Spatial And Temporal Model Validation: Representing Landscape Properties And Processes Across Scales, C. S. Renschler Jul 2006

Spatial And Temporal Model Validation: Representing Landscape Properties And Processes Across Scales, C. S. Renschler

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Continuous modeling of landscape processes and their validation requires representingenvironmental properties for model input and output across scales. A combination of a scaling theory, aGeospatial Project Management Tool (GeoProMT), and a GIS-based environmental modeling interface, allows interdisciplinary collaborators to efficiently handle and communicate the scaling (or transformation)of geospatial information of properties and processes across scales. This integrated approach of theory, project management tool, and modeling interface can be applied to any environmental model and softwaredevelopment. The integrated modeling is based on the Geospatial Interface for the Water Erosion PredictionProject (GeoWEPP) that enables soil and water conservationists to assess soil erosion taking into …

Beyond Growth – Urban Development In Shrinking Cities As A Challenge For Modeling Approaches, S. Kabisch, A. Haase, Dagmar Haase Jul 2006

Beyond Growth – Urban Development In Shrinking Cities As A Challenge For Modeling Approaches, S. Kabisch, A. Haase, Dagmar Haase

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Urban growth has been replaced by stagnation and shrinkage processes at many places in Europe during the last decades. Demographic changes and out-migration because of lack of jobs belong to the main impact factors. Urban planners are challenged by this new and dramatic development that impacts on housing markets, the utilization of infrastructure, local labor markets and the whole viability of urban structures. Urban Research is requested to elaborate new concepts and strategies for cities loosing population, facing a big amount of vacant building stock and a large-area re-use of brown-fields. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the …

Mechanisms Underlying The Phenomenon Of Cluster Formation In The Textile/Apparel Industry In Pakistan, Khadija Bari Jul 2006

Mechanisms Underlying The Phenomenon Of Cluster Formation In The Textile/Apparel Industry In Pakistan, Khadija Bari

Business Review

The objective of this study is to analyze the ability of Pakistan’s textile industry to broaden and upgrade its competitive positions in the face of increasing international competition. It suggests a conceptual framework of organisational characteristics influencing the process and formation of clusters. Clusters are a driving force in increasing exports and magnets for attracting foreign investment. The cluster concept represents a new way of thinking about national, state, and city economies, and points to new roles for companies, governments, and other institutions striving to enhance competitiveness. The paper is based on empirical analysis of the organizational characteristics and intra-cluster …

Influence Of Foreign Media On Fashion In Young Adults In Pakistan, Arif Hasan, Shaza Bari Jul 2006

Influence Of Foreign Media On Fashion In Young Adults In Pakistan, Arif Hasan, Shaza Bari

Business Review

The extent of the influence of Indian media on fashion choices is studied by finding the underlying feelings and motives behind fashion product purchase decisions for young female adults. The results showed that the influence of Indian media on fashion choices is minimal and does not lead to an active search for a particular product. Rather, the exposure is used to make a decision when they are faced with a choice between a product seen on the media versus another product. Accessories are more easily adapted than clothes, which are too glamorized. The soap dramas are more popular among the …

The Value Of Professional Development Activities In Advancing The Careers Of Women Chief Academic Officers In Community Colleges, Brent D. Cejda Jul 2006

The Value Of Professional Development Activities In Advancing The Careers Of Women Chief Academic Officers In Community Colleges, Brent D. Cejda

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Previous research has shown that there are not distinct career lines leading to the chief academic officer (CAO) position in community colleges. Rather, it appears that a variety of skills and experiences contribute to advancement to this position. This paper examines the perceptions of women CAOs as to the importance of professional development activities to their career advancement. Responses from women community college CAOs from nine states (Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming) indicate that current position holders perceive that a number of professional development experiences were important to their advancement to the CAO position.

Sunrise… Sunset…, Alex Friedlander, Tzippora Resnick

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Sunrise and sunset are obviously a part of our everyday life. Our connection to the movement of celestial bodies, including the Sun, has been somewhat diminished by modern life, in contrast to the practical interest, fascination or even awe of earlier civilizations. Mathematics and astronomy have a long history of cooperative work, but due to their complexity and technical difficulty, usually those who participated in this endeavor were at the advanced studies level, or occupied high religious positions.

The Potential For Bus Rapid Transit To Reduce Transportation-Related Co2 Emissions, William Vincent, Lisa Callaghan Jerram Jul 2006

The Potential For Bus Rapid Transit To Reduce Transportation-Related Co2 Emissions, William Vincent, Lisa Callaghan Jerram

Journal of Public Transportation

This article examines Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) as a near-term strategy for reducing CO2 emissions in a typical medium-sized U.S. city. The paper compares the expected CO2 emissions from three scenarios to meet the city’s growth in work trips by 2011: a no-build option that relies upon private automobiles and a diesel bus fleet; building a light rail (LRT) system; and building a BRT system using 40-ft or 60-ft low emission buses. The paper calculates a CO2 emissions inventory for each scenario and finds that BRT offers the greatest potential for greenhouse gas reductions, primarily because BRT vehicles generally offer …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Objectively assessing the performance of a model and deriving model parameter values from observations are critical and challenging in landscape to regional modeling. In this paper, we applied a nonlinear inversion technique to calibrate the ecosystem model CENTURY against carbon and nitrogen stock measurements collected from 33 mature tropical forest sites in seven life zones in Costa Rica. Net primary productivity from the MODIS, C and N stocks in aboveground live biomass, litter, coarse woody debris (CWD), and in soils were used to calibrate the model. To investigate the resolution of available observations on the number of adjustable parameters, inversion …

Environmental Policy Aid Under Uncertainty, J. Myšiak, J. D. Brown Jul 2006

Environmental Policy Aid Under Uncertainty, J. Myšiak, J. D. Brown

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Uncertainty pervades all aspects of environmental policy making. Numerous typologies and techniques have been developed to conceptualise, classify, assess (qualitatively and quantitatively), propagate, control, reduce and communicate uncertainty. Such assessments are a necessary but insufficient condition for reducing uncertainty in environmental decision making. In this paper we discuss how uncertainty is translated into decisions. Since this entails numerous value judgements and trade-offs which are sensitive to how policy problems are framed, we argue that perceptions of uncertainty cannot be viewed independently of the (quality of) the policy process that it intends to inform. Thus, uncertainty management should not be limited …

Towards Better Water Governance: Putting Integrated Water Resource Management In Place, J. Myšiak, Carlo Giupponi Jul 2006

Towards Better Water Governance: Putting Integrated Water Resource Management In Place, J. Myšiak, Carlo Giupponi

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Water is a finite, renewable, yet in certain circumstances depletable, natural resource with essential value for life. The uneven distribution of water resources, amplified by numerous conflicting water uses, constrains economic development and the wellbeing of humans. The excessive quantity of water as a result of land use and/or climate change (and thus at least partly accountable to human activities) poses additional threats. To ensure an efficient allocation and protection of water, a holistic (integrated/comprehensive) management based on the principles of the ecosystem approach was endorsed by a broad scientific and policy community. Such management was aimed at promoting pro-active, …

A New Raster-Based Spatial Modelling System: 5d Environment, S. Mazzoleni, F. Giannino, M. Mulligan, D. Heathfield, M. Colandrea, M. Nicolazzo, M. D'Aquino

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The functional description of natural systems requires the representation of different classes of processes including chemical, biochemical, and physical functions, with or without their spatial representation. On the other hand, there are several cases where a realistic representation of the process dynamics needs a spatially explicit implementation of the model (eg. hydrological flows, fire propagation, pollution diffusion, etc.). In more general terms, and for different scientific fields, scaling problems and the issue of linking dynamic and spatial processes require an integrated logic and appropriate software solutions. Different tools aimed at implementing spatial modelling capability (PCRaster, SME, SimARC) have not yet …

Uncertainty Management, Spatial And Temporal Reasoning, And Validation Of Intelligent Environmental Decision Support Systems, Miquel Sànchez-Marrè, Karina Gibert, Rick Sojda, Jean-Philippe Steyer, Peter Struss, Ignasi Rodríguez-Roda

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

There are inherent open problems arising when developing and running Intelligent Environmental Decision Support Systems (IEDSS). During daily operation of IEDSS several open challenge problems appear. The uncertainty of data being processed is intrinsic to the environmental system, which is being monitored by several on-line sensors and off-line data. Thus, anomalous data values at data gathering level or even uncertain reasoning process at later levels such as in diagnosis or decision support or planning can lead the environmental process to unsafe critical operation states. At diagnosis level or even at decision support level or planning level, spatial reasoning or temporal …
