Effect Of Risk Factors On Functional Outcome After Stroke Rehabilitation, Mahmoud E. Nazzal, Mohammed A. Saadah, Suad M. Trebinjac, Omar A. Al-Awadi, Khalid A. Al-Shamsi

Neurosciences

OBJECTIVE: The incidence of stroke and the demand for rehabilitation services continues to increase. Risk factors may act as stroke outcome predictors and hence determine the type and intensity of rehabilitation. Our aim is to investigate stroke outcome predictors that will define groups with maximal or minimal benefit from rehabilitation after stroke. METHODS: Our longitudinal prospective study included 111 ischemic stroke patients, admitted consecutively to the Rehabilitation Department, Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar, during 2000-2001. We analyzed the influence of modifiable risk factors: diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension (HTN), ischemic heart disease (IHD) and non-modifiable factors: age, gender, race and side of …

Do Road Traffic Accidents Increase During The Fasting Month Of Ramadan, Muhammad R. Khammash, Tamer F. Al-Shouha

Neurosciences

OBJECTIVE: During Ramadan, adult Muslims stop eating and drinking during the daytime. Fasting may cause physiological habitual and behavioral changes that may cause an increase in the rate of road traffic accidents (RTA) during Ramadan. The aim of this study was to see whether there is a real increase in the rate and severity of patients treated secondary to RTA during Ramadan. METHODS: We enrolled all patients treated secondary to RTA in the Accident and Emergency Department of Princess Basma Teaching Hospital, Irbid, Jordan, during the period October 1st to November 30th 2004 in the study. The Ramadan period was …

Prescribing Morality: The Constitutionality Of Pharmacist Conscience Clauses, Taylor Genovese Jan 2006

Prescribing Morality: The Constitutionality Of Pharmacist Conscience Clauses, Taylor Genovese

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Health provider "conscience clauses" were first enacted in response to the United States Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade and were specifically related to religious or moral objections to abortion. Generally, today's conscience clauses go well beyond the issue of abortion and provide "varying" levels of legal protection for health providers who refuse to perform services that are against their religious or moral beliefs.

This Note argues that legislation that provides an absolute right for pharmacists to refuse to fill valid prescriptions based on the pharmacist's religious or moral beliefs threatens the constitutionally protected right to access contraceptives if …

Amicus Brief Of Constitutional Law Professors David L. Faigman And Ashutosh A. Bhagwat, Et Al. In The Case Of Gonzales V. Carhart, David L. Faigman, Ashutosh A. Bhagwat, Kathrny Davis

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

This is an amici curiae brief submitted to the United States Supreme Court in the Gonzales v. Carhart and Gonzales v. Planned Parenthood cases (i.e., the partialbirth abortion cases) argued during the October, 2006 Term. The question the brief addresses is whether the Supreme Court should defer to congressional findings of fact, when the factual questions at issue help to determine the scope of a basic, constitutional right. The argument presented in the brief is as follows:

The question of what level of deference is owed legislative findings of fact in constitutional litigation is not new. It divided the Court …

Regulating Access To Databases Through Antitrust Law, Daryl Lim Jan 2006

Regulating Access To Databases Through Antitrust Law, Daryl Lim

Faculty Scholarly Works

It is largely uncontroversial that the “creative” effort in a database will be protected by copyright. However, any effort to extend protection to purely factual databases creates difficulties in determining the proper method and scope of protection. This Paper argues that antitrust law can be used to supplement intellectual property law in maintaining the “access-incentive” balance with respect to databases. It starts from the premise that a trend toward “TRIPs-plus” rights in databases, whatever its form, is inevitable. The reason is a simple, but compelling one: business needs shape the law. Various means of database access regulation are explored and …

Challenges To Education In Tajikistan: The Need For Research-Based Solutions, Sarfaroz Niyozov, Stephen Bahry

Book Chapters / Conference Papers

Education in Tajikistan today is acknowledged by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Tajikistan and by international agencies as facing many challenges. Infrastructure and materials need replacement or repair; curriculum needs to be adapted to changing conditions; professional development for teachers is required, while means to retain experienced teachers and attract new ones need to be found. At the same time, children's' meaningful access to education has been threatened by various factors that reduce their attendance and participation in education, keeping some youth out of school altogether. This chapter argues that research in education in Tajikistan and the …

Clark County School District Attitudes, Perceptions, Barriers, And Desires For Field Trip Experiences, Allison Brody Jan 2006

Clark County School District Attitudes, Perceptions, Barriers, And Desires For Field Trip Experiences, Allison Brody

Education about the Environment

Field trip opportunities are plentiful throughout Clark County, Nevada, including museums, parks, and designated locations within the nearly seven million acres of public lands surrounding the Las Vegas metropolitan area. The majority of these field trip destinations, which this paper will refer to as Informal Education (IE) sites, have education teams that can create and deliver programs and/or tours for classes. Many also offer professional development opportunities for teachers. Although the IE sites are rich in natural and cultural resources and provide abundant opportunities for authentic learning experiences, teachers may not think of some of the sites as prime destinations …

Finicky Fish Finish... Last! Pre-Visit Lessons -- Support Materials (Grade 5), Discover Mojave: Forever Earth

Curriculum materials (FE)

In “Finicky Fish Finish…Last!” students explore what has happened to the Colorado River and the reasons why it is so difficult for the razorback sucker to thrive in a changed environment. Working as ichthyologists (fish biologists) at Lake Mead, students collect water quality data such as temperature, pH, and clarity -- to determine whether current habitat conditions are sufficient for survival of young razorback suckers. Students observe and identify non-native fish in Lake Mead as they learn how the razorback sucker interacts with these neighbors. Students assess whether Lake Mead is still a good habitat for razorback suckers. Using the …
