Atmospheric Volatile Organic Compound Measurements: Distributions And Effects On Air Quality In Coastal Marine, Rural And Remote Continental Environments, Yong Zhou Jan 2006

Atmospheric Volatile Organic Compound Measurements: Distributions And Effects On Air Quality In Coastal Marine, Rural And Remote Continental Environments, Yong Zhou

Doctoral Dissertations

A detailed description of the analytical methods employed for whole air sampling and analysis of atmospheric volatile organic compounds is presented. The system described in this thesis produced high precision measurements for a large suite of nonmethane hydrocarbons, halocarbons, and alkyl nitrates, from part per billion by volume (ppbv) to part per trillion by volume (pptv) levels. The measurement precision for most gases ranged from 1-10%.

Results from two subsequent field campaigns (2002 and 2003) conducted in Yellowstone National Park (YNP) are presented. The findings indicate that 2-stroke snowmobile engine emissions furnish large quantities of air toxics to the YNP …

Ic107: Cultural Competence In Cancer Care: A Health Care Professional's Passport Pocket Guide, Intercultural Cancer Council

Informational and Promotional Materials

The Cultural Competence in Cancer Care: A Health Care Professional's Passport Pocket Guide is informational material published by the Intercultural Cancer Council in 2006. Organized using a travel metaphor with six "stops" that progressively take you on a journey of learning towards cultural competency as it relates to cancer care in the United States. The guide was designed for Health Care Professionals working with underserved populations. The guide enhanced "the existing information on cultural competency as a factor in prevention, early detection, screening, and intervention of cancer among racial/ethnic and socio-economic disadvantaged groups." An Electromyographic And Electrogoniometric Study Of Stair Climbing With And Without The Use Of The Ez-Stepª And The Quad-Stepª, Rebecca Behrens, Catherine Gregoire, Tara Mathern, Jennifer L. Pederson

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare lower extremity muscle activity along with hip and knee ROM in an elderly population on stair ascent and descent using the EZ-StepTM and Quad-StepTM in comparison to traditional stair climbing.

Subjects: Twenty nine male and female adults volunteered for this study. Inclusion criteria included those 65 years of age and older, ability to climb three flights of standard stairs, and upper extremity strength to be able to manipulate the Quad-Step TM.

Instrumentation: The EZ-StepTM and Quad-StepTM are devices that decrease stair step height by one-half. The EMG activity and ROM was …

‘The Best Thing I’Ve Ever Done Is Ring These People…’: Making A Difference Through Family Support, Elizabeth Fernandez

Journal of Family Strengths

Effective family support strategies offer early intervention and help for families and children at risk of experiencing social exclusion and maltreatment. Removal Of Refractory Tkn From An Effluent Wastewater Using Sodium Ferrate, Lucia Lettie Jan 2006

Removal Of Refractory Tkn From An Effluent Wastewater Using Sodium Ferrate, Lucia Lettie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research addresses refractory forms of nitrogen that, even with advanced biological nitrification-denitrification systems are not removed completely from domestic wastewater. TKN (Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen), ammonia plus organic nitrogen, is one of the forms to measure the levels of nitrogen present in effluent wastewaters. Ferrate, a strong oxidant, was used for the treatment of these nitrogen forms with the objective of producing nitrogen compounds that can be removed by subsequent biological processes. Bench-scale experiments were performed on effluent samples taken prior to chlorination from an Orlando, FL wastewater treatment facility, using a biological nutrient removal process. The samples were treated …

Using Focus Groups In The Consumer Research Phase Of A Social Marketing Program To Promote Moderate-Intensity Physical Activity And Walking Trail Use In Sumter County, South Carolina, Ericka L. Burroughs, Lara E. Peck, Patricia A. Sharpe, Michelle L. Granner, Carol A. Bryant, Regina Fields

Faculty Publications

Introduction: The use of social marketing approaches in public health practice is increasing. Using marketing concepts such as the "four Ps" (product, price, place, and promotion), social marketing borrows from the principles of commercial marketing but promotes beneficial health behaviors. Consumer research is used to segment the population and develop a strategy based on those marketing concepts. In a community-based participatory research study, 17 focus groups were used in consumer research to develop a social marketing program to promote walking and other moderate-intensity physical activities.

Methods: Two phases of focus groups were conducted. Phase 1 groups, which included …

The False Wisdom Of Tuition Based Ranking Of Allied Health Programs, Is Your Program Affordable?, Tamara L. Little Phelan

All Faculty Scholarship

Purpose: The purpose of this analysis was to investigate the extent to which the ranking of programs based on total tuition cost changes when housing and program length were added to total tuition. Method: To accomplish this, the cost of tuition at 13 physical therapist education programs was compiled. Programs were ranked from most expensive to least expensive. The costs associated with housing, program length, and lost opportunity to earn wages were then added to total tuition. Programs were again ranked from most expensive to least expensive. Results: Regional differences in the cost of living and the total length of …

"Sufficient" Capacity: The Contrasting Capacity Requirements For Different Documents, Mary F. Radford, Lawrence A. Frolik Jan 2006

"Sufficient" Capacity: The Contrasting Capacity Requirements For Different Documents, Mary F. Radford, Lawrence A. Frolik

Faculty Publications By Year

In Anglo-American law, the concept of mental "capacity" is used to measure the degree to which an individual has the "mental ability to understand the nature and effects of one's acts" as determined by a medical or cognitive assessment of an individual's mental ability. Based on an individual's mental capacity, the law decides whether the individual had sufficient capacity to engage in the action in question. The legal concept of mental capacity, therefore, is the basis for "when a state legitimately may take action to limit an individual's rights to make decisions about his or her own person or property." …
