Students And Refugees Together (Start): Inter-Professional Learning And Service Innovation, Avril Butler, Correia Conceicao, Kally Finch

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This paper presents four perspectives of an innovative organisation which was set up in 2001 to respond to the unmet needs of refugees and asylum seekers in the far south west of England. Social Work students were supported to undertake one of their assessed practice placements working with families referred by the Ethnic Minority Achievement Service (EMAS) teacher and the local Social Services referral co-ordinator. The organisation has grown from a small 'virtual ' organisation , staffed only by students, to a registered charity employing health and social care staff who supervise students from increasingly diverse professions to learn through …

Of Secrets And Spies: Strengthening The Public's Right To Know About The Cia, Martin E. Halstuk, Eric Easton Jan 2006

Of Secrets And Spies: Strengthening The Public's Right To Know About The Cia, Martin E. Halstuk, Eric Easton

All Faculty Scholarship

The impetus behind the Intelligence Reform Act was to prevent another terrorist attack on American soil. The statute completely overhauled the United States intelligence apparatus, largely by amending the National Security Act of 1947, which created the CIA and established the Director of Central Intelligence (DCI) as its head. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that by renovating the fifty-seven-year-old National Security Act to create a modern intelligence infrastructure, Congress has also paved the way for a new intelligence-information paradigm. For the last two decades, near-blanket CIA secrecy has gone largely unchecked, principally because of the Court's ruling …

Redevelopment And The Four Dimensions Of Class In Land Use, Audrey Mcfarlane Jan 2006

Redevelopment And The Four Dimensions Of Class In Land Use, Audrey Mcfarlane

All Faculty Scholarship

This essay begins with the proposition that the battle over the exercise of eminent domain as a question of the extent to which we accept local economic development as a proper exercise of local governmental authority. In light of the reality that economic development seeks to accomplish redevelopment to meet the social needs and consumption tastes of the affluent, the issue of local governments' autonomy to engage in redevelopment for economic development purposes is suffused with socioeconomic class struggles over land use. Therefore, the changes wrought by redevelopment challenge us to think and talk about class in ways for which …

Evidence Of Sanctity: Record-Keeping And Canonization At The Turn Of The 13th Century, Michelle Light Jan 2006

Evidence Of Sanctity: Record-Keeping And Canonization At The Turn Of The 13th Century, Michelle Light

Library Faculty Research

In 1234, the papacy asserted an exclusive right to canonize saints. To gain control over the canonization process, popes required increasingly specific written evidence from communities about their saints and developed investigative procedures to authenticate the communities’ miraculous evidence. Gathering written testimony for review in Rome was an act of domination over local processes for sanctifying community members. Not only did papal record-keeping remove decision-making from local hands, but it also enabled review of correct belief, structured community responses to the sacred, and provided an effective display of papal rights. During the process of St. Gilbert of Sempringham in 1201–1203, …
