From Scientists To Merchants: The Transformation Of The Pharmaceutical Industry And Its Impact On Health, Ugalde, Núria Homedes
Societies Without Borders
The number of innovative drugs reaching the market has decreased steadily during the last several years to a handful per year. At the same time, the amount of resources allocated by the pharmaceutical industries to promotion and marketing has increased at a faster pace than those allocated to research and development of new products. The paper presents the hypothesis that for the large corporations, the production of me-too drugs is more profitable than to invest in research and development of innovative products. Gaining a market share of me-too drugs requires large investments in promotion and marketing, one result of which …
Global Sociology And The Nature Of Rights, Turner
Global Sociology And The Nature Of Rights, Turner
Societies Without Borders
Citizenship is fundamentally a western political and legal concept; it is also a concept relevant specifically to a national polity. By contrast human rights have been, since their formal proclamation in 1948, promoted as universal rights. The relationship between the social rights of national citizenship and the human rights of the Declaration provides a useful case study in which to discover whether sociology can provide concepts and theories that function across conceptual boundaries and territorial borders. Furthermore, human rights discourse may prove to be the primary candidate for sociology to operate as an effective discourse of global social reality. However, …
Children As Victims Of Structural Violence, Kent
Children As Victims Of Structural Violence, Kent
Societies Without Borders
Structural violence is harm imposed by some people on others indirectly, through the social system, as they pursue their own preferences. Its effects are clear in the massive mortality of children. More than ten million children die before their fifth birthdays every single year. For most children, the immediate cause of death is a combination of malnutrition and ordinary diseases such as diarrhea, malaria, and measles. Given adequate resources, such diseases are readily managed. The limited allocation of resources to meeting children's needs is due more to the ways in which available resources are used than to the absolute shortage …
Human Rights And The Roles Of Social Scientists, Moncada, Judith Blau
Human Rights And The Roles Of Social Scientists, Moncada, Judith Blau
Societies Without Borders
Human rights entail an expansive conception of humans that stresses their inherent equalities, their responsibilities in democratic societies, and their rights as individuals and group members. This paper refers to the "human rights revolution," especially how it is evident in constitutions, and the relationship between human rights and public goods. Also sketched out are some of the ways that social scientists can promote human rights.
American Politics On The Edge, Aronowitz
American Politics On The Edge, Aronowitz
Societies Without Borders
Currently there are two major strategies attempting to thwart the rightward lurch of United States politics: liberals and leftists who place faith in their ability to push the Democratic party away from its current center-right orientation; and the new social movements which, disdaining electoral politics and party organization have elevated the concept of "protest and resistance" to the level of a principle and social strategy. This article argues that we desperately need a discussion about the possibility and justification for the formation of a new radical party which combines the best of the electoral and extra electoral experiences of progressive …
Martha Graham, Professor Miller And The Work For Hire Doctrine, Nancy Kim
Martha Graham, Professor Miller And The Work For Hire Doctrine, Nancy Kim
Faculty Scholarship
The current work for hire doctrine, as embodied by 17 U.S.C. Sections 101 and 201 and interpreted by the judiciary, provides a default rule of copyright ownership in favor of employers where a work is created by an employee in the scope of employment. In the absence of a written agreement, a finding that an engagement is a work for hire under the statute automatically results in all ownership being vested in the employer. This result often contradicts business norms and the understanding of one or both of the parties. In this Article, I advocate abolishing the all-or-nothing concept of …
Collaboration In Resource Sharing Among Malaysian Academic Libraries In A Digital Environment, Harvinder Kaur, Kiran Kaur, Diljit Singh
Collaboration In Resource Sharing Among Malaysian Academic Libraries In A Digital Environment, Harvinder Kaur, Kiran Kaur, Diljit Singh
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
The need for resource sharing among libraries has become even more important today with constraints of finance, space, and manpower. Traditional forms of resource sharing – inter-library loans and document delivery – are more suited to a print environment than a digital environment. The digital environment however provides many new opportunities for resource sharing, and the literature suggests many emerging models. This paper examines the views, practices, and plans of resource sharing among Malaysian academic libraries. From the interviews conducted, it was noted that librarians were aware of and support the concept of resource sharing. Current resource sharing activities in …

Mag-Igal And Igal-Jin: Dancing The Spirits Of The Ancestors Ill The Rituals Of Magduwata Of The Bajau Kubang In Bumbum Island, Semporna, East Malaysia, Mohd Anis Md Nor, Hanafi Hussin
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Mag-igal (dancing) and Igal-Jin (dancing spirit bearer) are the liminal performative components of Magduwata, a healing ritual ceremony of the Bajau Kubang people in Semporna, East Malaysia. This paper will focus on the liminality of Magduwata ceremony of the Bajau Kubang from Bumbum Islands in Semporna through trance dancing (Mag-igal and Igal-Jin) at the conclusion ofthe ancestral-derived healing ceremony. The Magduwata ritual healing represents a classic example of Turner's 'social drama' where unexplained sickness among family members is regarded as a breach in the physical and metaphysical relationship of the living and the ancestral spirits. Hence, crisis that emerges from …

The Brain-Disordered Defendant: Neuroscience And Legal Insanity In The Twenty-First Century, Richard E. Redding
American University Law Review
Brain-damaged defendants are seen everyday in American courtrooms, and in many cases, their criminal behavior appears to be the product of extremely poor judgment and self-control. Some have a disorder in the frontal lobes, the area of the brain responsible for judgment and impulse control. Yet because defendants suffering from frontal lobe dysfunction usually understand the difference between right and wrong, they are unable to avail themselves of the only insanity defense available in many states, a defense based on the narrow McNaghten test. "Irresistible impulse" (or "control") tests, on the other hand, provide an insanity defense to those who …

Regulation and maintenance of cell water volume and intracellular pH (pHi) are vital functions that are interdependent; cell volume regulation affects, and is in turn affected by, changes in pHi. Disruption of either function underlies various pathologies. To study the interaction and kinetics of these two mechanisms, we developed and validated a quantitative fluorescence imaging microscopy method to measure simultaneous changes in pHi and volume in single cells loaded with the fluorescent probe BCECF. CWV is measured at the excitation isosbestic wavelength, whereas pHiis determined ratiometrically. The method has a time resolution of …

Due to mine cross cultural living, (I was born in the U.S. but grew in Southeast Asia), I became very interested in the Anthological, Social and Scientific difference between cultures. This led to a historical meta evaluation of humanity in general. Using the principals of Noetic Science, this evaluation reviled the ignorance and down right absence of any educational opportunities to learn the true functional abilities of mankind.

Pollen Concentration Analysis Of Ancestral Pueblo Dietary Variation, Karl J. Reinhard, Sherrian Edwards, Teyona R. Damon, Debra K. Meier
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Previous coprolite research on the Colorado Plateau has shown that macrofossils are a useful way of statistically demonstrating prehistoric dietary variation of Ancestral Pueblos (Anasazi). Up until now, pollen concentration from human coprolites has not been used for comparative, statistical study. We present here the statistical analysis of pollen concentration values of coprolites from two Ancestral Pueblo sites, Salmon Ruin and Antelope House. The data show that although most pollen types do not show statistically significant variation, there are some types that show how different Ancestral Pueblo populations adapted to plant resources in different environments. The analysis indicates that future …

Wet Corn Gluten Feed And Alfalfa Hay Levels In Dry-Rolled Corn Finishing Diets: Effects On Finishing Performance And Feedlot Nitrogen Mass Balance, T. B. Farran, Galen E. Erickson, Terry Klopfenstein, C. N. Macken, R. Lindquist
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
One-hundred ninety-two crossbred steers (initial BW= 351 ± 11 kg) were used to determine the effects of removing alfalfa hay (AH) from dry-rolled corn-based diets containing wet corn gluten feed (WCGF) on animal performance and nutrient (N and OM) mass balance in open feedlot pens. Steers were stratified by weight and assigned randomly to 24 pens (2 × 3 factorial) and fed for 132 d from June to October 2002. Experimental diets contained either 0 or 35% WCGF and 0, 3.75, or 7.5% AH, and were formulated to be isonitrogenous. For efficiency of gain, an interaction occurred (P = 0.09) …

Evaluation Of Average Daily Gain Prediction By Level One Of The 1996 National Research Council Beef Model And Development Of Net Energy Adjusters, H. C. Block, Terry Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Two data sets were developed to evaluate and refine feed energy predictions with the beef National Research Council (NRC, 1996) model level 1. The first data set included pen means of group-fed cattle from 31 growing trials (201 observations) and 17 finishing trials (154 observations) representing over 7,700 animals fed outside in dirt lots. The second data set consisted of 15 studies with individually fed cattle (916 observations) fed in a barn. In each data set, actual ADG was compared with ADG predicted with the NRC model level 1, assuming thermoneutral environmental conditions. Next, the observed ADG (kg), TDN intake …
Heat Stress Risk Factors Of Feedlot Heifers, Tami M. Brown-Brandl, Roger A. Eigenberg, John Nienaber
Heat Stress Risk Factors Of Feedlot Heifers, Tami M. Brown-Brandl, Roger A. Eigenberg, John Nienaber
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Heat stress in cattle results in millions of dollars in lost revenue each year due to production losses, and in extreme cases, death. Death losses are more likely to result from animals vulnerable to heat stress. A study was conducted to determine risk factors for heat stress in feedlot heifers. Over two consecutive summers, a total of 256 feedlot heifers (32/ breed/ year) of four breeds were observed. As a measure of stress, respiration rates and panting scores were taken twice daily (morning and afternoon) on a random sample of 10 heifers/ breed. Weights, condition scores, and temperament scores were …

Effects Of Growth-Promoting Agents And Season On Blood Metabolites And Body Temperature In Heifers, Terry L. Mader, W. M. Kreikemeier
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
To assess the efficacy of growth-promoting agents among seasons, triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), plasma urea nitrogen (PUN), IGF-I, and tympanic temperature (TT) were measured in summer and winter studies. Heifers (n = 9/pen) were allotted to 12 pens in both December and June. Pens were assigned to 1 of 6 growth promotant treatments: control (no growth promotant), estrogenic implant (E), trenbolone acetate implant (TBA), E + TBA (ET), melengestrol acetate (MGA), and ET + MGA (ETM). Blood samples were collected from 4 heifers per pen per study on d 0, 28, 56, and 84 via jugular …

Predicting Carcass Composition Of Terminal Sire Sheep Using X-Ray Computed Tomography, J. M. Macfarlane, G. C. Emmans, M. J. Young, G. Simm, R. M. Lewis
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The best means to utilize X-ray computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound to predict carcass lean, fat and bone weights in vivo in terminal sire sheep were tested. Data on 160 lambs from three breeds were considered: 50 Suffolk males, 50 Suffolk females, 40 Texel males and 20 Charollais males. One-fifth of the lambs within each breed and sex group were slaughtered at each of 14, 18 and 22 weeks of age and the remaining two-fifths at 26 weeks. Carcasses were dissected into lean, fat and bone weights. Prior to slaughter all lambs were CT scanned, with cross-sectional scans taken at …
