By Downregulation Of Bad And Bak And Upregulation Of Mcl-1 Gene Expression, Zahra Hasan, Mussarat Ashraf, Ali Tayyebi, Rabia Hussain

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background: Virulent Mycobacterium leprae interfere with host defense mechanisms such as cytokine activation and apoptosis. The mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis is regulated by the Bcl-2 family of proteins. Expression of Fas ligand and apoptotic proteins is found in leprosy lesions and M. leprae has been shown to activate pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 genes, Bak and Bax. However, the mechanism by which M. leprae modulates apoptosis is as yet unclear. We investigated expression of apoptotic genes in THP-1 monocytes in response to infection by M. leprae and non-pathogenic M. bovis BCG.
Results: M. leprae did not induce apoptosis in THP-1 cells, while BCG …

Extra Pulmonary Uptake Of Tc-99m-Maa Perfusion Lung Scan As A Result Of Right To Left Intra Cardiac Shunt, Riffat Hussain, Maseeh-Uz-Zaman, Sohail Abrar Khan, M Nadeem Ahmad Jan 2006

Extra Pulmonary Uptake Of Tc-99m-Maa Perfusion Lung Scan As A Result Of Right To Left Intra Cardiac Shunt, Riffat Hussain, Maseeh-Uz-Zaman, Sohail Abrar Khan, M Nadeem Ahmad

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Extra pulmonary accumulation of Tc-99m-macroaggregate of albumin (MAA) is rarely seen on perfusion lung scan, and has been reported in less than 4% of a study population of nearly 380 patients1. It occurs when the agent bypasses the lungs due to a right to left (R-L) cardiac or pulmonary shunt, when it is shunted to the portal vein before reaching the right atrium and ventricle of the heart, and when the agent is degraded to a submicron particle size.2 When a pharmaceutical problem is excluded, extra-pulmonary uptake implies unusual hemodynamics with a shunt.

Child-Centred Environments To Limit Early Aggression (Childhood Aggression Prevention (Cap) Project) Progress Report: Presented To The Western Australian Health Promotion Foundation, Child Health Promotion Research Centre, Edith Cowan University Jan 2006

Child-Centred Environments To Limit Early Aggression (Childhood Aggression Prevention (Cap) Project) Progress Report: Presented To The Western Australian Health Promotion Foundation, Child Health Promotion Research Centre, Edith Cowan University

Research outputs pre 2011

A growing body of evidence indicates that early intervention may be most effective in preventing the high health and social costs of violence, victimisation, and other outcomes of aggression. The Childhood Aggression Prevention (CAP) Project is a trial of a new classroom-based intervention designed to prevent problems associated with aggression and other problem behaviours in early-primary years students. The intervention was developed through a review of established and previously-evaluated programs with similar aims and through a formative study conducted previously by the Child Health Promotion Research Centre. The CAP Project aims to reduce overt physical and verbal aggression, but also …

“The War On Terror Begins At Home” The Impact Of Domestic Violence Policy On Homicide Rates In The United States, Jami L. Myers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examines state domestic violence policies and their affect on state domestic homicide rates. This research builds on the literature in the area of policy strength and its impact on policy implementers, specifically examining seven of the domestic violence policies recommended by the 1994 and 2000 Violence against Women Acts. Policies were categorized as "coercive," "hortatory," or "catalytic" and data were collected from all fifty states and the District of Columbia. Descriptive statistics are used to determine the effectiveness of the policies on the probability that a state would fall above or below the average national domestic homicide rate …

Effects Of Substrate And Temperature On Growth Of Aspergillus Flavus In Peanuts From Georgia, Premila Achar, Andres Sachez Jan 2006

Effects Of Substrate And Temperature On Growth Of Aspergillus Flavus In Peanuts From Georgia, Premila Achar, Andres Sachez

Faculty Articles

We investigated the effects of different substrates (potato dextrose agar [PDA], nutrient agar [NA], and corn meal agar [CMA]) and temperatures on growth and aflatoxin production in Aspergillus flavus. Contaminated peanuts from retailers at different locations in Georgia were used throughout the experiment and 200 seeds were selected from each sample. PDA, NA, and CMA served as the substrate to express the mold from the contaminated seeds. Seeds were plated equidistantly on each of the media and incubated at 10° C, 27° C, 30° C, and 37° C, respectively. Seeds incubated on moist filter paper served as control. Neither growth …

Environmental Management Information Systems (Emis) For Sustainable Development: A Conceptual Overview, Omar F. El-Gayar, Brian D. Fritz Jan 2006

Environmental Management Information Systems (Emis) For Sustainable Development: A Conceptual Overview, Omar F. El-Gayar, Brian D. Fritz

Research & Publications

Environmental management information systems (EMIS) is defined as 'organizational-technical systems for systematically obtaining, processing, and making available relevant environmental information available in companies'. Such systems evolved out of a growing need to manage environmental information in response to internal and external pressures such as regulations, consumers, stockholders, and changes in the business environments. While over the past decade EMIS have proliferated in the corporate landscape, these systems have received little attention within the information systems research community as whole. The objective of this paper is to serve as a tutorial providing a conceptual overview of EMIS, highlighting organizational and technical …
