Environmental Equity Is Child's Play: Mapping Public Provision Of Recreation Opportunities In Urban Neighbourhoods, Jason Gilliland, Martin Holmes, Jennifer D. Irwin, Patricia Tucker
Geography & Environment Publications
This paper examines the spatial distribution of recreational opportunities for children and youth in a mid-sized Canadian city (London, Ontario), in relation to the socioeconomic status of neighbourhoods and estimated local need for publicly provided recreation spaces. Public recreation facilities (N = 537) throughout the city were identified, mapped and analysed in a geographic information system. To explore potential socio-environmental inequities, neighbourhoods (N = 22) were characterized by socioeconomic and environmental variables, an index of neighbourhood social distress, a neighbourhood play space needs index, and measures of the prevalence and density of recreational opportunities. The results of the …

BACKGROUND. The American Cancer Society, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Cancer Institute, and North American Association of Central Cancer Registries collaborate annually to provide U.S. cancer information, this year featuring the first comprehensive compilation of cancer information for U.S. Latinos.
METHODS. Cancer incidence was obtained from 90% of the Hispanic/Latino and 82% of the U.S. populations. Cancer deaths were obtained for the entire U.S. population. Cancer screening, risk factor, incidence, and mortality data were compiled for Latino and non-Latino adults and children (incidence only). Long-term (1975– 2003) and fixed-interval (1995–2003) trends and comparative analyses by disease …

Faculty Working Papers and Articles
While analyses of "North American integration" after NAFTA continue to stress outdated notions of country-to-country trade and the exchange of finished products across national borders, our paper starts from the premise that what we have now is a single, integrated regional economic system whose expansion has followed the pace and contours of business strategies emphasizing continentally-integrated supply chains, but whose management via regulatory and policy coordination has lagged dangerously behind. Most dangerous of all has been the massive gap between our region's infrastructure needs – ports, transportation, and borders – and what has been coordinated and facilitated by the public …

The following essay is excerpted from the Epilogue to The Rights of Refugees Under International Law by James C. Hathaway.© James c. Hathaway 2005 (Cambridge University Press). Reprinted with the permission of Cambridge University Press. Totaling nearly 1,200 pages and a decade in the making, The Rights of Refugees Under International Law links standards of the UN Refugee Convention to norms of international human rights law and applies this to empirical analyses of some of the world's most difficult protection challanges.
Governments in all parts of the world are withdrawing in practice from meeting the legal duty to provide refugees …
At Play On The Fields Of Honor(S), Larry Andrews
At Play On The Fields Of Honor(S), Larry Andrews
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
Who could argue with Skip Godow’s list of roles and qualities desirable in an ideal honors leader? With appropriate caveats concerning the wide variation in programs and institutional contexts, he envisions well the comprehensive demands of modern-day honors administration, demands that match my experience of over fourteen years as dean of an honors college of 1300 students as I strive imperfectly to embody the qualities he idealizes.
Of course, one might emphasize one of Skip’s points more or less. If an honors administrator is required to perform a number of non-honors university duties, the roles are even more complex. One …

Fire History At The Southwestern Great Plains Margin, Capulin Volcano National Monument, Richard P. Guyette, Michael C. Stambaugh, Rose-Marie Muzika, Erin R. Mcmurry
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
This study documents historic fire events at Capulin Volcano National Monument over the last four centuries using dendrochronologically dated fire scars at two sites: the lower volcano lava flows (the Boca) and the adjacent canyon slopes (Morrow Ranch). The mean fire interval (MFI) was 12 years at the Boca site (before 1890) and 5.4 years (1600-1750) and 19.1 years (1751-1890) at the Morrow Ranch site. Data from the Boca and Morrow Ranch sites combined with the extremely pyrogenic landscape position of the volcano slopes indicate that the volcano slopes likely burned more frequently (e.g., MFI <5 yr). Around 1750, the fire regime appeared to transition to longer fire intervals, greater temporal synchrony among fire-scarred trees, and a higher proportion of trees scarred in fire years. Temporal variability in the fire regime at Capulin Volcano may reflect changes in human populations, climate, and land use.

Book Review Of Improved Earth: Prairie Space As Modern Artefact, 1869-1944 By Rod Bantjes, Arn Keeling
Book Review Of Improved Earth: Prairie Space As Modern Artefact, 1869-1944 By Rod Bantjes, Arn Keeling
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
In this short but suggestive study, sociologist Rod Bantjes examines how contending visions of modernity shaped the social and physical landscapes of the Canadian prairies. "[B]oth statesmen and prairie farmers were infused with the modernist spirit of innovation, the will creatively (and destructively) to transform their worlds," Bantjes argues. His provocative view of farmers as agents of modernity reflects recent scholarship that seeks to explore "multiple modernities," or the notion that ideas and practices of modernism must be regarded not as monolithic but rather as contested and multivocal, and must be examined in their historical and geographical contexts.
Climate And Habitat Factors Related To A Localized Extirpation Of Gizzard Shad (Dorosoma Cepedianum), Mark T. Porath
Climate And Habitat Factors Related To A Localized Extirpation Of Gizzard Shad (Dorosoma Cepedianum), Mark T. Porath
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Gizzard shad are a riverine species commonly transplanted into man-made reservoir systems to provide prey for predatory game fish. Thermally limited, the range of their native distribution extends into the midwestern Great Plains. Following the harsh winter conditions of 2000-2001, numerous incidents of extensive gizzard shad die-offs were reported in eastern Nebraska during spring ice-out. In an effort to determine the breadth and extent of mortality, statewide fish population surveys conducted between 1994 and 2004 were examined, and it was found that gizzard shad were extirpated from seven flood-control reservoirs in a localized area of eastern Nebraska. Meteorological data confirmed …

Fire History At The Eastern Great Plains Margin, Missouri River Loess Hills, Michael C. Stambaugh, Richard P. Guyette, Erin R. Mcmurry, Daniel C. Dey
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The purpose of this paper is to provide quantitative fire history information for a geographically unique region, the Loess Hills of northwest Missouri. We sampled 33 bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa Michx.), chinkapin oak (Q. muehlenbergii Engelm.), and black oak (Q. velutina Lam.) trees from the Brickyard Hill Conservation Area in northwest Missouri. The period of tree-ring record ranged in calendar years from 1671 to 2004 and fire-scar dates (n = 97) ranged from 1672 to 1980. Fire intervals for individual trees ranged from 1 to 87 years. The mean fire interval was 6.6 years for the pre-Euro-American …

Book Review Of Laud Humphreys: Prophet Of Homosexuality And Sociology By John F. Galliher, Wayne H. Brekhus, And David P. Keys, Stephen Valocchi
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
As an undergraduate sociology major, the only thing I learned about Oklahoman Laud Humphreys's classic, Tearoom Trade (1970) was how it violated standards of informed consent in social science research. As Galliher, Brekhus, and Keys recount in their biography, Laud Humphreys: Prophet of Homosexuality and Sociology, sociology graduate student Laud Humphreys needed to supplement his (quite likely, participant) observational research of men who had sex in public bathrooms (i.e., tearooms) in St. Louis in the mid-1960s with a formal questionnaire. Knowing that these men would never agree if they knew they were selected because of their participation in highly …

Contemporary Slavery In The Amazon Of Maranhão: Reality And Response, Landen Romei
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This research project addresses the reality of contemporary slavery in the Amazon of Maranhão. Through observations at the Center of Defense of Life and Human Rights (CDVDH) in the municipality of Açailândia, it gains a sense of the combat against the usage of slave labor today. Interviews with staff members at the Center and its Cooperative explain their objectives and methods in this struggle. In addition, interviews with former slaves allow for a deeper understanding of the day-to-day life of a modern slave. Over the course of three weeks of field research, the hypothesis of the gravity of slavery and …

Lianas (woody vines) contribute substantially to the diversity and structure of most tropical forests, yet little is known about the importance of habitat specialization in maintaining tropical liana diversity and the causes of variation among forests in liana abundance and species composition. We examined habitat associations, species diversity, species composition, and community structure of lianas at Sepilok Forest Reserve, Sabah, Malaysia in northeastern Borneo among three soil types that give rise to three distinct forest types of lowland tropical rain forest: alluvial, sandstone hill, and kerangas (heath) forest. Alluvial soils are more nutrient rich and have higher soil moisture than …

Sand samples from the mouths of the Red and Mekong Rivers were analyzed to determine the provenance and exhumation history of their source regions. U-Pb dating of detrital zircon grains shows that the main sources comprise crust formed within the Yangtze Craton and during the Triassic Indosinian Orogeny. Indosinian grains in the Mekong are younger (210-240 Ma) than those in the Red River (230-290 Ma), suggesting preferential erosion of the Qiangtang Block of Tibet into the Mekong. The Red River has a higher proportion of 700-800 Ma grains originally derived from the Yangtze Craton. 40Ar/ 39Ar dating of muscovite grains …
