Effectiveness Of Asynchronous Reference Services For Distance Learning Students Within Florida's Community College System, Patricia C. Profeta Jan 2006

Effectiveness Of Asynchronous Reference Services For Distance Learning Students Within Florida's Community College System, Patricia C. Profeta

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The impact of distance learning on higher education and the need to provide equitable library services to students in the digital environment emerged as critical areas during the 1990s. Library services available to distance learning students included digital reference and instructional services, remote access to online research tools, database and research tutorials, interlibrary loan, and document delivery. Digital reference services appeared to be one of the more significant services proffered by academic libraries although these services were developed often without forethought to goals and assessment. The purpose of this study was to examine the adequacy of asynchronous e-mail reference services …

Unblighting The Burbs: Renewing The Edges, Mateusz Perkowski Jan 2006

Unblighting The Burbs: Renewing The Edges, Mateusz Perkowski

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

The term “urban blight” conjures up images of the stereotypical devastated American inner city: drunks and drug addicts sitting against graffiti-splattered walls, decaying buildings with broken windows that nobody bothers to replace, and alleyways layered with decades of discarded liquor bottles and other debris symptomatic of poverty and hopelessness. “Urban renewal,” which federal, state and local governments have used to combat blight since middle of the 20th Century, has itself become a phrase loaded with negative connotations, because many efforts to improve “slums” only ended up aggravating poor neighborhoods’ problems with crime and economic dysfunction. “Urban blight” and “urban renewal” …

Planning In The Portland Metropolitan Area After Measure 37, Ted Reid Jan 2006

Planning In The Portland Metropolitan Area After Measure 37, Ted Reid

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

Created in the aftermath of Measure 37, the Russill Fellowship is aimed at examining non-regulatory land use planning tools and their potential application in the Portland Metropolitan area, with a particular emphasis on habitat conservation. The above-mentioned ballot initiative and the larger private property rights movement have given an indication that Oregon voters perceive inequities in the State’s land use planning system. It is also clear that Oregonians still place a high value on the conservation of our state’s natural resources. According to a March, 2005 statewide survey, protecting farmland for farming is very important to 67% of respondents, protecting …

Fluorescent Analysis Of Translesion Dna Synthesis By Using A Novel, Non-Natural Nucleotide Analogue, Irene Lee, Anthony J. Berdis Jan 2006

Fluorescent Analysis Of Translesion Dna Synthesis By Using A Novel, Non-Natural Nucleotide Analogue, Irene Lee, Anthony J. Berdis

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The replication of damaged DNA is a promutagenic process that can lead to disease development. This report evaluates the dynamics of nucleotide incorporation opposite an abasic site, a commonly formed DNA lesion, by using two fluorescent nucleotide analogues, 2-aminopurine deoxyribose triphosphate (2-APTP) and 5-phenylindole deoxyribose triphosphate (5-PhITP). In both cases, the kinetics of incorporation were compared by using a 32 P-radiolabel extension assay versus a fluorescence-quenching assay. Although 2-APTP is efficiently incorporated opposite a templating nucleobase (thymine), the kinetics for incorporation opposite an abasic site are significantly slower. The lower catalytic efficiency hinders its use as a probe to study …

Recent Developments Inthe Mechanistic Enzymology Of The Atp-Dependent Lon Protease From Escherichia Coli: Highlights From Kinetic Studies, Irene Lee, Anthony J. Berdis, Carolyn K. Suzuki Jan 2006

Recent Developments Inthe Mechanistic Enzymology Of The Atp-Dependent Lon Protease From Escherichia Coli: Highlights From Kinetic Studies, Irene Lee, Anthony J. Berdis, Carolyn K. Suzuki

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Lon protease, also known as protease La, is one of the simplest ATP-dependent proteases that plays vital roles in maintaining cellular functions by selectively eliminating misfolded, damaged and certain short-lived regulatory proteins. Although Lon is a homo-oligomer, each subunit of Lon contains both an ATPase and a protease active site. This relatively simple architecture compared to other hetero-oligomeric ATP-dependent proteases such as the proteasome makes Lon a useful paradigm for studying the mechanism of ATP-dependent proteolysis. In this article, we survey some recent developments in the mechanistic characterization of Lon with an emphasis on the utilization of pre-steady-state enzyme kinetic …

Top-10 Positional-Release Therapy Techniques To Break The Chain Of Pain: Part 2, Timothy E. Speicher, David O. Draper Jan 2006

Top-10 Positional-Release Therapy Techniques To Break The Chain Of Pain: Part 2, Timothy E. Speicher, David O. Draper

All PTHMS Faculty Publications

Positional-Release Therapy (PRT) is advocated as an effective indirect therapeutic treatment for acute, subacute, and chronic somatic dysfunction. Initial investigations have shown PRT to significantly reduce low back and hip pain and improve hip strength. The effects of PRT are thought to occur from placing a patient’s tissues in a position of comfort for an extended period of time.

Clinically, the practice of PRT and its therapeutic benefits have an established history. What is lacking is research into the neural and physiologic mechanisms of the process by which PRT alleviates somatic dysfunction. It can be tempting to view the technique …

Race, Media Consolidation, And Online Content: The Lack Of Substitutes Available To Media Consumers Of Color, Leonard M. Baynes Jan 2006

Race, Media Consolidation, And Online Content: The Lack Of Substitutes Available To Media Consumers Of Color, Leonard M. Baynes

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

In its 2003 media ownership proceedings, the FCC relied on the existence of the Internet to provide justification for radically relaxing the FCC ownership rules. These rules limited the national audience reach of the broadcast licensees and the cross-ownership of different media properties by broadcasters and newspapers. In relaxing these rules, the FCC failed to recognize that a media submarket for African Americans and Latinos/as existed. This separate market is evidenced by the different television viewing habits of African Americans and Latinos/as as compared to Whites and Billboard magazine's delineation of R&B/urban music radio stations as a separate radio station …

A Study Of The Relationships Between Superintendent Longevity, Board Member Longevity, Board Member Training, And School Districts Demonstrating Adequate Yearly Progress (Ayp) During The 2004-2005 School Year, Edward Maritz Jr. Jan 2006

A Study Of The Relationships Between Superintendent Longevity, Board Member Longevity, Board Member Training, And School Districts Demonstrating Adequate Yearly Progress (Ayp) During The 2004-2005 School Year, Edward Maritz Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Expectations for school districts and educators are high; and expectations for those governing schools are even higher yet. NCLB poses a substantial challenge to those governing school districts: all students must be 100% proficient in language arts and mathematics by 2014. In the face of the demands of the standards movement and the increased accountability placed upon those governing schools, school board members need to know if the research base has identified any characteristics to their service on school boards that can be found to have a correlation to improving the effectiveness of their school districts. This study employed correlation …

The Ambiguous Meaning Of Human Conception, Philip G. Peters Jr. Jan 2006

The Ambiguous Meaning Of Human Conception, Philip G. Peters Jr.

Faculty Publications

Nearly all of the state and federal laws that treat embryos as persons contain a fundamental ambiguity. Contrary to common belief, there is no "moment" of conception. Instead, conception is a forty-eight hour process, during which the haploid genomes of the sperm and egg are gradually and precisely transformed into the functioning diploid genome of a new human embryo. During that two-day period, many common clinical and laboratories activities take place, including the culling of unsuitable embryos, the freezing of others, and the testing of embryos for genetic abnormalities. The legal status of these activities will turn on the point …

This article examines significant developments in the Supreme Court's privacy rights jurisprudence through the Rehnquist era with a look ahead toward the future of privacy and liberty protections under a new Court. The article explores several problems faced by privacy rights proponents, ranging from opposition to unenumerated constitutional rights generally to more recent tradition-based challenges to privacy protections. Tracing the historic roots of privacy rights, the article reveals the original intent of the Constitution's drafters to establish an evolving constitution with inalienable unenumerated individual rights, including a right to privacy which encompasses an affirmative liberty interest in autonomy. The article …

Strategies For Implementing And Enforcing Peace Agreements: Lessons Learned, Mark L. Schneider Jan 2006

Strategies For Implementing And Enforcing Peace Agreements: Lessons Learned, Mark L. Schneider

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

In the aftermath of the Cold War, there was a general belief that the demise of the major ideological drivers of conflict between East and West would bring about a major reduction in armed conflict. Then, all were stunned by the appearance of seemingly endless ethnic, religious and resource-driven civil conflicts in the 1990s, particularly the horrors of genocide in Rwanda, Srbrenica and Kosovo and the recurring and devastating conflicts in Central and West Africa. In this first decade of the 21st century, conflicts raged in the Congo and Northern Uganda, and massive atrocities have been documented in Darfur. We …

A Case Of Auricular Myiasis In Malaysia, M. Rohela, I. Jamaiah, L. Amir, V. Nissapatorn

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Many cases of myiasis have been reported in Malaysia. This is the second reported case of auricular myiasis caused by Chrysomya bezziana. The patient was a 41-year-old, mentally retarded, Orang Asli man. He was brought to the clinic by his mother with a complaint of pain and bleeding in his right ear for 3 days. On examination, blood and multiple maggots were seen packed in the external auditory canal of the right ear. A total of 39 live maggots were removed and maintained until they developed into 3rd instar larvae, which were later processed and identified as Chrysomya bezziana. The …
