Baseline Household Survey: Dadu District, Pakistan Initiative For Mothers And Newborns (Paiman)

Reproductive Health

The Pakistan Initiative for Mothers and Newborns (PAIMAN) is a five-year project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). PAIMAN is committed to assisting the Government of Pakistan in implementing the full spectrum of interventions necessary to address maternal and neonatal health issues. USAID has provided a grant to implement PAIMAN in ten districts of Pakistan’s four provinces. The goal of the project is to reduce maternal, newborn, and child mortality. The project calls for a multipronged and integrated strategic approach combining individual health care with public health and community-based interventions. To ensure that success is properly …

The Taxation Of Income Available For Discretionary Use, Deborah A. Geier Jan 2006

The Taxation Of Income Available For Discretionary Use, Deborah A. Geier

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

The signature tax policy tension of the last two decades (at least) has been whether the federal tax base ought to reach income or only consumption. At the individual level, the current Internal Revenue Code (payroll taxes aside) incorporates an income tax base with numerous consumption tax components - provisions that allow either immediate deduction of a non-consumption capital expenditure (as under a cash-flow consumption tax), such as qualified pension plan and IRA savings, or exclusion of the returns to capital (as under a wage tax), such as the exclusion for home sale gain and Section 103 interest. Primary Repair Of An Esophageal Rupture Using Pleural Flap, Saulat H. Fatimi, Sadaf Sheikh, Asif Anwar Ali Jan 2006

Primary Repair Of An Esophageal Rupture Using Pleural Flap, Saulat H. Fatimi, Sadaf Sheikh, Asif Anwar Ali

Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery

Esophageal perforation remains an important thoracic emergency. Aggressive operative therapy remains the mainstay for treatment. A case of esophageal perforation, consequent upon impacted food bolus, is presented. An 80 years old female, with multiple comorbidities, presented with dysphagia and right sided chest pain, who had a distal esophageal tear, secondary to accidental meat ball ingestion. Rigid esophagoscopy showed complete occlusion of the distal esophagus with a meat ball. Right thoracotomy was performed, which showed perforated esophagus with large meat ball protruding from it. Endoscopic removal of the food particles was done, and the rupture was repaired using a pleural flap. …

Aspergilloma In A Patient With No Previous History Of Chronic Lung Disease, Sadaf Sheikh, Saulat H. Fatimi

Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery

Patients with aspergilloma should undergo surgical treatment, because there is a risk of sudden life threatening hemoptysis and because there is no effective alternate medical therapy. We report a case of aspergilloma in a 47 year old man with no past history of tuberculosis presented with the complaint of hemoptysis for two weeks. It was diagnosed radiologically and treated with left upper lobectomy. Post operative course was complicated by cardiorhythmic disorder.

Survey On Study Abroad: Data From 600 Unf Freshmen, Emma Glencross, Lisa E. Wills

All Volumes (2001-2008)

In light of the known benefits and the increasing importance of an international study experience, the UNF International Center has been investigating and offering more opportunities for Study Abroad. In the fall of 2004, the Director of the International Center, Dr. Tim Robinson, wished to investigate the level of interest of UNF freshman and sophomore students in studying abroad. He had the idea of conducting a survey to learn more about their previous experiences abroad and their attitudes towards Study Abroad Courses. Dominik Güss and Emma Glencross developed a first draft of the survey. Upon modification, a final survey was …

Federal Funds Target Rate Changes And Sector Equity Returns, Michael King, Scott Martin Jan 2006

Federal Funds Target Rate Changes And Sector Equity Returns, Michael King, Scott Martin

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The purpose of this paper is to investigate how equities of nine individual economic sectors are affected when monetary policy announcements in the form of federal funds rate changes are made over the period January 1, 1999 to May 11, 2005. This sector-analysis is conducted over a recent time period, when the Federal Open Market Committee has adopted a policy of immediate disclosure of its federal funds target rate changes. Our results indicate that the Consumer Discretionary and Technology sectors’ equity returns are negatively and significantly related to changes in the federal funds target rate. This negative relationship appears to …

Isokinetic Hamstring: Quadriceps Strength Ratio In Males And Females: Implications For Acl Injury, Meghan Eileen Lyons Jan 2006

Isokinetic Hamstring: Quadriceps Strength Ratio In Males And Females: Implications For Acl Injury, Meghan Eileen Lyons

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Although high rates of ACL injuries are seen in contact sports, the majority of injuries occur as a result of a no contact mechanism. The mechanism causing this injury usually falls into one of three categories: planting and cutting, straight knee landing, and one-step stop landing with the knee in hyperextension. Depending on the specific parameters of the group assessed, female athletes are two to eight times more likely to tear the ACL in one of these motions than are male athletes. Numerous studies focusing on different sports at various levels have shown similar trends, demanding that attention be paid …

Emotions And Actions Associated With Altruistic Helping And Punishment, Omar Tonsi Eldakar, David Sloan Wilson, Rick O'Gorman Jan 2006

Emotions And Actions Associated With Altruistic Helping And Punishment, Omar Tonsi Eldakar, David Sloan Wilson, Rick O'Gorman

Biology Faculty Articles

Evolutionary altruism (defined in terms of fitness effects) exists in the context of punishment in addition to helping. We examine the proximate psychological mechanisms that motivate altruistic helping and punishment, including the effects of genetic relatedness, potential for future interactions, and individual differences in propensity to help and punish. A cheater who is a genetic relative provokes a stronger emotional reaction than a cheater who is a stranger, but the behavioral response is modulated to avoid making the transgression public in the case of cheating relatives. Numerous behavioral differences are not accompanied by emotional differences, suggesting that other psychological mechanisms …

A Strategy For Developing Stationary Biodiesel Generation, Karl R. Rábago Jan 2006

A Strategy For Developing Stationary Biodiesel Generation, Karl R. Rábago

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This paper discusses the drivers of change in the electricity system and the opportunities presented for biodiesel electric generation in this context. This paper also introduces the primary issues facing increased utilization of biodiesel—both those that challenge increased use of the fuel and those that support this use. Finally, the paper presents key elements of a strategy for realizing the potential of an electric generation infrastructure that incorporates more distributed biodiesel generation in the near term and even more distributed energy resources over the longer term.

Energy Efficiency: The Best Immediate Option For A Secure, Clean, Healthy Future, Richard L. Ottinger

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The imperatives for reducing the world’s dependence on fossil and nuclear fuels have multiplied manifold in recent years with the advent of worldwide terrorism. These new dangers come in addition to the imperatives of addressing the dire consequences of global warming and devastating pollution that accompany the use of these fossil fuels. Reducing dependence on these unsafe and unreliable energy resources should be a top global priority. Implementation of proven energy efficiency technologies offers the world the fastest, safest, most economic and most environmentally benign way to alleviate these threats. This article outlines available efficiency measures, their economic advantages and …

A User-Friendly System To Measure Electromyographic Activity Of Dancers, Jianhua Zhou Jan 2006

A User-Friendly System To Measure Electromyographic Activity Of Dancers, Jianhua Zhou

Master's Theses and Capstones

A data acquisition system aided by virtual instrumentation was developed to measure electromyographic activity of the dancers. The system is composed of three main components: (1) Analog front-end with signal conditioning, (2) USB serial interface based A/D conversion, and (3) virtual instrumentation designed in LabView tools. The proposed system is able to accurately collect the magnitude of jump force and displayed the data using virtual instruments with alarm functions. The signal path is well-conditioned and processed, which makes the device suitable for feasibility studies for future research.

The Effect Of Air Pollution And Time Spent Outdoors On Pulmonary Function In A Diverse New England Population, Thomas Daniel Lambert Jan 2006

The Effect Of Air Pollution And Time Spent Outdoors On Pulmonary Function In A Diverse New England Population, Thomas Daniel Lambert

Master's Theses and Capstones

Outdoor air pollution has been associated with declines in pulmonary function. We collected daily pulmonary function measures from 165 participants in New England during July and August, 2004 and compared these measures to outdoor air pollution using single and multiple pollutant models. Increases of 10mug/m3 PM2.5, 10 ppb O3, and 1 ppb NO2 were associated with -1.29%, -0.54%, and -0.151 % changes in FEV1 of asthmatic participants spending more than 5 hours outdoors, respectively. Effects for non-asthmatic and all participants spending less than 5 hours outdoors were near zero and not significant. There was also evidence indicating that the largest …

Mhc (B) Complex Recombinant Immune Response, Nicole Gay Wilkinson Jan 2006

Mhc (B) Complex Recombinant Immune Response, Nicole Gay Wilkinson

Master's Theses and Capstones

Recombination between chicken major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I B-F and class IV B-G genes has enabled more precise identification of genes controlling immune responses. Congenic lines, each containing a unique MHC recombinant, were developed with 99.9% genetic uniformity to inbred Line UCD 003 (B17B17). A new recombinant, R13 (BF17-BG23), originated in the tenth backcross generation for R1 (BF24-BG23). Two experiments tested the R13 immune response to bovine red blood .cells (BRBC) and Rous sarcoma virus (RSV).

A single R13B17 sire mated to five R131317 dams produced progeny segregating for R13R13, R13B17, and B17B17 genotypes. These progeny were injected with …

Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium Promotes Apoptosis In Activated Neutrophils, Christopher C. Wrocklage Jan 2006

Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium Promotes Apoptosis In Activated Neutrophils, Christopher C. Wrocklage

Master's Theses and Capstones

Apoptosis is an extremely important and highly regulated function in neutrophils. As the most abundant, but shortest-lived white blood cells, they must initiate this process in the absence of pathogens and selectively release their potent cytotoxic components when pathogens are present. Many pathogens are able to modulate this process in neutrophils, either for the host's benefit or for their own. Previous work has shown that transmigration across a T84 intestinal epithelial crypt cell monolayer increases the ability of neutrophils to bind and kill Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium).

The goal of this work was to see how S. Typhimurium …

A Comparison Of The First Fifty Words Of Typically Developing Children To The First Fifty Words Of Typically Developing Children Exposed To Manual Communication, Emily Woodacre Jan 2006

A Comparison Of The First Fifty Words Of Typically Developing Children To The First Fifty Words Of Typically Developing Children Exposed To Manual Communication, Emily Woodacre

Master's Theses and Capstones

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the role of manual communication in the acquisition of the first 50 spoken words in typically-developing children. It was hypothesized that typically-developing children exposed to manual communication would have a different composition of their first 50 words compared to typically-developing children not exposed to manual communication. More specifically a greater portion of dual-functioning words and action words were predicted as a result of the visual and motor aspects of gestures and manual communication.

Twelve participants who were enrolled in a six-week baby-sign playgroup were involved in the study. Parents recorded their …

The Contributions Of Murine Kc And Mip-2 In Hemorrhage Induced Neutrophil Priming For Acute Lung Injury Following Subsequent Septic Challenge, Joanne Lomas-Neira Jan 2006

The Contributions Of Murine Kc And Mip-2 In Hemorrhage Induced Neutrophil Priming For Acute Lung Injury Following Subsequent Septic Challenge, Joanne Lomas-Neira

Open Access Dissertations

Trauma patients represent a significant risk for the development of ALI following exposure to a secondary infectious challenge. This risk is suggested to be associated with an event that "primes" certain members of the immune cell population such that a subsequent/secondary challenge elicits a dys-functional response. Characteristics of ALI are neutrophil sequestration in the lung, delayed neutrophil apoptosis and increased pro-inflammatory cytokines. Chemokines are proteins produced by immune and resident tissue cells in response to inflammation and function as regulators of neutrophil trafficking and cytolytic activity. Keratinocyte-derived chemokine (KC) and macrophage inflammatory protein-2 (MIP-2) are mouse homologues of human neutrophil …
