Housing And Service Options For Older Adults In Maine, Julie T. Fralich Mba, Kate Maggioncalda Sep 2006

Housing And Service Options For Older Adults In Maine, Julie T. Fralich Mba, Kate Maggioncalda

Disability & Aging

Older adults want to live at home and in their community as independently as possible for as long as possible (Bayer & Harper L, 2000). The housing and service needs of older adults vary greatly by age, by condition, by setting, by geographic region, and over time. Some older adults do not require any supportive services; others need services that may range from assistance with shopping to extensive need for nursing care. Needs also fluctuate in response to acute events (often requiring hospitalizations), or other temporary changes in health status. The challenge is to have a mix of private and …

Bridging Cultural Policy And Media Policy In The U.S.: Challenges And Opportunities, Philip M. Napoli Sep 2006

Bridging Cultural Policy And Media Policy In The U.S.: Challenges And Opportunities, Philip M. Napoli

McGannon Center Working Paper Series

Cultural policy and media policy have remained largely distinct fields of research, policy-making, and policy advocacy in the United States. As a result, there has been relatively little cross-pollination of research findings, methodological tools, or advocacy resources and expertise. There are, however, significant areas of overlap between these two fields. Unfortunately, these areas of overlap have not been fully explored, nor have the potential benefits for researchers, policy advocates, policy-makers, of identifying, building upon, and strengthening these points of overlap been considered.

This paper provides an analytical overview of the media policy and cultural policy literatures, in an effort to …

A Rough Guide To Interdisciplinarity: Graduate Student Perspectives, Jessica K. Graybill, Sarah Dooling, Vivek Shandas, John Withey, Adrienne I. Greve, Gregory L. Simon

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

A widely held belief is that only through interdisciplinarity can academics effectively address today's complex ecological problems, because these problems demand cross-disciplinary efforts and specialized knowledge from natural and social scientists. Innovative interdisciplinary research and curricula have been created to train a new generation of scientists to engage with complex issues. It seems critical that those most affected by interdisciplinary education—doctoral students—provide feedback about such innovations. Without understanding students' experiences in interdisciplinary programs, faculty will not know whether they are "getting it right" for future generations of interdisciplinarians. From our experiences as doctoral students, we provide reflections and perspectives on …

Balancing The Scales: Understanding Aboriginal Perspectives On Civil Justice, Mary Stratton

Canadian Forum on Civil Justice

As we visited each of the Civil Justice System and the Public research locations in Alberta, Nova Scotia, Ontario Quebec, Nunavut and British Columbia we contacted local Aboriginal organizations. We talked with Band Councils, Native Friendship Centres, Aboriginal legal aid programs, Native court workers, Aboriginal child welfare agencies and individuals involved in court cases. About 30 Aboriginal people took part in our key contact meetings and interviews that were transcribed and analysed to provide the first draft of this report. Some were members of a First Nation, some were Métis and others were Inuit. They lived on and off Reserves, …

The Tonle Sap: Reconsideration Of The Laws Governing Cambodia's Most Important Fishery, Ian J. Mensher Sep 2006

The Tonle Sap: Reconsideration Of The Laws Governing Cambodia's Most Important Fishery, Ian J. Mensher

Washington International Law Journal

The Tonle Sap Basin is not only Cambodia’s largest inland fishery, but also the source of food and income for roughly one million Cambodians. Its biodiversity is unrivaled within Southeast Asia, and its sustainability is vital to the socioeconomic and political stability in the region. However, Cambodia’s current fishery, forestry, and land laws do not adequately protect the Tonle Sap Basin from over-fishing and the introduction of sedimentation and pollution caused by increasing development. The laws do not create or reflect a model for sustainable fishing and development. Both the laws currently in force and proposed legislation fail to limit …

Historical Overview Of The American Land Use System: A Diagnostic Approach To Evaluating Governmental Land Use Control, John R. Nolon Sep 2006

Historical Overview Of The American Land Use System: A Diagnostic Approach To Evaluating Governmental Land Use Control, John R. Nolon

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This article describes how the American land use system has evolved to address recent environmental and economic development problems. It begins by tracing the history of the legal system used in the United States to control private sector land development and demonstrates how it achieved the flexibility needed to respond to modern challenges. The American land use system has paid a price for this flexibility: it is not a coherent whole, but rather a fragmented mosaic of legal influences. Impressive examples of cohesion are cited that suggest a strategic approach to reforming the system so that it can become an …

Bus Transit Oriented Development — Strengths And Challenges Relative To Rail, Graham Currie Sep 2006

Bus Transit Oriented Development — Strengths And Challenges Relative To Rail, Graham Currie

Journal of Public Transportation

While rail has been the focus of most planning for Transit Oriented Development (TOD), there has been recent interest in bus-related TOD with an emphasis on new bus rapid transit (BRT) systems in North and South America and Australia. This article takes a critical look at the strengths and challenges of bus-based transit systems compared to rail in relation to TOD. It includes a review of the literature and an assessment of TOD-related developments. The performance of BRT systems in relation to TOD is considered with specific reference to BRT systems in Australia. In addition, TOD related to local suburban …

Tracing Individual Public Transport Customers From An Anonymous Transaction Database, G. Tseytin, M. Hofmann, M. O'Mahony, D. Lyons

Journal of Public Transportation

Data mining concepts are used frequently throughout the transportation research sector. This article examines the concept of the market basket technique as a means of gaining more insight into public transport users’ demands. The article proposes a method that uses various data attributes of passenger records to infer the same customer in a different week (i.e., attempts to track the same customer from week to week). The general idea behind the measure is that if two records are considered similar, ideally every trip in one customer record should have a close counterpart in the other record. The research develops a …

Biologic Cycling Of Silica Across A Grassland Bioclimosequence, S. W. Blecker, Rebecca L. Mcculley, O. A. Chadwick, E. F. Kelly Sep 2006

Biologic Cycling Of Silica Across A Grassland Bioclimosequence, S. W. Blecker, Rebecca L. Mcculley, O. A. Chadwick, E. F. Kelly

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

The dynamics of biologic Si cycling in grassland ecosystems are largely unknown and likely to impact mineral weathering rates regionally and diatom productivity globally; key regulatory processes in the global Si cycle are closely tied to the global carbon cycle. Across a bioclimatic sequence spanning major grassland ecosystems in the Great Plains, soil biogenic silica depth distributions are similar to that of soil organic carbon; however, unlike soil organic carbon, quantities of soil biogenic silica decrease with increasing precipitation, despite an increase in annual biogenic inputs through litterfall across the same gradient. Though comprising only 1–3% of the total Si …

Quantitative Analysis Of Disparities In Juvenile Delinquency Referrals, André B. Rosay, Ronald S. Everett

Reports

Minority youths in Anchorage are referred to the Alaska Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) for delinquent behavior at rates much higher than white youths. This report, presenting the first findings from an extended examination of extended examination of race, ethnicity, and juvenile justice in Anchorage, provides a broad overview of the level of disproportionate minority contact in the Alaska juvenile justice system and examines whether disproportionate minority contact occurs (1) for all minority youth, (2) for both males and females, (3) for both youth referred for new crimes and youth referred for conduct or probation violations, and (4) throughout the …

The Enfleshment Of Masculinity(S): The Maintenance Of Hegemonic Masculinity, Brett N. Billman Sep 2006

The Enfleshment Of Masculinity(S): The Maintenance Of Hegemonic Masculinity, Brett N. Billman

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

With the proliferation of the term “masculinities” over the past two decades men’s subjective experiences have come to light in an attempt to destabilize the patriarchy. However, in this time it seems that hegemonic masculinity has in fact been attempting, quite successfully, to maintain itself through the proliferation of multiple patriarchies. Examination of the enfleshment of masculinity through the physicality of the masculine body presents us with a more articulated version of hegemonic masculinity. This more articulate view begins to highlight the politics of difference present in a discussion of Brokeback Mountain and the wide spread deployment and growth of …
