Although deficits in visual attention are often postulated as an important component of many declines in cognitive processing and functional outcomes in older adults, surprisingly little emphasis has been placed on evaluating psychometric instruments with which individual differences in visual attention ability can be assessed. This article reports the development and beginning psychometric evaluation of DriverScan, a change detection measure of attentional search for older adults. A constrained graded response model is used to approximate response speed and accuracy with categories of immediate, delayed, or no response. DriverScan items are shown to have excellent reliability over the studied sample, and …

After almost 5 decades of authoritarian one-man rule, Fidel Castro remains firmly in power. On July 31, his brother, Raul Castro, assumed provisional presidential power after an official announcement that Fidel was ill and would undergo surgery. What would be the strategic and political implications …
Statistical Thermodynamics And Kinetics Of Dna Multiplex Hybridization Reactions, Albert S. Benight, M. T. Horne, D. J. Fish
Statistical Thermodynamics And Kinetics Of Dna Multiplex Hybridization Reactions, Albert S. Benight, M. T. Horne, D. J. Fish
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
A general analytical description of the equilibrium and reaction kinetics of DNA multiplex hybridization has been developed. In this approach, multiplex hybridization is considered to be a competitive multichannel reaction process: a system wherein many species can react both specifically and nonspecifically with one another. General equations are presented that can consider equilibrium and kinetic models of multiplex hybridization systems comprised, in principle, of any number of targets and probes. Numerical solutions to these systems for both equilibrium and kinetic behaviors are provided. Practical examples demonstrate clear differences between results obtained from more common simplex methods, in which individual hybridization …

Investigation Of The Band Structures And Optical Properties Of Super Lattices, Sheikha Ahmed Awad Alnaeme
Theses
Group III nitrides are highly attractive materials because of their great potential for the development of optoelectronic devices in short wavelength, semiconductor lasers and optical light-emitters and detectors. GaN, AlN and InN are considered as the most important compounds in this class of materials. In this work, we present a theoretical investigation of the electronic properties (band structure, density of state and contour maps of the charge density distribution) and optical properties (refractive index, absorption and dielectric constants). Also, we investigate the band structures and optical properties of AlN/GaN and InN/GaN super lattices. A full-potential linearized plane-wave (FPLAPW) method is …

This paper introduces Set-based Cascading Approach for Medical Image Segmentation (SCAMIS), a new methodology for segmentation of medical imaging by integrating a number of algorithms. Existing approaches typically adopt the pipeline methodology. Although these methods provide promising results, the results generated are still susceptible to over-segmentation and leaking. In our methodology, we describe how set operations can be utilized to better overcome these problems. To evaluate the effectiveness of this approach, Magnetic Resonance Images taken from a teaching hospital research programme have been utilised, to reflect the real world quality needed for testing in patient datasets. A comparison between the …

Rapid Isolation Of Dna From The Mucus Of Asian Arowana (Scleropages Formosus, Osteoglossidae), Nantarika Chansue
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Owing to arowana being listed in CITES, DNA diagnostics should not rely on conventional methods of obtaining tissue samples. A non-invasive method of obtaining material containing DNA has been developed. Mucus samples for DNA isolation can be obtained by cotton swabbing the arowana body surface with subsequent purification of DNA fragments by using phenol/chloroform. DNA sample quality is assessed by UV absorbancy at wave lengths of 260 nm and 280 nm, as well as by calculating the absorbancy ratio involving 260 nm/280 nm results in order to determine DNA sample quality and quantity. Electrophoresis is employed to assess DNA quantity …
