The Analysis And Characterisation Of Rotavirus And Norovirus Circulating In The South Of Ireland, Norma Reidy Jan 2006

The Analysis And Characterisation Of Rotavirus And Norovirus Circulating In The South Of Ireland, Norma Reidy

Theses

On average more than 3,000 cases of rotavirus diarrhea are detected annually amongst Irish children less than 3 years of age. Rotavirus disease occurs mainly during the winter months, with peak infections detected from February to April. The symptoms of disease are diarrhea and dehydration, with 80% of patients requiring hospitalisation, The mean duration of hospitalisation is 3-4 days, with an average cost per day of €409. Eighteen percent of infections were detected in infants less than 6 months of age, suggesting inadequate maternal derived protection from existing strains, or the existence of novel strains in Ireland with little or …

The Development Of Functional Food Ingredients From Yeast Cell Wall Beta Glucans, Susan Keogh Jan 2006

The Development Of Functional Food Ingredients From Yeast Cell Wall Beta Glucans, Susan Keogh

Theses

The intracellular contents of spent yeast can be used to produce flavours and flavour enhancers. However there still remains after this process, a significant quantity of cell wall material, which makes up 20-25% of the dry weight of yeast biomass. A major component of the yeast cell wall is the polysaccharide P-glucan. This project involved the investigation of the extraction and characterisation of p-glucan as well as its evaluation as a functional food ingredient. A preparation of spent yeast p-glucan was obtained from two types of spent yeast species, Saccharomyces cervisiae (brewers yeast) and Kluyveromyces marxianus (dairy yeast) obtained from …

3,3′-Diindolylmethane And Paclitaxel Act Synergistically To Promote Apoptosis In Her2/Neu Human Breast Cancer Cells, Kandace P. Mcguire, N. Ngoubilly, M. Neavyn, Susan Lanza-Jacoby Jan 2006

3,3′-Diindolylmethane And Paclitaxel Act Synergistically To Promote Apoptosis In Her2/Neu Human Breast Cancer Cells, Kandace P. Mcguire, N. Ngoubilly, M. Neavyn, Susan Lanza-Jacoby

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

Background. HER2/neu positive breast tumors are difficult to treat. About 25 to 30% of invasive breast tumors overexpress the HER2/neu oncogene. These tumors are aggressive and become resistant to chemotherapeutic drugs. 3,3′-diindolylmethane (DIM), the active metabolite of indole-3-carbinol, a naturally occurring compound found in cruciferous vegetables, has been found to have anti-cancer properties in both humans and animals. DIM has been shown to induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in animal breast cancer models. Because HER2/neu overexpression confers resistance to paclitaxel, and DIM has anti-tumor effects, we hypothesized that DIM will enhance the cytotoxic effects of paclitaxel, a common …

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is present in over 90% of the world's population. This infection is considered benign, even though in limited cases EBV is associated with infectious and neoplastic conditions. Over the past decade, the EBV association with breast cancer has been constantly debated. Adding to this clinical and biological uncertainty, different techniques gave contradictory results for the presence of EBV in breast carcinoma specimens. In this study, minor groove binding (MGB)-TaqMan real time PCR was used to detect the presence of EBV DNA in both peripheral blood and tumor samples of selected patients. METHODS: Peripheral blood and breast …

Till Death Do Us Part: Marriage, Hiv/Aids And The Law In Zimbabwe, Slyvia Chirawu Jan 2006

Till Death Do Us Part: Marriage, Hiv/Aids And The Law In Zimbabwe, Slyvia Chirawu

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that marriage, cultural practices, and legal frameworks in Zimbabwe disproportionately expose women to HIV/AIDS, with marriage paradoxically increasing their vulnerability despite societal expectations of protection. It contends that legal reforms alone are insufficient to address this issue, emphasizing the need for transformative gender equity to challenge the deeply rooted power imbalances and cultural norms that perpetuate women's susceptibility to HIV infection.

Constitutional Lessons For The Next Generation Of Public Single-Sex Elementary And Secondary Schools, Kimberly J. Robinson Jan 2006

Constitutional Lessons For The Next Generation Of Public Single-Sex Elementary And Secondary Schools, Kimberly J. Robinson

Law Faculty Publications

Single-sex public elementary and secondary schools are making a comeback. School districts are structuring these schools in a variety of ways, including by providing a single-sex public school for only one sex or by offering single-sex schools for both sexes. These disparate structures of single-sex schools create distinct potential harms, risks, and benefits for students. This Article contends that the constitutional framework applied to single-sex schools should be systematically modified to recognize the different potential harms, risks, and benefits of these single-sex schools in a manner that will create optimal conditions for creating single-sex public schools. The proposed modifications address …

The False Dichotomy Of Rape Trauma Syndrome, Holly Hogan Jan 2006

The False Dichotomy Of Rape Trauma Syndrome, Holly Hogan

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article critiques the legal system's distinction between offensive and defensive uses of Rape Trauma Syndrome (RTS) testimony, arguing that this dichotomy is flawed. It contends that even testimony categorized as defensive often functions offensively by influencing the jury's perception of the victim's credibility. The article proposes a functional approach to evaluating RTS testimony, focusing on whether it vouches for the victim's credibility or explains counterintuitive behaviors, rather than adhering to the formal offensive/defensive framework.

The Tale Of Two Systems: How Integrated Divorce Laws Can Remedy The Unintended Effects Of Pure No-Fault Divorce, Karen Turnage Boyd Jan 2006

The Tale Of Two Systems: How Integrated Divorce Laws Can Remedy The Unintended Effects Of Pure No-Fault Divorce, Karen Turnage Boyd

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article critiques the unintended consequences of pure no-fault divorce laws, arguing that they fail to protect the economic and emotional well-being of innocent spouses, particularly women and homemakers. It advocates for an integrated divorce system that combines fault and no-fault grounds, using Georgia's approach as a model. This hybrid system would allow courts to consider fault in property distribution and spousal support, providing greater protections for vulnerable parties while maintaining the flexibility of no-fault divorce.

What's The Hold-Up? Making The Case For Lifetime Orders Of Protection In New York State, Jennifer Rios Jan 2006

What's The Hold-Up? Making The Case For Lifetime Orders Of Protection In New York State, Jennifer Rios

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note advocates for the implementation of lifetime or extended orders of protection in New York State to better safeguard domestic violence victims. It highlights the limitations of the current legal framework, which requires victims to repeatedly seek renewals of protective orders, and argues that longer or indefinite orders would reduce trauma and enhance safety. The analysis draws on comparative examples from states like New Jersey and California to support its proposal for stronger legal measures.

Abstract

Background

Chronic inflammation and autoimmunity likely contribute to the pathogenesis of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). The aim of this study was to investigate the role of autoimmunity in the etiology of AAAs using a genetic association study approach with HLA polymorphisms.

Methods

HLA-DQA1, -DQB1, -DRB1 and -DRB3-5 alleles were determined in 387 AAA cases (180 Belgian and 207 Canadian) and 426 controls (269 Belgian and 157 Canadian) by a PCR and single-strand oligonucleotide probe hybridization assay.

Results

We observed a potential association with the HLA-DQA1 locus among Belgian males (empirical p = 0.027, asymptotic p = 0.071). Specifically, there …

Community Reactions To Campaigns Addressing Crystal Methamphetamine Use Among Gay And Bisexual Men In New York City, Jose Nanín, Jeffrey T. Parsons, David S. Bimbi, Christian Grov, Justin T. Brown

Publications and Research

Crystal methamphetamine (aka “crystal meth”) use with high-risk sex has become an emerging health problem for gay and bisexual men in New York City since the late 1990s. Public health campaigns were eventually developed to encourage gay and bisexual men to avoid or reconsider using crystal meth. Reactions to three campaigns were measured with a cross-sectional survey administered in 2004. Among an ethnically-diverse sample of 971 gay and bisexual men, 61.8% reported seeing the campaigns. Those who reported ever using crystal meth, recent use, and recent use with sex were significantly more likely to have seen the campaigns. In …

A Tuberculosis Contact Investigation Involving Two Private Nursing Homes In Inner Western Sydney In 2004, Bradley Forssman, Leena Gupta, Kay Mills

Medical Papers and Journal Articles

Australia has one of the lowest incidence rates of tuberculosis (TB) in the world, approximately five per 100,000 per year 1, although in some parts of the country the incidence is considerably higher. In the former Central Sydney Area Health Service the incidence rate in 2003 was 14 per 100,000 per year.2 The incidence is also higher in those aged 65 years and over1, a population that has declining immunocompetence due to a variety of factors.3 Furthermore, the subpopulation of this group (and, indeed, of people of any age) living in residential institutions such as nursing homes and hostels are …
